Good .22 Bolt-Gun

My CZ 452FS is a tack driver. I spent less than $20 for an aftermarket trigger kit and have a trigger that breaks like an icicle. A thin one. The wood on mine is pretty good; if you are lucky you can end up with some really nice walnut.

I added a ten round magazine but it looks a little funny with the longer magazine sticking out.

Every time I take it to the range it draws an admiring crowd.

Where I live in GA, I hunt on public lands much of the time. We are required have an unloaded rifle within 50yds of a road open for travel.

Dr Strangelove, I live in Athens Ga as well and am confused by this statement. Can you direct me to the statute or law concerning this statement. I know it is illegal to discharge a firearm within 50 yds of a publicly maintained road but, I haven't heard anything about traveling with an loaded rifle. I do it all the time so would like to know if I am not within the law.

probably should not stick my nose into this, near as I can tell it isn't, if it is loaded it must be in open view

I love tube fed. 22's
I have a few. 22 rifles and the ones I shoot the most are the tube fed. Marlin 39A, Winchester 9422 and my old Winchester 72 which is a bolt action.
If I was in the market for another bolt action that Marlin XT-22TSR would be at the top of my list!
Marlins are hard to beat when accuracy and price are considered, in my experience they shoot right with the most expensive rifles, maybe better accuracy wise.

Hounddawg, that is the way I read it as well. I hope that is correct, since I've been doing it for years.
Sorry to get off topic, I have no problem with tubular mags, some people believe that they are more prone to get dented or damaged, causing feeding problems than one with a drop box mag or internal box magazine. I do own one that has survived pretty well over 25 years of rough treatment but, it is a semi auto Winchestrer model 190, not a bolt gun (not that it matters for purposes of this discussion).

Read rule #2 in particular if you hunt public land

Take a look at the Marlin Mod 25 also known as the Glenfield. They are discntinued. They are bolt action with a seven shot magazine. You should be able to find one for around $150.00. They are very accurate and well worth the money. They will shoot shorts and longs, etc. You might have to scrub the barrel out to restore accuracy from the lead build up. I highly recommend them.

I'll chuck out another suggestion: look at the Remington 51x model .22 bolt actions. Depending upon the specific model, they came in single shot or repeater bolt action. They are very accurate, and a joy to shoot.

I agree... I have a Remington 512 that I got at a pawn shop for about a hundred bucks that is just a blast. It's a tubular magazine rifle, and shoots short, long, and long rifle cartridges. It's a full sized rifle, very sleek, and has a real walnut stock.
It was something of a "beater", I suppose.. the rear sight had been removed (and lost), and the lower side of the butt stock needs to be refinished... which I'll do this winter. The bore is shiny clean, and it shoots like a dream. I found a rear sight for it online, and will probably keep it for the duration. NICE rifle.

I have a tube-fed Marlin 60, and it's been a great little gun. The big mag is nice sometimes... other times it doesn't matter. FWIW, I have a 5 round mag in my CZ 452 Ultralux, and I enjoy shooting that rifle more than the Marlin most of the time. I choose the CZ for accuracy and the Marlin for volume. :-)

This and my earlier post applied to public lands, if you aren't hunting WMA's, or traveling through one, it may not apply to you. I hunt almost exclusively public land, and it pays to read up on the regs, some of them don't make sense and can really surprise you.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't realize you were speaking about traveling with a loaded firearm while on public lands. I have never hunted public land in Georgia (and I have a Ga. Weapons carry license).

Did you get your rifle yet?

I agree with both the Savage and the CZ. I have the Savage Mark II and I love it. I really wanted the CZ but it was a little too spendy for me. Only because I wanted to scope the .22 I got and with the Savage and a cheap scope I could stay within my budget.

My Dad has an old pump tube fed Winchester (I think Winchester) it has run for 20+ with him and us three boys using it. I had to take it to the Smith because we couldn't get the action to move. He gave it a good cleaning and it's back in service. I don't think my Dad ever cleaned it before that.

