good 1911

Buy a Colt, you won't regret it and should you decide to modify or build on it later you won't find a better base gun. I have a number of custom Colts but the last new one I bought was a Commander a little over a year ago. I was impressed with the fit and finish as well as the trigger. With the prices that new Colt's are going for these days (I got the Commander from PSA on sale for $599!!!) you'll have a hard time finding better gun for the money and few guns hold their value like a Colt.

A friend of mine just bought a Kahr/Auto Ordnance pakerized milspec 1911. He has put about 600 rounds through it and has not had a single problem with it.

in that price range I would buy any one of several models from Colt.
Other good choices would be the Ruger Sr1911, and Springfields.

WC145 That's a great looking, Commander...what kind of accuracy are you getting. I especially like the Parkerizing, non-glare finish...all business that!

Best Regards, Rod

Thanks. That gun is actually blued, the pic isn't very good, I had just taken it out of the packaging and wiped off the oil, plus the lighting wasn't very good.

To be honest, I haven't shot it yet. It spent the last year in a long, difficult, and convoluted journey getting customized but I finally got it back a couple of weeks ago. It's going to be a gift for my son to commemorate earning his way into special operations. I'll deliver it to him down at Ft Benning in a month or two, I'll put some rounds through it before then just to be sure it shoots. The work was done by a local 'smith and the Colt Custom Shop. His little brother chose the grips for it.

Well, you had better look online at Gunbroker.com...the used Ruger SR1911's seem to be going for more than the new price of the Colt Commander posted here.
(I got the Commander from PSA on sale for $599!!!)

Like I said, I got the Commander on sale. The same gun is currently running $750-$850 on gunbroker, $717 at Bud's, and they will hold they're value. I'd take a new Colt for the same money or less over any Ruger all day long.

Rock Island are nice budget pistols. Sometimes they require a trip to the mothership but their smiths know what's up and get them running very good. My lgs has a new ms gi in 45 acp, spur hammer, wood grips, gi sights $439

WC145, great job on the Colt...and an even better on the gift for your son. It's a marker in his life that he'll never forget. And thank him for his service for all of us here at TFL. He's one of the "few"...a hero.

I did something similar for our #1 son when he graduated from college, bound for a Navy assignment in submarines. I had a flintlock rifle built for him, then made all the accoutrements: powder horns, skinning and patch knives, rifle case from the hide off the first deer he killed, possibles bag etc. He's 43 now, and it's the treasure of his shooting life...

Our #2 son is/was a Marine and wanted something that would help him in the Corps...we settled on a Beretta 92FS, reworked and then made up the leather gear that went with it. Shoulder holster with a 3-mag case on the off side etc. It did some good...he's a hellofa pistol shot.

Someone I believe, just mentioned the Auto ordnance mil spec bare bones 1911. I bought mine in 2011 and put about 2,000 rounds through it without a single hiccup..Id stake my life in it anytime..That, and my colt mark IV commander. both are the bast bang for the buck.

Thanks! Good on all of you for serving, I'll bet your boys were thrilled with their gifts. Few things mean as much as a gun that's given to a son by his father, it's like handing down the torch and can set the tone for the rest of their lives.

You and your boys, stay safe.
