Goundhogs can climb trees !!!

we do a ton of groundhog hunting here in my part of ohio...more for the excuse to be out shooting at something than anything else..never seen one climb a tree but have seen them swim...as for eating them, we were taught that you have to be very poor and very hungry...not one or the other but both! I should add that we do all this hunting on our deer lease which is also a working farm. We usually dont hunt what we will not eat but shoot any and all groundhogs we see as a service to the land owner. groundhog holes can be big trouble for farm equiptment and horses. In an average year we will eliminate 40-50 hogs on the 120 acre farm...did not want to offend anybody

Uncle Bernie had dairy farm, central Ohio,

went down to educate the local population. He hand me a M70, .225Win., go get them.
Bill & I traipsed out the hill side, glassing, crested a gully and looked at base here was a red fox strolling nicely, until he spotted us, then disappeared.

Sat still and glassed to see if he come out? Notice a tree stump, to left of where the fox last seen and realized is was hairy???
Glassed some more and figured out it was a woodchuck, sunning, took a sitting position placed the crosshair along his back, vertical behind the ear, took the shot and watched the chuck, fly from the top, hit the ground and leave a dust cloud for three feet to his hole. the shot was a downhill shot and hit the stump.
Educated that one!

They climb my apple trees and get the apples to the extent the limbs will support their weight. My dog has ran several up a tree. Also, I was in a tree stand a couple of years ago and saw one take off up a tree about 50 yards away and then a little buck came in to view. I guess the buck startled it.

Seen it

Seen it several times. Pushed by dogs sometimes, other times just sunning on a limb. (a low limb) .

darn coyotes have eaten most of the ground hogs around here now.

Never seen it, never heard it. Learn something new every day! Just the other weekend I got the opportunity to deliver an eviction notice ( via carbon express ) to the one that took up residence under my shed 42yds zipped em right behind the shoulder.

Never seen it, never heard it.
When I first posted this, I was going to write; Can Groundhogs climb trees ???
I realized this would not be accurate as I actually saw this one up there and did not think anyone helped him get there. Since that posting, I have related this story to my hunting buddies and they had not heard of or seen any climb trees. The were however, nice enough not to question my senility or that I had been smoking something. What really stikes me strange, is that once they get up there, they just don't want to move and obviously feel pretty safe. .... :)

Be Safe !!!

You just don't think of a groundhog in a tree, I mean whenever you see them they're either on the ground or going in or coming out of a hole in the "ground". Pretty crazy if you ask me. If I ever saw one up a tree I would be  what the...

My wife & I are going marmot (Western Groundhog) hunting tomorrow. Three large dens worth of shooting on the property. I'd really like to see one up a tree while I'm there. Not too likely after the first shot rings out, but I'll give them a chance to get there if they want. The goal for tomorrow is 12 or more. I'll have pics if any want to see them.

i havent had a groundhog in over 12 years..

then 3 days ago i noticed a mound of dirt by my palms....filled it up then again the next morning......

i flooded the whole (first time ever i cant find where it goes/comes from) and the hole kept taking the water for the entire half hour i pumped...

It is now my mission to get this little son of a.......gun

I was bowhunting years ago, and heard something scratching around behind me. I turned around and there was a groundhog climbing up a tree. It was a sort of low hanging, spreading out flat type of tree and it looked like he was going to lay down in the sun to me.
