Going a little crazy: Long barrel or short barrel revolver?? Please help.

Get a 4" (ideal) or shorter barrel.

The modern long 6"+ revolvers are not meant for defense work, but rather are hunting or target shooting guns. Long barrels for police/defense work went out decades ago, and for very good reason.

They are easily taken from the shooter or pushed away, like you mentioned. A 4" barreled gun has the best balance of ballistics, accuracy, and retainability. Shorter barrels are even better for retainability and concealability, but do give up some practical accuracy and ballistics.

What's your rush? Every time you buy a new toy...it's a peak in the fun meter. Take your time and buy them all. If you're going ADD, got a wife that can classify for a second every month? You can extract the maximum fun out of this one way or another.

Get the 6" now. The idea that you're supposed to have a snub nose for home defense because somebody is going to grab a longer barrel seems unrealistic. Don't get that close.

Don't worry about getting a short barreled revolver until you actually have a CCW. By then the one a month restriction will be long gone.

My first home defense geared revolver was a 6" Colt Python. It was the only gun I kept loaded inside my home for years. If I had that part of my life to re-live during the same time period, I would choose the 4" Python and then as money permitted buy a 6" Python.

I purchased the 6" Python to carry hunting and for woods walks where I wanted a larger caliber than 22. My usual woods carry gun at that time was a 4" Colt Diamondback 22. Loved that revolver! What I learned was that I didn't like to carry the 6" Python for long periods of time in a belt holster.

It is all mute now as I sold the Python and purchased another Diamondback (and a 22 Colt Trooper + a little money) with the proceeds at the time.

I was never really that impressed with the 357 mag caliber (loud, recoil than I needed, and not quite big enough for deer hunting). But as years passed and I started to carry a 38 spl revolver a lot. I purchased a few 357's again to satiate myself (6" Colt Trooper Mark III, 3" Ruger GP-100, and 6" SW M19). Of those, I shoot the Colt Trooper MIII the most and keep the GP-100 as my home defense handgun. The Smith remains unfired.