My whole point with that is that the pump is a lot of fun too. He can cycle it faster then I can my Savage. And, he can get almost as accurate as my Savage with him using iron sights. My excuse is that he has 20+ years more practice then me.

I made my decision:

I wanted a rifle now, so I settled on the Stainless Savage MKII. I like it. But do not fret! I also decided to purchase the Marlin if I ever did find one! And I promised myself to get me a purty CZ 455 sooner or later.

That way they all have a few friends.

I really like the Savage, I will probably put a Leupold scope on it before too long.

I'm unfamiliar with the marlin, but I have a tube fed and a mag fed .22. I think you will be more annoyed with tube fed then pleased with it, seems gimmicky on a bolt action. Multiple mags are much quicker to reload and less fiddly. Personally I have a Bruno mod 2, so thats another vote for the CZ.

If you just want something "different" (a perfectly valid reason) yeh you may well like the Marlin, but the rifle with most practical value will be the magazine fed.

I tried to stop thus post after realising your last comment but bugger it its staying now. Have fun with your new rifles, buying them all is always the best option :D

Congratulations!!! Savage Mark II is fun to shoot!! I'm replacing the scope that came with my Matk II with the Nikon Prostaff 3X9X40 in camo! Nikons are good scopes and very reasonably priced!!! I tried the Bushnell Elite but I'm going back to Nikon's.. Also I hear nothing but good thins about the Leupold... Good Luck!!

I have a few .22's. I have some pretty good shooters, including some that were under $150, used.

My old Mossberg 46B's have a tube that will hold 20 LR shells...I don't mind that capacity a bit.;) $150-ish, adjustable triggers, peep sights, and they shoot well, as does my mag fed $125 146T, and the 341. For my money, old Mossbergs are the best of the inexpensive.

My Remington 581 is a tube feeder, that will shoot pretty good as well. I stole it for $110 at the pawn shop, with a Bushnell Scopechief scope.

But for the best accuracy, you might need to spend some money...the $250 used BRNO 451 I have will shoot with my $350+ CZ, and is mag fed as well. They take the nice under 1/2 inch 25 yard every now and then groups of the other guns, and make them 1/4 inch almost every time groups, even with bulk ammo.

Seriously....there are REALLY decent cheaper guns out there...but the CZ is simply worth the extra bit of money, if you want ultimate accuracy fior under $800. They are FAR better than any gun that costs less, and probably 90% as good as any gun that costs twice as much.

I've got to throw in some change about the tube vs box debate. For plinking around at the range, I find a tube to be a lot friendlier. I don't have soft hands but halfway through a brick of 22s my thumbs get sore if I'm loading a tiny little box magazine every 5 or 10 shots. Round for round, it's faster to load a tube magazine unless you have enough box mags to last your entire trip to the range.

I find a tube magazine plenty safe to load, you really don't have to go anywhere near the muzzle if you do it right. Regarding the purchase, if you want a Marlin, poke around for an older one. It's a shame that they sold out to Remington. The new rifles just haven't been the same. I have an old 918T in 22 mag that will put a hole through a dime at 100yds if I do my part. It's still good enough at 200 to bounce a tin can.

The only bolt action .22 I have, and have ever had, is the one I got from my dad in the mid 60's. He had it for years before that. It is a Winchester Model 72. It's dead-on accurate to this day. If you could find one of these I'm sure you'd like it.

If you have a tube-mag rifle, and want to reload faster...as fast as a box mag, you need a Spee-D-Loader.
With practice, you can usually outrun the average 1022 user trying to deal with their clunky mag changes ;)

Put rifle on safe...
Whip out the mag tube...
put the Spee-D up against the hole...
let gravity do its thing...
replace tube...
point downrange...
hit the LSHO lever to load the first bullet (or rack the slide/bolt to load)...
Aim & switch the safety to FIRE..and fire away!!

Some guy made a crack about my Marlin 99-G before an Appleseed...he saw the error of old-fashioned thinking...
he now owns a Marlin 60SS fitted with Tech-Sights & a Spee-D-Loader!!
You live, You learn :D
Speed comes with practice, and the sureness of consistancy.
