Good days at the Range!

I've had many good days at the local range, but my latest one on June 13, was pretty nice.

My re-barreled Rem 700, 243 hadn't shot as well as hoped, but I decided to try some Nosler 80 grain Varmint bullets and they grouped 0.4" at 100 yards, even with some shifty winds.

The Tikka T3, .243 Lite didn't like that load as well, but shot 0.7".

The Tikka 595, .223 continued to impress me, shooting Accurate 2230, 25 grain load, 50 Grain Hornady SP SX; making a nice 0.3" group.

Then, it was off to the handgun range. Time was getting tight, but I managed to shoot three handguns, .22LR Bersa, steel model; a Stainless Ruger MKII with Bushnell mini red dot, and a Colt Gold Cup 70 series, .45. Shooting two-handed, I managed to keep most rounds within the scoring rings of a 50-foot NRA target, despite shooting high with a light target load in the .45. The factory hardball rounds were mostly in the 3" black.

The Ruger MK II shoots lights-out with that red dot. I think all the shots were in the black.

Not having shot the handguns for a while, it was great to do as well. All in all, a good range day.

Have you had a good range day lately???

I shoot in the National Forest. There is an impromptu range about 1 1/2 hours away. Best day in recent memory I took a new, to me, SVT 40 on out and shot at stumps and what not at ranges out to about 400 yards. The sights were well regulated, and the beast was hitting where it was pointed. I realize accuracy these days is measured in fractions of minutes of angle, and I doubt that this rifle would be considered accurate by today's standards. But it sure was a lot of fun connecting with stumps and whatnot on the hillside.

Air temperature was pleasant, was unhurried, very relaxing. Some days are like that!. :)

--Was a time when I thrived on competition shooting. Today? I much more enjoy plinking and just being outside shooting tired old iron from days gone by. There are no expectations, and no disappointments, so long as the rifle fires, and I come home in one piece.

Sounds like a great day at the range.

My last outing was not my best day, but any day at the range beats a day at work!

yesterday was just a good day all around. I took my M1 garand out for the first time and did it at my first CMP match even. took home 3rd place though to be fair there were not a whole lot of shooters yesterday. I'm still not complaining.

The best day

I had a great day, at the gravel pit.

I had been looking for several months for a wood stocked 30-06 rifle as a wedding gift for my new son-in-law. I finally found a Ruger M77 standard that was mfg. in 1977. I was in excellent condition for a 36 year old rifle. The bore look good and the stock showed some wear, but was nice walnut. It came with a old Leupold 3X9 scope.

We went out to the gravel to zero. First at 25 yards then out to 120 yards. There was a moderate cross wind.

Since the pit we used was walk in, he had to shoot from a prone position using my old ALICE pack as a rest.

25 yard we got a 1" group 1/2" below center.

I moved the target out to 120 yards.

He proceeded to fire a 1 1/2" 3 shot group at that distance lying prone in the dirt. Sweet!

I was very pleased. The rifle exceeded my expectation and he was all smiles. My son-in-law is a recently discharged Afghan' war vet that was badly wounded by a Taliban grenade. He still has shrapnel in his face, shoulder, and arm. I wanted him to do well for many reasons.

He did great, and he loves the rifle. This fall we hunt.

Great day!
