Google - The anti-gun search engine

I had the same thing happen with my site when I submitted it to Google Adsense: declined due to inappropriate content.

Bear in mind that I don't sell anything--guns or accessories--on my site. I feature brands of guns, and have advertising for gun shops (the whole purpose of the site, actually).

I've seen Google ads for Guns and Ammo magazine, as well as a number of manufacturers such as Kimber. And, of course, there's always the ebay and amazon.com ads no matter what phrase you're searching for.

There are other services similar to Google Adsense and Adwords, and that's where I'm going.

Microsoft's new MSN search is giving better search results than Google, and they don't appear to be biased against guns.

Looked all through adwords information and couldn't actually find their standards.

But apparently they don't allow adwords for sex sites, either, because if you put in "sex" nothing comes up in adwords either.

At least they allow normal searches for guns and information without restriction.

Ticks me off, though ... might as well not allow trampolines or sporting goods. Do you know how many kids are hurt every year in soccer accidents? We need a soccerballcontrol.org group to put pressure on communities to close soccer clubs down!

Actually, you would be surprised what they actually endorse for their "standards". I received a response from them today and then did a little research on sites they allow to advertise in AdWords. It almost made me sick :barf: Litterally, I want to take a shower now. Here is the firey response I sent back to them. I have deleted the cuss word which I used to search, but you get the idea.

Robyn-

I thank you for you response, however, I have been researching your Adword site to determine just what boundaries you consider to be "inappropriate content". Here are my findings. Obviously the term "F*CK" is not considered inappropriate. Neither is "KIDDIE PORN". Both of these searches resulted in AdWord sites soliciting unedited sexual photos, movies, and the like. May I remind you "Kiddie Porn" is federally banned in the Unites States of America. How can this be "appropriate content"?

Let us cover some other words which bring up AdWord Sponsored advertising. "Young Sex" and "Teen Sex" also produce an uncountable number of AdWord Sponsor sites. The most shocking for me was "RAPE PORN" or "RAPED PORN" which solicits pictures of actual VIOLENT RAPES!!!! WHAT THE HELL??? How can this be consider "appropriate content"? These are sponsored sites by GOOGLE. I can now only assume GOOGLE endorses these practice simply by the actions taken against me and the firearms industry. By banning me for "inappropriate content" because I sell firearms and ammunition, you have legally defined the rest of your published AdWords as "appropriate".

You make me sick.

I am posting this one every website I can find and I look forward to your response.

Kelsey, thanks (I think) for the search keywords. I was floored. The type of Google ads that came up are the kind I have to delete every day from my email account.

How nice to know that Google regards your site and mine as below the level of child pornographers.

google: guns=evil

Don'tchu know about googles "do no evil" corporate moto?

Google is a business. The revenue the company generates is derived from offering its search technology to companies and from the sale of advertising displayed on Google and on other sites across the web. However, you may have never seen an ad on Google. That's because Google does not allow ads to be displayed on our results pages unless they're relevant to the results page on which they're shown. So, only certain searches produce sponsored links above or to the right of the results. Google firmly believes that ads can provide useful information if, and only if, they are relevant to what you wish to find.

your response will look like this:

Hello Jesse,

Thank you for your inquiry. The Google advertising program is managed by a
set of policies which we develop based on several factors, including user
and customer experience and legal considerations. We review our policies
regularly and make changes to keep them current and effective. Our goal is
to have policies that are fair, consistent, and adaptable.

Thank you for your interest in this issue and sharing your thoughts with
us. Your feedback is important and helpful to us as we work to keep our
policies effective and fair.

Sincerely,

The Google AdWords Team

(except yours wont says jesse, unless thats your name.)

Great, so everyone hates Google. Anyone else know a comparable search engine that works as well?

I am often impressed by the tenacity that gun owners approach various issues, and then impressed by how well they violate their own claims, such as those that are on AOL and shop at all sorts of those anti-gun places like Wal-Mart. Hell, some of y'all even claim some gun companies are anti-gun!

I don't advertise Google, but use it as a free search engine and it is one of the best out there. So does someone have a good replacement that is fully pro gun without question?

DNS-
Good point. I'll be honest. I haven't stopped using the engine. I just don't support it by continuing to advertise.

Poor compromise for a staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment.

Did I say, "Good Point"?

Well, here is what I tried to send, pending revision to fit under the 1000 character limit:

It has come to my attention that google's advertising policy discriminates against advertising legal firearms due to "innapropriate content" while touting its belief in uncensored freedom of expression. Aside from all other factors, this comes across as at least minimally hypocritical. On another note, I challenge your definitions of what is considered "innapropriate content." While sites that offer firearms and ammunition are censored, and told that their accounts will be suspended as long as they reference firearms,
searches for porn, a__l, b__j_b and d__bl_ p___tra___n return numerous sponsored links. I assume that this means google supports pornography, as these sites are apparently appropriate. Again along these lines, I searched for papers, term papers, and essays, and numerous sponsored links turned up advertising "custom" papers with discreet service and delivery "in as early as 6 hours." This can only lead me to reason that google supports academic dishonesty as this is not deemed "innapropriate content." I use google often and am truly saddened to find that your service, which I consider a valuable tool, censors legal sales of firearms and ammunition, while passing much more questionable content on. I can only ask that this unbalanced method of website approval be remedied as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Adam Zimmerman

I will revise this to make it fit, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a mailing address I can submit an expanded version of this to.
Might as well send it more than one way.

1000 characters exactly. I look foreward to a reply.

Excellent message, perception. :)

You deserve better than the canned response you'll get.

I sent one just with just the same comparison. I used the seaches of Rape Porn and Kiddie Porn. Both resulted in AdWord sites.

but you forgot

I bet that you wasted you time with two searches... google may also sponsor kiddie rape porn. I use google mostly bc my browser (firefox) is set to use google/firefox as the homepage and I have been using it forever. I think they could change their minds lets all hope so.

Jesse

i just googled handguns and came up with numerous sites that are pretty intense with some crazy people on there.. someone probably complained about your site.
