Goodbye to an Old Friend

Monday, after work, I had to pick up an old friend and take him
to the hospital. The old guy was blind, had lost some teeth , had
difficulty walking and could no longer digest his food properly.
I carried him from my car into the hospital and laid him on the
stainless steel examination table. The doctor administered the
shot and it was all over in only seconds. I did not realize it would
be this difficult. I thought I had prepared myself for this, I hadn't.

i lost my little pal on Feb 3rd this year

i still look for him
He was fine at new years and gone a month later.Prolly cancer, but i could not afford to have all the tests run on him to find out what was killing him. So i gave him anti biotics and kept him happy at home. His last meal was Pheasant soup. He passed on the day i had him scheduled for that last vet trip. He was a big part of our lives for 8 years. i had hoped to have him for at least 5 more.

Give yer little buddies a hug tonight

they deserve it

Condolences, DG...they add so much quality to this short and wonderful thing we call life. Remember him fondly.

Sorry for your loss. We lost a Boxer to cancer a few years back. He was only 5. Anyway, the family had him put to sleep while I was away at school, and I'll be damned if they didn't neglect to tell me. Next weekend I came home, came in the house and started calling for him to see how he was doing. I didn't see him so I asked where he was. I got strange looks, as they knew what had been done but apparently didn't recollect that I was never informed. What a low point it can be to lose a pet.

My first reply was lost in the mess of deleted posts. I wanted to send condolences on your loss. I was in the same position with my Springer last year, after many miles and birds together.
Never an easy thing, and takes time to get over it.
Here's one to Pal and Cooper.

Sorry for your loss DG. We had to put our 16 year old cat down last August. He was diabetic, hyperthyroid, and had a tumor blocking his colon. It was his time, but we still miss him a lot, and you're right, it's really tough. It was the right thing, the humane thing to do, but it's tough. He visits in dreams, though. Pets add a lot. Please accept our sympathies.
Best regards, M&M2

My heart goes out ot you Door Gunner. I lost one of my wolves last year and the outpouring of sympathy here on TFL demomnstrated just how much the members here care for one another and are in fact true friends.

Sorry to hear that...

I had to put down my 14 year old Brittany this summer because of kidney failure.. Poor guy was losing weight, but got to see one more 4th of July, which made him happy (always went crazy at the smell of gunpowder)

Found a rott puppy that was abandoned during the winter and took him in. Not a replacement, but it made the house a little more complete.

Me too. The worst part is when you see something move in the backyard and get up to let the dog in, or see a shadow in the next room and assume it's her for a second.

So sorry, GunR.
Someone who has never known the joy of a four-legged friend will never understand they are family too.

Suddenly-
You were gone
From all the lives
You left your mark upon
...
We ran by the water
On the wet summer lawn
-I see the footprints
I remember-

-I feel the way you would
-I feel the way you would

Tried to believe
But you know it's no good
This is something
That just can't be understood
...
I learned your love for life
I feel the way that you would
-I feel your presence
I remember-
...

"Some say the only place you can bury a dog is in your heart. That way you can call the
dog in for a little chat now and then-
teasing it about being a clumsy puppy and looking down at your hunting boots remember-
ing who it was that put the teeth marks in
them.
You can hunt a day or so again, together, when you need a certain kind of memory-
another day you like better than the one you're living right now."

Gene Hill, 1989

I have a wall of photos in my studio of
my "Pals". Not a day goes by that I don't
think of them with fondness. They love and
accept us without judgement; unconditionally.
We could all learn a great lesson from them.
