Good CCW

Nobody likes the XD line up? I think for the money and reputation it is a great CCW. I don't think I have ever heard anyone complain about it. Just my thoughts.

I would look at the Glock G36 or if you want steel the Dan Wesson Bobtail. There is a big weight difference.

I just went to the CZ websight and they have a new 1911 that looks real nice for CC if price is not a factor, it's called the CCO and only weighs 1.7 pounds.

Carry what you like! I carry a 4506-1 all the time and never leave it at home. I don't and won't leave home without it. I carry in all four seasons. I don't even notice it, especially as far as weight goes. I like a full sized gun for controllability and it presents an even bigger psychological effect when pointed at someone. I like the SA/DA function too!

Your gonna have to go to a store or range and rent / fonddle everything that catches your eye. If its your first time carrying you should probably take a class other than the state mandated ones. Drawing and shooting is not easy and takes some practice. Of course, if you have already done all this or have alot of experince, disregard the latter portion of my post and refer to the former.

Good luck.

Wow! You da man!

I was issued the S&W 4566 TSW and I had my own S&W 1006. Both were like boat anchors. That was the late 1990s, I think.

Today, I carry either my G21 SF or my new G30 SF. They are much lighter and easier to carry than the all steel S&W guns.

My .45 carry pistol is an H&K USPc. Love it. But, to be perfectly honest, I find it a bit bulky for concealed carry.
Same here, so I replaced it with a Kimber Ultra CDP and never looked back. It rides in a Don Hume JIT slide on my strong side hip and is so comfortable it's practically there always. The HK is still available to carry the same way, along with a Glock 26 or 29 depending on purpose.

imo

I have two kahrs that are my concealed carry pistols....I gave a link below my thoughts for each gun.

PM45.............As far as concealed carry goes............probably none better for comfort and none smaller. Please note the dimensions and size and compare to other guns. It is a handful because of the short barrel. But if you take the time to shoot and break it in
......man, it is a great CCW for .45.

My other main squeeze is kahr MK40 all stainless. I carry this more than all of my other guns put together. The best shooting small handgun I've ever owned. LCP/s keltecs CZs I've shot and owned alot em, but none IMO compare to this MK40. Granted this gun is heavier and bigger, but still very small compared to say a glock 26. (Yuck I dont even like saying that G-word) I just like having that .45!!!! Wish Kahr made an MK45 ............mmmmmmmmmm aaaah aaaah aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh

Obviously my favorite gun is an H&K full size USP. (.45) but it is just to bulky for ccw. And with that said I give you my top 2 rules for purchasing a CCW gun......and most here will probably agree.

This gun is on your side for one thing protect your life so first and foremost...

**********RULE #1 Hit at least 8 out of 10 rounds from 25 yards on a 1ft by 1ft target.
(In other words, how well do you shoot this gun?)

**********RULE #2 How well can I conceal this pistol.
(This comes down to many aspects of CCW. How your dress. Is the gun you shoot popular enough to get accessories that are comfortable. This is very important " COMFORTABLE" !!!!!!!!!!!! You can't underestimate that because what good is that gun if you leave it in your truck or at home because it isnt "COMFORTABLE". Does the gun dissappear when holstered. There are tons of things that you will learn over time by experience that no one here can tell or teach you about simply because of your taste and comfort levels.

One last thing before I go...You don't need a big caliber gun to protect yourself. It's proven!!!! Size will not compensate for poor shooting. Many special forces still carry .9mm throught out our military. If you can't hit the target,...............find a different gun you can hit it even if its a .22. If it means your life I'd rather hit them than scare em!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't mean to toot my own horn but i am a pretty experienced pistol shooter i just want a .45 or 10mm for the simple fact that i know heavy clothing isn't going to hinder the bullet plus i already load it for my old man And even a glancing hit is still going to catch their attention.

No caliber bullet is going to be hindered (how ever you spell it) by normal clothing inside 75 yards! I don't call that experienced.

Big Ben: I just ordered a 40cal Springfield EMP as mine.

I own an EMP and love the gun so far. I have about 400 rounds through it. With that being said the concealability (if that is a word) is no where close to that of a PM45. EMP is a .9mm.

I'm a little old school, so please forgive my prejudice. There ain't any reason in the world to take a pansy a$$ plastic pistol over a quality 1911. The 1911 is the platform of choice for big ol' bullets that do what they're supposed to do. Goofy triggers of mush on pistols that point like blocks of wood may be in vogue, but they ain't got anything over a 1911 to make them worthwhile. A step backwards in my book.

Sorry. You couldn't give me a 1911 for CCW. Range guns, maybe, but I've had two of them. Never again.

I can appreciate your selecting a caliber, but I think there are other things to consider before you get to caliber.

The platform you select needs to be one that accomplishes what you want, is comfortable, and above all can be effectively concealed (ie hidden so that no one will know you have it) on your person in how you dress. For me, I require a few pistols to accomplish all that. Each one fills a niche... my life/work just doesn't lend itself to a big pistol and a photographers vest/fanny pack all the time.

lol

I haven't figured out how to quote so this is my version

Stone Cold "I'm a little old school, so please forgive my prejudice. There ain't any reason in the world to take a pansy a$$ plastic pistol over a quality 1911. Tell me again why military, police, fbi, cia, and any other form agency doesn't issue 1911 and issue mostly "plastic" pistols. I own 1911s but it is NOT a CCW plain and simple. I think you are in the wrong thread.

Because everybody makes a mistake now and then. I know of several cops that carry 1911s as their departments let them carry anything they can qualify with. Do you know for a fact there are no 1911s in the military? And as far as 1911s NOT a CCW plain and simple? It's certainly mine, and I own plenty of "plastic" pistols. My Kimber UCDP is a far better carry piece than my HKUSPC, though that HK was purchased expressly for carry. I prefer it by a wide margin over my Glocks as well, and I guarantee you I'm not alone in this.

a friend of mine just got his ccw licencse(sp??) and he bought a kimber 1911 and he says its a good pistol to use for carrying and most of the time i don't ever see it so in my opinion its a good firearm, i have also shot a couple of different kimber 1911's and i love the way they shoot

Go back and reread my last posts. I never said officers don't carry 1911s I said they don't get issued. I affectionatly love 1911s love the way they shoot. They are of the most accurate handguns available no matter who its made by! But they are not CCW, go seach buds gun shop or ables or just google concealed carry weapons.

I don't consider HK compacts a CCW.

Sorry for Hijacking your thread hammer. I do believe though that with him just getting his ccw permit that he will have a different opinion as time goes on. Even the alum. frames just heavy. I started by carrying a HK usp polymer gun. Just to much gun to conceal for me. Maybe that could be your next survey to see how people feel about carrying full size 1911s. I would recommend you try to borrow one from a friend and where it a couple days.

Anybody who thinks that a 1911 ain't a CCW pistol because of its size is either a skinny Somolian or ain't seen enough 1911s. I shoot IDPA with a bunch of guys who mostly carry tuperware. I ain't impressed. There's a reason I have to shoot in a different class. Ol' Jeff Cooper once said that a handgun should never be fair. And yeah, the military went away from a 1911 for the unclean masses, but special ops guys who have a choice will take a 1911 over an Italian pea shooter any day. Range gun my arse.
