Used a .35 Remington for many years on black bear with good success.

I second the .444 for black bear. Most of that hunting will be from a tree stand and not great long shots with all of the underbrush and trees in that area. The .444 is a great combination of enough brawn to do the job without over kill.

I live in IN and hunting with a center fire (rifle cartridge) is not allowed, but I have taken more than a few Deer and a couple of Black Bear (small) with my Winchester .30-30 in other states. There are better rounds out there, but so far, my .30-30 has done all I've asked of it. I have no reason to think that it wouldn't do for your puposes as well.
