good price on S&W 686

I found a 686-2 about 6 months ago for 300.00. It was my first revolver. Very nice gun. Have since picked up a 29-8 mountain gun to keep it company. I think I'm addicted!!!

This is one of those hobbies where you become easily addicted, and are dying to get Friday's paycheck for a downpayment on your 'next'. That was my life in the Corps ;)

I bought a NIB Smith & Wesson 6" barrel 686-5 for $439.95 back in April of
2001; today the same gun (a six-shot model) runs from $499.88 (4") to
$519.95 for the 8-3/8" model. You got a heck'eva good deal, if you walked
for only $315. :) :D Enjoy~

Hmmm...I had no idea that 686's had appreciated in value so much. I bought my 6" NIB for $299...in 1991 or '92. It's still mint, only about 300 rounds fired through it. Anacondas also surprised me, I bought one of those new in early '95 for $399; now, I guess they're going for around $800.

Still, I'd bet that if I tried to sell them, I'd be hard pressed to find someone who would even give me what I paid for them. With my luck at selling stuff, people would ask me to throw in a box of ammo if I were giving them away for free.

The times they are a changin....
I remember when I bought my first .357 it was a 686.
I paid like $350 bucks for it.
It had a chromed hammer and trigger, no ugly frame 'bolster' and no hole in the frame for a key lock and best of all ,a one peice barrell.
Over a decade later it still is as tight and straight shooting as the day I bought it.

Great gun...Don't forget, if it is an early one, look to see if the letter M (modification) is near the serial number.. The letter will look different. There is a recall, no charge from S&W, to replace hammer nose & bushing...The turn-around time was about 2 weeks. No problems and I love shooting it...If your not sure about your model, call them and they will tell you if it needs the modification.

Boy I would love to get deals like you folks, NIB 686-6 for $429 thats dealer cost these days. I cant seem to find any dealers selling for cost. Our club FFL who is not a S&W dealer gets them for $450 from a wholesaler (includes shipping ) and sells them for $475. Local shops sell them for $550.

Used in good condition they go for $389-450 depending on the version.
