As a kid, guns were shot for a reason. Either sighting them in getting ready for hunting season, or while being used for hunting. Shooting at targets for fun and recreation was something one did with a shotgun at the trap range. If you wanted to shoot 22 at a target for fun, you waited till the carnival was in town. Thus a brick of .22 lasted for years, even if you hunted every week. A box of 20 rounds for you deer rifle lasted for several years. Add to the fact that all ammo was readily available from most local hardware stores and gas stations, there was no reason to ever have more than a box or two around. We had no reason to think back then, that this situation would ever change. We didn't stockpile ammo for TEOTWAWKI, we stockpiled water and surplus C-Rations, and practiced cowering beneath our school desks because the Russians were gonna nuke us.
