Good state for hog hunting...

tachunter

Feral hogs are one of the greatest ecological and agricultural disasters facing our country. Those states that have them are trying desperately to get rid of them. But they breed like bunnies - a sow averages something like 17 or 18 piglets a year.

The destroy crops, crop land, native wildlife habitat and spread disease.

Not sure about him personally, but there is a HUGE problem with the boar hunts in Michigan. A real concern about the damage thats going to occur to the states ag industry as a result of the growing number of feral swine - many assumed to be escapees of these hunting outfits.

There are several states that are good for huntin' hogs, but there is ONE state that I can tell You for SURE is BAD to hunt hogs in...Hungry!

You didn't say where in IL but from my house in NE Texas I can do St. Louis in about 10 hours and that's an hour and a half to get out of Texas. I duck hunted a 16K acre lease along the Red River last weekend just west of Texarkana. We didn't see any hogs but we weren't really looking for them. We did see where they had been. EVERYWHERE. Some pastures were just about impassable in the Yamaha RHINO from the rooting they had done. We did cross HOG Expressway. Literally every tree had mud rubbed on it a couple of feet up or more on a path about two feet wide.

I think your best bet would be to try and find some kind of guide to put you on the hogs. One fellow I talked to on the lease who did some hog hunting said that he has figured out a bit of a cycle they seem to be running right now. He said that if he sees hogs in an area, he will see them there again in about 6 days.

From what I've learned about it around here you could bust your ass tracking and moving, 24/7, seeing all kinds of sign and never see a hog to shoot at.

Catfish, a year ago the USAF moved me out of SW OK and now living in IL stationed at Scott.

If you are looking for OK WMAs with hogs, I can tell you Waurika and Ft Cobb both have them. Guys I worked with were very successful hunting in there and offered to take me, but it never worked out. Supposedly, there were hogs in the Altus/Lugert WMA, but for the couple times I went up there, I never saw them. Rumors abounded about Game & Fish helos with sharpshooters thinning them up there, but I couldn't confirm it.

There is a growing problem with hogs in OK, especially in the SW area with the peanut growers. The amazing part is despite how bad the farmers claimed they hurt, offers to come out and thin the herds went on deaf ears mostly. After trying 15 farmers in the area, I gave up. Then had a great gent offer me his farm on the Salt Fork of the Red. The hogs were there, but moved around a lot. We'd get them heavy for a week, then they'd disappear, then come back a couple weeks later, etc.

If you are a DoD ID card holder, another option is Ft Sill in Lawton. Each Spring they host a 2-month special hog hunt limited to shotgun, muzzleloader, or bow. My now 13yo daughter cut her teeth hiking up/down the hills in the ranges there. If you have base access, talk to me and I can highlight better places to look.

Being a native Floridian, Florida is where I grew up hunting hogs. All of the central FL WMAs had them that I went on. Brent's got the skinny on the LA portion of FL and I'd trust his word on hoggin up there. Not sure if the drive to the panhandle would get you within your 10 hour limit, though, and central FL would definitely be out.

Tachunter- I also have hunted Tejon Ranch. I took a nice 175 pound sow. I think my favorite area is the Central California coastal hills...Did you shoot ground squirrels while you were there?

counter, hearing that makes sense and is more understandable most definitely. The video with the music and all just seemed to have a different purpose behind it.

White, never hunt squirrels on tejon. I hunt the the central southern coastal hills on a private ranch. Before I started hunting them my father hunted the ranch for years. Every time he would go he would come across at least 50 hogs. He never used the rifle, always a bow. There are many squirrels there as well.
