Good .22 Revolver Options (new or used)

For SA I like the single six.

for DA the Taurus 94 works well, the DA pull smooths up allot after a good bit of firing.

I have a Charter Pathfinder that I'm happy with. It's mostly used to introduce new shooters. The trigger smoothes out quite a bit with use, and a little paint on the front sight helps.

Of course a used Smith or Ruger would be wonderful, and I looked around for one. But finding a seller that doesn't think they're worth their weight in gold can be difficult.

I have a Higgins I've been looking to part with to fund my next project. I had it on this forum about a year ago, but no takers at that time.
It has a nice double action trigger, looks great, shoots great. Just a few very minor nicks in the finish. Anyone looking for a plinker would be VERY happy with it.
I would let it go for $250. If interested, just shoot me a PM.

Like Post #22

I bought a 5" Pathfinder a couple of months ago just to have a DA 22 revolver and like it just fine. Now while I like my Ruger Single 10 and Single 6 Combo better so far the CA has worked just fine. Do like my S6 5.5" barrel the best of the lot, most accurate.

S&W 17 can be found for less than $500.00. I sold a 17-4 in nice condition for $475.00 after two days at a gun show with no interest. When we moved last year most of my guns were sold and I kept a nice Hi Standard but sold it later when it proved too sensitive to ammo. Now have a Ruger Single Six that shoots every thing (have a lot of 22 ammo on hand). If you want a gun that shoot all 22 ammo, then get a revolver. :D

For 300 as a price cap your going to be hard pressed to find something with better quality/ reliability as the Ruger single six, plus they come with 22mag cylinder head...I've been down the same road with the economy DA revolvers, in the end I went back to the single six and saved my money for my amazing K22 masterpiece

After losing a loved and much used Ruger Single-Six in a recent home invasion, my son bought a new model Ruger Single-Six Convertible. The trigger pull was superb right out of the box, and accuracy with Federal Bulk .22 LR HP's was on the order of 1.5" at 25 yds from a rest. Barrel length is 4-5/8" makes it a great woods loafing carry gun. I'd suggest that a Single Six might fulfill your needs if you can swing the price. Our previous one was purchased new in 1972 and gave great service.

Got my (new) Ruger SP-101 .22 for $469 and a used (excellent condition but no box/papers) S&W M17-3 for $375. Surprisingly have a Single Six Hunter on order for 550 and that was the most expensive

Given those prices perhaps you might be able to find a used Sp-101 or M17 for around your price range (as others have suggested)?

To be fair this was last year (for the ones I already have) but have the prices of used revolvers gone up that much?

I'd recommend either of those models wholeheartedly.

Well, I purchased a "like new" used Charter Arms Pathfinder 4" for $305. Not the worlds' most amazing deal, but $60 off what a new one would run at the "average" price.

I figure I'll give this one a go. If it works well, I figure I've gotten a pretty good deal on a good shooters for not much $$. If not, I'll get rid of it and pick up a used Smith 18 (which I may do anyway as I have a soft spot for old pinned S&W wheelguns).

Thanks all!

Honestly, a Single Six for under $300 is a damn good find. I looked for one for years (literally) and on the uncommon occasion one popped up for that price it was inevitably two hours away and spoken for within 48 hours.

If you find a DA for under $300, it's probably going to be garbage. If you find one, more power to you. Best case scenario I could figure was a hypothetical used Taurus 94 but I never did find one.

Went with a new Single Six for about $400 and I love the thing.

Don't give up on finding a Model 17 around your price range, you will have to look, but they are out there. I picked up this 4 screw for $425 from the used rack at my LGS about 7 months ago. My only advice is be prepared to act fast, because if you don't buy it the guy in line behind you will.

The good thing about buying used is that if you don't like the gun you can always sell it for little or no loss. I suspect you'll enjoy the Charter, but sure wouldn't blame you for trading up to a Smith.

Hope it works out for you. Lots of people look for a "good" double action 22 revolver under $300 and eventually end up buying something they're not entirely satisfied with and later buy the S&W M17 or the harder to find M18.

My favorites are the M18 and the 4" Colt Diamondback. But that is not helping you any. Keep your eyes open for a M17/M18 or Colt Trooper Mark III or older Trooper. Very good guns in 22LR.

Added: Another one that pops up every now and then are S&W M63's. The new ones exceed your budget, but I have seen the old 4" at around $400.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm always on the lookout for nice older Smiths (especially in 4") anyway; good to get a little more familiar with the .22 models.
