Good Deed Costs Me Over $500 (Well, Kind Of)

Ya done good man. Sleep well knowing your honesty is rare and upstanding.
What the seller does for the guy he bought it from isn't your concern.
I hope he throws a few bucks to the guy but, the original seller should have done some research on the gun before selling it to the LGS.

I'm sure he didn't. He purchased it in good faith thinking it was a Model 10 and had it marked as such, and at $350 (what he paid) he would have paid too much in my opinion as I bought a Model 10 in nicer condition this year for $228.

All I know is that I couldn't have purchased the gun for the $495 after he trusted me to give him my opinion. People may think poorly of me for any number of reasons but it will never be because I take advantage of others after I gain their trust.

My point was, that the shop owner is about to make a large profit thanks to you. He asked you to look at something he knew nothing about. You advised him and appraised the gun and appreciated his profit by 450% or more. If he has half the integrity that you have, he should be paying you for your services.....thus the "box of ammo or something".

Your statement tho,
If I had been at another shop and was looking and they never asked me for my opinion on anything like that I would have bought it in an instant.
shows there is a friendship there, as your integrity only goes as far as this shop. Kinda what friends do.

-CENSORED-as your integrity only goes as far as this shop.

I'm glad you feel comfortable questioning my integrity. I think I'll leave it at that and move on before I say something I shouldn't.

Go ahead, say something. It was your statement that claimed you would have taken the gun and ran if it was any other shop. Not mine. So you didn't rip off a friend, big deal. I don't consider that a good deed, as I said before, just what friends do.

You did the right thing. That matters.

A few years back, a guy came into the shop with his "dad's old .45" in a sock. He needed a "hiking gun" and wanted to see if the .45 was worth anything.

The gun was an old 1911. As soon as it turned over in his hand, I saw the "swoosh" logo and "Swissvale" on the slide. It was a Union Switch & Signal.

For a second, that little devil on my shoulder said, "offer $800!" It happens.

Thing is, I just stared at it with a dumbfounded expression for several seconds. What are the odds, right? He asked if something was wrong with the gun.

Wrong? No. The only thing wrong is that it's been wrapped up in a sock for decades. I explained what he actually had, and he was tickled.

So, could he carry it in the woods? GAH! NO! It was in great shape, so I oiled it up and instructed him to run a couple magazines of hardball through it every now and then.
