Glove Compartment Carry?

UCA 76-10-504 states that a person may carry a concealed hangun in his vehicle or, with permission of the operator, in another person's vehicle. It can be carried anywhere in the vehicle including on your person. No CFP (permit) required.

In SC, You cannot keep a loaded weapon in the glove box without a CWP. I usually have one in my truck, but take it out at night, due to the current economy. Several of my friends have had their guns stolen out of their trucks sitting right in their driveway in the last few weeks. TAKE THAT PUPPY IN WITH YOU AT NIGHT!

Hedge, check again. In SC you can carry a loaded weapon in a glove compartment. My son just got checked on this the other day. I had mine in the glove box unloaded, son informed the officer of the weapon and officer ask why he would carry an unloaded weapon. The officer suggested if he was going to have a weapon in the car, load it.

Law states in a closed container, that includes a brown paper bag.

Now NC is a different animal. On the seat visible.

This is probably an obvious question that has been answered before but I dont like how this site complicates the use of a search function.
#1-Search is actually easy to use.
#2-Why is it members DO NOT include the state they live in when asking questions like this?
Here is the question: What is the legality of of carrying a handgun in the glove box of a car? Do you need a CCW Permit? Does it have to be cased? It is a good idea?

Once you have thoroughly checked out your state law governing glove compartment storage of your handgun, don't leave a $1500 1911 unattended
in your vehicle, especially overnight, unless you have good insurance. Thieves always check the glove box and center console looking for a handgun or whatever other goodies you may have.

I carry 24/7 but keep and old j frame ( more expendable) in the glove box in case I have a senior moment and forget to take my carry gun with me when leaving the house.

I live in Minnesota and will be getting my carry permit in acouple weeks. Here is my question. I drive a company vehicle that has no rules about firearms. That being said is it legal for me to store my gun in the glovebox both when I am in and out of the vehicle even though it is not my vehicle. I ask this both ways because I do go into many buildings where it is posted no firearms allowed.

Thanks
Pete

It should be, but you likely have to have the companies permission... Check your state code on it. Call a law office....

Pete, Minnesota law does not specifically address concealing a weapon in a vehicle if you have a CCW. I would say that common sense says that it should be OK, but the law and common sense don't necessarily mesh these days.

Your best bet would be to write a letter to the Minnesota Attorney General and ask for an opinion, then, if the AG says it's OK, keep that letter with the gun.

Thanks for the input. I think we all can agree that common sense and the "govenment" 'sould not be used in the same book let alone sentence.::D:D

It is legal in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to have a loaded handgun in ones glove compartment without a specific concealed weapons permit. ONLY in your glove compartment. Console or door pocket will get you in a heap of dog $hit! That is an awesome previlage for residents of Kentucky. :)

In MN you can leave your loaded gun in the glove box whether you own the vehicle or not as long as you are the driver. Also note that parking lots are exempt in MN, so even though the building may be posted they can't legally post the parking lot.

Go to http://www.handgunlaw.us/ and "RV/Car Carry" in the top left to download a copy of a guide that covers your question for all states. If a state is not listed it means you must have a CCW in that state to have the handgun in a accessible location. In those states you can have one but you have to secure it according to the Federal laws covering interstate transportation of handguns. This means unloaded and secured in locked container where the driver doesn't have immediate access e.g. the trunk.

If you click the "User CP" link on this page you can edit your TFL details and add the state so it will show in your public information. That way when you ask questions about anything to do with firearms laws people will know where you are located so they can provide meaningful responses.

It's legal to carry your pistol in your glove box in Georgia, permit or no permit. Same also applies for open carry on your seat or person while driving. Recently, the law was expanded to also include carry in your center console (armrest).

Like the guys said, it depends on the laws in your given state.

A lot of people don't understand that all fifty states have different laws.
For example in West Virginia, there is no such thing as Rape. Its called Sexual Assault here.

In Kentucky you can carry a gun in your glovebox and its a-ok whether you have a permit or not.

In West Virginia its against the law UNLESS you have a permit. Even though WV is just across the river from Kentucky and are almost identical states in just about every way imaginable.
