Glove box guns..

I'm also in Florida and faced a similar problem. However, since I must be older than most of you guys, the problem sort of soved itself. Gone is the Mustang, hello Mercury Grand Marquis!
I have several 1911s and 2,500 rounds of ammo in the glove box (next to the wife's Puffs). In the trunk I've got a 90mm pack howitzer, 80 mm mortar, a quad 50 AA gun and a platoon of Force Recon Marines and the coolest NCO Club you ever saw!

You outta get one of the lock boxes that you had said something about. I have one and it is VERY sturdy. It has a cable with loops on both ends. You run it around your seat bracket and then through the other loop. Then you put the loop inside the box and lock it up. Unless the scumbag brought bolt cutters or lock pick stuff it's going to stay put. Another thing I like about it's that it is mobile so you can use it in different cars or other places. I think it comes in three sizes so there has to be one that would fit your 1911. I can promise you its lock is stronger then any glove box lock. Heck of a lot easier then doing modifications. Plus you don't even have to move from your drivers seat to lock it up. Pull it out from under the seat, lock it up and slide it back under.

Wow..... Longwinded. Can you tell I like it?

Here is one from midway http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=274442

Or you could tacticool out your Mustang and take out the center console and put a 50 cal ammo can in it's place. Then you can lock that up.

Don't forget to duracoat the ammo can to get the full effect. :D

if you are leaving your gun in the car for up to 10 days at a time while you're at work, put it in the trunk. In the past , when I was in a car w/o a big center console i put my pistol under the drivers seat.

How secure is your company parking lot? Is it behind the guard shack and protected. etc?? If it is, making all these boxes, etc., seems a bit of overkill.

Take your gun off, wrap it in a coat and put it quietly in your trunk as you retrieve your windshield sunscreen so it looks innocuous enough. Even a locked glove box is not as secure as someplace in your trunk

Is there a passthrough from the interior to the trunk? If so, you should be able to set the gun in the back seat, get out, and move it to the trunk, all without ever taking it out of the car.

Check out Tuffy's lock boxes. they make several that replace factory glove boxes. (upgrades) Got one for my jeep, love it.Looks like factory made out of metal bolted down, with pry resistance lock. Down-side kinda small

If you don't want to go with the Glock then I'd opt for one of those cable boxes that go under the seat with your Sig. Or one of the other recomendations.

I have the Tuffy's in my Jeep as well. I checked and they don't make one for a Mustang. I can't seem to find anybody who does make anything in a cursory look, but I'm going to go with the others that you may want to consider some sort of modification to keep it out of sight.

My locked vehicles generally have a pistol in them as I can rarely legally carry a weapon (medical sales- can't take a gun into a hospital). Things out of sight don't attract thieves, and don't tell anyone either. That too invites thievery... Then, like you, the gun goes inside for the night and generally stays on or around my person. As said above, concealment is key. A brick and crowbar will defeat most things (besides my Tuffys) so I wouldn't bother trying to create an armored lock box...

Good luck!

Well, I looked on consolevault.com, and they only listed vaults for Ford trucks.

So, I did a google search for car vaults, Ford Mustang. Oddly, JCWhitney came up with a console vault product that is supposedly compatible with the Mustang; looks like it actually would store under your seat.

For a lot less money, JCWhitney also had a product from The Club; this one has a cable lock for your seat frame.

I do not see the glove box as more secure than the center console, once someone has broken into the car they are likely going to toss it, including the glove box esp. if it is locked.

The only real security are the better lock boxes if bolted down, though many of those are less than smooth to place a weapon in.

Personally I feel secure with my weapon in the center console on my truck and like that it is smooth, and quick to divest myself of my sidearm and place it out of sight.

I suspect many car smash and grabs occur either due to valuables being in sight, OR someone seeing something of value being secured in the vehicle. I don't want to spend a lot of time messing around and thus draw attention to myself.

Another thought is a well hidden area , works well. Each vehicle has convenient location for storage. I had a nylon holster up in the seat springs behind a metal brace. I could get it out easy, and it would have been impossible to find
