Good All-Around Handgun

Hi,
I am new here and was looking for input as to a good all around handgun. I have determined some options, and I am set on 9mm. This will be my IWB EDC and OWB carry for my kit (during training and such) and would like lots of holster options. ( I have always wanted an AlienGear IWB and Kydex OWB and SafariLand OWB. I was initially looking at full and compact sizes, but believe compact should be my first purchase, just based on EDC and being more familiar with it than a "range" gun.

My selections are as follows;
Glock 19 or 19c (saw a great deal on the 19cs at my LGS)
M&P9c (fits well in my hand)
Sig SP2022 (love the DA/SA, the style, and the brand)
XDm 3.8 Compact (Love the full size mag option)

I did own an XD .45 Service model (which was awesome), and a Rock River 1911.

Any input to sway me one way or the other would be helpful, the only one i have shot out of the bunch was the glock 19, and it was pretty damn awesome.

I think you have already picked what I consider the best all-around pistol. Hard to beat the G19 IMO. Good size, good capacity, as accurate as you will need for the intended purpose...

I would say that in all probability the Glock 19 is the perfect "all around" type of hand gun. Good size for EDC, large enough for solid range use, 15 round mags (with the 17 and 33 round mags optional as well).

If you like the "grip angle" and triggers of Glocks would be your consideration, and it sounds like you like them just fine. Hard to beat IMO.

If you do get the Gen 3, I prefer TalonGrips (rubber for me) and the Vickers Tangodown mag release to really make the Gen 3 feel good. Gen 4 is GTG in my opinion.

Another one to maybe consider if you're interested in SA/DA is the CZ P-07. Same size as the Glock 19, mostly (just a bit heavier and wider) with a great trigger.

Thanks guys!
That was one of the things I was drawn about on the G19, It was light, but so light it felt like a toy. I didnt really like the no safety except the trigger scenario on the glock. Not that i want a thumb safety or anything, but it seemed a bit dodgy. But they have me sold on the polygonal rifling of the barrel

The M&P had a great grip angle and I understand there is no need to pull the trigger to disassemble, the likewise true for the XDm. I have heard stories of the barrels on M&Ps flaking off and shooting pieces of barrel down range (not sure of the validity, but does make a concern from someone looking to purchase one)

The SP2022 felt awesome, and was better priced, and has the backing of Sig. However, the mags i am told are a pain to find and/or expensive, a quick google search produced a number between 25 and 50 per mag.

Like the XD i used to have i love the loaded chamber indicator on the XD, and the striker indicator as well. Mags are readily available, and the trigger is no worse (IMO) than a factory glock.

I think i need a side by side.

Maybe i will go spend the day at the range and rent all of them.

I appreciate all the input guys, wish i could just go pick them all up.

I know there are sales running on the discontinued compensated guns but compensation doesn't get you much with a 9 mm gun and it can be annoying.

You can't use them in some competitions - so I'd fork over the few extra bucks for a non comp. model.

Yeah... no comp for me either.

Yes the 19 is a good all purpose gun.

The M&P is just a little taller and about the same length as the 19. The original XD is in there as well in size, but a little heavier than the others.

I disliked the trigger on the 2022... it feels like the trigger does not break until it is practically in my palm. Some may not find it an issue. I say shoot it or dry fire it at least, many times, as I did not notice the problem right away.

If you get an XDm, then the 3.8 would fit for your overallness better, but I still think the original XD's size is better.

IMO:

It doesn't get any better than Glock for a value packed 9mm.

There are lots of contenders and they all have fans, but none approach the simplicity of Glock's design.

Nothing else on the market is as simple to operate, maintain or modify to suit your individual taste, and the aftermarket support is tremendous which makes all those things easier.

I've never been a Glock fan even though I know they run well and have a reputation for eating anything, so of the choices you listed, I'd probably vote:

1. Sig 2022
2. S&W M&P9c (very close second)
3. Springfield

If you want a few others to consider you might want to look at (in a range of price points):
Sig 229
Sig 239
Sig 320
H&K USP9c
Ruger SR9c
H&K VP9
H&K P30
CZ 75 compact.

These all also have excellent reputations.

Not really any major advantage in a CCW/HD pistol, so still the XD.
But the Glock, or any on your list for that matter would be a bad choice. Just seem that the features you mention all lead to the XD.
Now, if you have a range you can go to that rents guns, give them all a test drive before you decide. Then, if all are still in contention, you might want to decide based on price if that is an issue.

To me what never failed yet, cheap things cost the most. First happy that "didn't pay much" turns out to be a pain in the you-know-where. Than I trow it away, and get a good one. But than I just wasted the price of the cheapo.
What is a gun price savings compared to the many hundreds of $$$ spent on ammo, and other things that go with it?
Most of the time we get what we pay for. If low price is what makes you happy, fine with me.

I think any of the choices listed by the OP are reliable, and well made guns. Not really something in the low end line.

My selections are as follows;

M&P9c (fits well in my hand)
Sig SP2022 (love the DA/SA, the style, and the brand)

Last month, I bought 2 mags for my SP2022 for $22.95 via Cabelas, during a sale. I've also seen non-sale prices at around $32. Shop around.

Yeah, that comment was really out of place in this thread.

Quality generally increases with cost when you're looking at large price increments, but it's most definitely not a neat, linear relationship on amounts as small as the differences in price between recognized manufacturers' mass-produced service pistols.

Grip length is more important than slide length when it comes to concealment, but plenty of people carry large framed pistols.

It comes down to many factors, and its all up to the individual.

These factors are why the Glock 19 is given as a default answer to the questions you pose. Its smaller grip aids in concealment, but is large enough to provide a full grip for most people.

Glocks are not without their faults and issues, mostly centered around the relationship between the pistol and shooter... Ergos, trigger feel, etc.

There are many pistols in the same size range as the 19, so its easier to find a pistol you like of a similar size.

There have been a lot of good suggestions in this thread for alternatives to look into as well.

You might want to give the G26 a good look too...
It too can run the larger capacity magzines like the G19/17/34
Its a bit shorter than the G19 and its muzzle is rounded.. doesnt dig into my hip as bad.
Its grip is shorter, easier to conceal.
It gives up a few rounds but its also lighter
If you want your pinky finger to have a resting place get a Pearce magazine extension for 10 bucks.

Sounds like whatever you get will see a lot of carry time, I recommend picking one that'll be easy to live with. And your in luck with the G26... many of us think it shoots just as well or better than the 19 or 17.

Of the choices listed, I would choose either a Glock 19 or the XDm 3.8 9mm. I am not much of a Glock fan, but the Glock 19 is a great gun. Like others have said, it is a jack-of-all-trades. You get 15 round magazine capacity. It is small enough to conceal, yet much more controllable than a sub compact. The grip seems to fit most people's hand well.
The same can be said for the XDm 3.8 9mm, but with better ergonomics and a better trigger. Both will tend to be 100% reliable. Glock has much better aftermarket support as far as parts and holsters are concerned.

Of the ones you listed, I'd pick the glock 19. Have you looked into the Sig p320? That's probably going to be my next pistol, but I love the idea of modularity in firearms.
