Glove box guns..

Short and sweet...Florida: Take your gun to work state. Always on me, except during work. It stays in the glove box in my car in my parking lot that I'm around all day. And it's locked.

The issue?

My lease was done May 3rd and gave that car back, with it's huge glove box.

Now, I regressed but in a way didn't..Got a Mustang GT 2000 5speed..Yay...

Small glove box...I used to always have my SIG, 1911, XD45 even...In the leases glove box. This Mustang ONLY fits my Glock 27 and not even with the extended mag. Only with the flush mag.

My question is, what can I do here? When I go anywhere that's not work the gun I have is always on me and that's not a problem, but I basically live at my job (ie: 7-10 days straight sometimes) always there. When I'm not I have my SIG or whatever else on my waistband.

Should I keep the Glock 27 at all times in the glove box when at work even though out of all the guns I have I feel very comfortable with them all. Mastered the SIG, the 1911, the XD45 and the Glock 22...See the pattern? All the fullsized ones mainly.

OR....what I've also thought about that scares the crap out of me...Leave my SIG or 1911 under the seat or in a backpack and holstered ????

OR....Buy one of those weird lock boxes for the car but have no idea where to put it because I'm legally not allowed to remove my firearm from my vehicle at any given time while I'm parked at my jobs parking lot. So it would have to be inside the cabin of my Stang.

Any suggestions?

(P.S. I tried to make it short and sweet...oops.)

Well, that's a bit of a conundrum. Can you modify the car in any way? I'm sure a fab shop or custom car shop would be willing and able to fab up a small lock box mount for you.

Might it not be possible to fab-up a small expansion area to the Mustang's glove box in order at least to fit the extended magazine, if not a larger gun?

Hopefully you bought it, leasing is almost always a terrible deal.

On topic, I keep a S&W Model 10 snubbie in my center console. Fits great, muzzle down and to the rear. With the addition of a small piece of wood in front of the muzzle, the butt is up nice and high where it's easy to grab. Have you no center console?

How about a lockable steel ammo box, or electrical box, chained or bolted, to the seat frame?
I was going to suggest to the floor, but you might not want to drill your new car.

I have no experience with Glocks, and have little desire to change that, but I understand that they are good pistols. So why not keep the mini Glock in the glove box full time and leave the others at home when you are in a work situation. Just be willing to spend a little extra range time with it, until you can shoot it well.

Imo, priority one is to make sure the gun is out of sight and that a thief would see nothing of value inside the car. A locked box, if visible, would give a thief reason to believe there is something valuable inside. If you can keep it out of sight and make it hard to remove from the vehicle, that would be even better.

Very happy with everyones very honest and real posts. I greatly appreciate it all.

I'm thinking about customizing the glove box somehow...Cutting the back of it so I can fit in one of my other guns when need be. But have to look into that.

lol No more lease!!!! I gave my lease back and BOUGHT this Mustang ;)

I do have a center console but I'd much prefer it be locked away. The center console doesn't have that option :( and it's kind of on the small side too.

The thing about the little safe bolted to the seat sounds good, but as someone just stated that'd give them reason to be curious and break my window and have all sorts of fun inside my car.

I really like my Glock..I just LOVE my SIG...... -___-

Any other ideas? I seem to be fresh outta them

Maybe if you got the lock box under your seat you could tint your windows so it would be harder to see inside of the car. They probably wont even be able to see it anyway but if it was bolted down and locked I dont believe anyone would spend the time trying to get into it. Also you could buy a car security system ( other then the handgun ) so if the windows get borken or someone tries to jimmy the door the alarm will go off, and thats enough to scare anyone off, and you said your close to your car at all times, and I dont think someone would cut your alarm wires so it doesnt go off and be able to pop open the lock box.

Usually under dash or behind the plastic panels there is some extra space. If you were inclined you could probably find the space to mount a holster out of sight. It wouldn't be easily reachable while driving, but you could always put the gun on your person when you get in the car.

If it has to be a locked container, your options will be limited by space and you will have to make some sacrifices. There may be lockable after market center consoles available, that would probably be ht e easiest thing to do.

Another thing to consider is maybe joining a mustang forum and posting this topic there, maybe someone has already come up with a good solution.

Google "console vault" to find a steel locking system that goes into your existing center console. You can get it with key lock or three-digit combo.

With pro burglary tools, it wouldn't be that hard to defeat. Against a typical smash and grab thief, it will provide a lot more protection than a regular console or glove box.

Do you have any idea how easy it is to pick almost any car lock? Most 4th graders could be taught in five minutes. Leaving a gun in your car is asking for it to be stolen.

Since it's easy to break into a car he should just go unarmed? This is ridiculous to me, a criminal breaks into a car, steals a gun, and it's somehow the owners fault? To me this kind of behavior does no one any good, just bend to the will of a criminal instead of maintaining a stance of prevention and protection.

It really irks me to see that attitude. Next someone will chime in with "if a thief steals a gun from your car, you've now armed the bad guys".:barf: I don't buy that BS one bit, the thief armed himself through theft, which happens to be illegal, and it's the victims fault? Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

Criminals will arm themselves through any means necessary, regardless of the law. That's why they are criminals, and why honest lawful people have to come up with ways to carry a gun all the time.

I can teach a 4th grader how to throw a brick through a window in about 5 seconds. ;)

Maybe you should get creative and stash it behind a door panel or other interior piece. Modify it so it can be easily removed with magnets or velcro. Heck, most of these newer cars just snap together anyway.

*Edit*
Also, in response to arming criminals, consider storing the gun and ammo separately. Perhaps keep the magazine in the locked glove box.

I have one that is bolted to the floor of my Nissan truck. A small single gun safe not much thicker than a large bound Bible. In fact my Chilton book is thicker than the safe. I know one fits under the seat of an RX8 Mazda my girlfriend has one in her car too. I did have to take the seats out to bolt them to the floor. Other than that it was not a problem.

I saw a lock box hada cable went around something solid in he car then under the seat it would go. Key lock or 3 dial lock.

Does the mustang have the eco boost engine? That is one heck of an engine. Google eco boost torture test and watch the youtube vid.

Modification of the glove box seems like the best idea. It's fairly simple to do with fiberglass. You may have a depth issue no matter what though since the A/C unit and blower motor are probably mounted behind the glove box. Another option might be the driver or Passenger side kick panel. Modify it with a compartment. I'm sure there's a place in the vehicle that you could build a compartment to stash your handgun but it might not be lockable. For what it's worth, most locks on glove boxes won't stand up to a good swift kick anyway so the lock may be a moot point. An aftermarket alarm system may be in order to keep thieves at bay (although a determined thief can beat an alarm system pretty quick). Does the back seat fold down? You might consider bolting a security box to the floor where it is easily accessible from the folded down rear seat.

+1. I'd rather have it next to me where I can get to it faster. I couldn't agree with you more, Irish.
