Good All-Around Handgun

While the Glock 19 is the std, I wonder if the XD Mod 2 might be a better choice. It is slimmed down a bit, has the great XD trigger, LCI and CI.

I have the Sig 320, I do like it.

The 320 compact is close in size to the Glock 19, the full size is about the size of the 17.

If you get the full size, you can spend $35 and buy a compact frame for it. The full size slide fits on the compact frame and looks good. You would have smaller grip to aid in concealment but the longer slide and sight radius of the full size.

Pretty much anything that can be said of the Mod. 2, can be said of the XD subcompact.

Wow, thanks for all the input guys. I think this is going to be down to a test firing at the range. The one i go to seems to have most of my options. I was also lucky enough to have the fellow next to me allow me to fire a few from his P226.

I have been looking at the P320, but i assumed it cost more than it did, I think it has to be in the running now.

If i really want to splurge, id like to buy a Sphinx SDP Compact.

From the comments, if i were to buy one right now without checking them out at the range, the XDm or the Glock would probably win. The glock fit my hands well, and the XDm, has all the features i like. I think between those two, it will come down to price.

If you like the looks and operational features of the Sphinx SDP you should check out the excellent and affordable CZ P-07. I think I paid $460 for mine. Glock 19 size. Utterly reliable. Accurate. Great factory DA/SA trigger (with options to upgrade through Cajun Gun Works) and the ability to switch that trigger to a SAO cocked and locked configuration if you decide to.

Works very well with the Alien Gear Holster you mentioned too.

If you are thinking this, definitely try out the CZ P-07 since its almost the same gun, just a little less nice and a lot less pricey.

From you list I like the Sig and S&W. You mention that you like the SA/DA of the Sig 2022. I prefer SA/DA to striker myself but, own a couple of strikers that I like too.

You mention the Sphinx SDP. I'll be posting about mine shortly that I just picked up yesterday. They are nice but cost around $350.00 or so more than the models that are on your list.

Other DA/SA models that would be worth a look if you have not already and are open to other models would be. Beretta PX4, CZ P-07, and FN FNX. Used you can find HK and Sigs at pretty good prices.

Striker models would be the HK VP-9, FN FNS, Sig 320, Steyr M9-A1, and Walther PPQ.

The Walther P-99 AS is a good middle ground model that's striker fired but, also a SA/DA.

For DOA the Sig 250 and Walther PPX are pretty good as well.

Sounds like you want to stay with models that are in the 4' barrel range. That size works well for duty, CC, HD/night stand, and range work.

While I love my CZs... They are not for everyone. The shorter slide gives some people trouble.

On a somewhat related note... I was fondling my pistols last night as I am want to do on occasion... And feeling the actions and slide motion.

Most of my pistols have a little clunkiness in the slide motion, in the lock and unlock portion of slide movement. Nothing alarming or vulgar in how they felt, just a little clunky.

Not so with my P226 scorpion... It felt smooth and even the whole time. But I would expect that since it cost over twice what the others cost, that I should find it a bit "nicer" in some way.

I do like the fact I can own many types of pistols. So OP, while you may start out with an all purpose pistol, you will soon find yourself in possession of a wider selection over time.

That CZ P-07 is nice! I like it. I am going to have to take a deeper look at this. However, if my LGS doesnt have it, i think i will need to pass.

Welcome to TFL, inFAM1S!
Glock 19 or 19c (saw a great deal on the 19cs at my LGS)
M&P9c (fits well in my hand)
Sig SP2022 (love the DA/SA, the style, and the brand)
XDm 3.8 Compact (Love the full size mag option)
All of the pistols that you have listed (as well as many of the others brought up by other TFL members) are in what I think of as the "sweet spot" in terms of size. They're large enough to shoot well, and small enough to carry comfortably.

They're all from reliable manufacturers, and I think any of them will serve you well. So get thee to a gun range with rentals, and try out a few of them. We can sit and spout numbers all day long, but only you can tell how a model feels in your hand.

As for me, I was in the same spot a couple of years ago and wound up with a G19. With the exception of one minor hiccup at about 400 rounds, she's been great. Easy to carry, shoot and maintain. Quite likely more accurate than I am. Within the "acceptable window" on capacity and caliber. Some folks hate how Glocks feel in the hand, and they're not for everyone. I like mine, though.

Thanks all, I appreciate so much input. I think the input has been great, as of right now for me I am going to have to go see how they feel at the range.
