GP-100 on it's way.

I put a 3 inch GP100 in layaway Saturday night. I checked out 2 smiths and and went with GP. Looked at a 686 with a 2.5 inch barrel. And they had a titanium framed Smith too very light, at least that is what the salesmen told me it was. It wasn't the Night Guard model.

Anyway the GP trigger was really nice. Side by with the 686 I noticed a slight stack right before the hammer dropped and maybe a pound heavier in trigger pull weight (if that). Fit and finish seemed about equal. I am sure the Smith is a bit more polished. But not enough to justify the extra $200.

Happy with my choice hope to get it soon. Mean time I can start looking for a good holster and speed loaders :)

You've made an excellent choice. Lots of folks look down on Rugers, particularly as compared to S&W, but the fact is that Ruger makes their stuff accurate, super-tough, and affordable. Also, the DA pull on your GP only gets better with use. One word of warning: Careful...they tend to multiply.;)

If you like the old-fashioned rubber grips with the wood inserts -- I bought some for my new 3 inch GP100 a few weeks back at Brownells on-line. Very nice and inexpensive. I actually bought 2 sets -- the full size and the short grip (for easier concealment). Brownells did not have the inserts for the short grip, but Altamont grips did (the short grip insert for the GP100 is the same size as the SP101 insert). I like them both -- I keep changing them out trying to decide which is cooler!

It's a GOOD gun

They're great, got mine in 6", nic-named it "the Lazer" ;) It really is that accurate  Much fun to come for you my friend, congrats and take care.

So for .38s 158 grain seems to be the weight that fixed sight guns are regulated for. Is that true for .357 too? Or is it 125 grain?

I pretty much only shoot 158 grains over 5 grains of Unique in my 3" GP.

Congrats on your new GP100. They are great revolvers. The 158gr 357 magnum will be your most accurate in most cases. I have found 125gr tend to be print about 1 1/2 to 2 inch low.
Good luck,
Howard

Whirlwind: Dan-O's photo shows the "short" grip with wood insert, while NVBigEd's photo shows the full size -- both are really cool.

If you're referring to my OP, yes I think you are correct. 386 was the really light weight 6 shot .357

Not to prove you wrong or right, but I always the thought 3 prefix as aluminum, and 5 or 6 as steel.

A little education for the common folk. LOL

The 6 is aluminum, at least in some cases such as the 642.

My 342 is aluminum with a titanium cylinder. I think the 3 indicates lighter weight, sometimes scandium, but the 6 doesn't necessarily mean steel.

I just picked up a new gp100 last friday in 4", the only thing I don't like is it says "read manual" on the barrel. Its not a big deal just think it would look better not there.

Roundeye: Yeah, Ruger owners sit at the breakfast table and read their guns. I guess it's part of their charm. Goodness knows I own a bunch of them.
