Glock or a 1911?

Back when I first "got into" handguns, I bought a Glock 17. Yea, I liked it. Yea, it did what it was supposed to do. So I bought a Glock 19. I actually shot it a bit more accurately, but something was still missing. I got fed up and sold them both, and ended up with a Beretta 92FS and a Colt M1911A1. I don't miss those Glocks one bit. Thinking back at it, the silly saying "couldn't hit the side of a barn, from inside the barn" was how I shot those Glocks. For what ever reason, I just can't shoot a Glock. They just don't fit me.

I own two Kimber 1911's, and although they are everything folks say about the 1911, beautiful, reliable, accurate and such, I would not choose either for AD or CC. I have shot many Glocks and would choose a Glock over a 1911 for a SD. However, my CC gun is a Kimber K6s 357 magnum. Personal choice. And just as caliber is a personal choice, so is the type and make of the gun itself. Choose the gun/caliber that you most like, and the practice and become more than familiar with it.

I have both and shoot both reasonably well. I carry the Glock for the higher capacity and less probability of a screw up. But either would work for carry, though the 1911 is a touch larger.

I never am impressed by the grip angle, ergonomics debate. Trained folks can shoot both to a reasonable level of usage.

Methinks someone was bored and created the account/question for the popcorn. ;)

Go with what feels good for the purpose required. Oh wait, OP didn´t state purpose . . .
HUGE requirement to make a decision. OP could have just easily posted ¨Sig or Glock¨ or ¨9mm or 45ACP¨. Maybe a question with a little structure along the lines of Goal/Objective/Scope/Purpose might have worked a little better. Sorry for the rant. W/O framework questions are meaningless.

I started my gun toting career with a 1911 in 1984.

I put a lot of miles on a 1911 and never felt under gunned. Also shot thousands of rounds in IPSC in the day.

Around 1999 we were issued Glock 35’s as duty guns and, after 10 years, we switched to Glock 22’s.

I can shoot a Glock well. But, if you are being held hostage, you want me to have my Wilson Master Grade .45.

Pure, unvarnished honest “my opinion” to follow.

The Glock is a fantastic gun. Quite accurate. Reliable, durable. Does exactly what it’s supposed to do quite well. But, I have dainty little hands. The Glock feels like holding the wrong end of a baseball bat to me. It has a decent trigger. But, I prefer either a longer trigger stroke or a thumb Safety on a carry gun.

The 1911 just drops into my hand. It’s a natural fit. I like everything about a 1911 but, I’m a little partial to that platform because of the tens of thousands of rounds I’ve put through them. A 1911 may require a bit of tweaking to get it running perfectly, or not. I think current 1911’s from the big boys are pretty good right out of the box.

Trigger

Glenn put it better and simpler than I did.

Less possibility of a screw up! For me I want a light crisp trigger for range work where a screw up should not result in a hole that bleeds.

Or no hole that bleeds when I want a hole that bleeds (manual safety)

Yes training, training, training. Stress and a huge Adrenalin dump? I'll take the weapon that is simplest to use......period.

Much like the double action revolver. That one from back in the day, the one that officers were taught NOT to cock that hammer manually.

I am not fond of a heavy trigger, I am just fine with a long 5 lb. pull and can achieve consistent combat accuracy with same.

Yes, this is Def. a popcorn thread......

I have 15 1911’s. Fourteen are full-size and one is a Commander sized AMT Skipper. I carry either the Skipper or a full-size. I recently bought a full-size Ruger Nightwatchman to be my CCW. A 1944 Remington Rand saved my life one morning. I’m kinda partial to 1911’s. I don’t have any problem carrying a full size pistol. I was a Tanker in the Army for 21 years. For the first 10 years I carried a M1911A1 and the last 11 years I carried an M9, all day everyday in the field.

I have a couple Glocks. A 22 and a 23. I bought them because the agency that I worked at the time for issued Glocks. You had to carry an issued weapon on duty. I liked to have the same weapon as my issued weapon. They live in one of my safes. I have six mags for each and about 2000 rounds of .40 S&W and stuff to reload for them. I haven’t fired them in I don’t know when. They’re okay, they’re good pistols, they’re just not my favorite.

I guess that you know what I’d choose. ;)

I love 1911s, but in my house the women are only casually interested in guns so I need things that are as simple (revolveresk) as possible..... Glocks are the go to semi-auto for that reason.

Every handgunner should have at least one 1911.
It has been in production since 1911....every manufacturer and their brother makes one....every one made sells...I wonder why ? They get the job done , they just work !

For the price point the OP posted, a Rock Island 1911 would be a good choice. I own several 1911's and my range queen is a Rock Island with a superb trigger job by my local gunsmith. The gun + trigger job was still less than $500 when I bought it.

Disclaimer: I am not a Glock fan, I don't own one.

I shoot Wally‘s cheap promo steel and aluminum case ammo through my Glocks beautifully, and I wouldn’t run any of this type ammo through any of my 1911’s on a dare!

while I have fired thousands of rounds through Glocks and 1911s. My arthritic hands do not like Glocks any more. The 1911 with light loads is still fun to shoot, but the trigger safety on the Gloks hurts my hands. The 1911 is (IMHO) takes a lot of care and maintenance to be reliable. If you are not going to shoot it a lot and learn how to maintain it, I would recommend a Glock or similar gun.

Currently the 1911 is my range gun and a S&W SD 40 VE is a carry gun, KISS for the old man. Glock, S&W M&P, Kahr, XD or any number of slimier will protect you if you take the time to learn how use them.

Find a range that has both, shoot a box through each gun and compare your scores.
A whole other question is if you want a tool or a hobby. If you want a hobby and the pride for the hardware that is at the core of it then get the 1911.

My price range for a 1911 is somewhere in the mid range of $600-$900. While searching for one that would fit in my price range I somehow ended up looking at Glocks and found out I really like the Glock 34.

I own & really like both Glocks and 1911’s in 9mm and .45ACP. I think the Glock 34 is better suited for competition. Personally I can shoot my Glock 17 and 19 about as well as I could shoot a borrowed 34, and my Glock 19 is more suitable for concealed carry although you can definitely carry a 34. I shoot the cheap steel & aluminum case ammo from Wally’s with my Glock 21 and I wouldn’t shoot this stuff through any of my 1911’s on a dare, my 21 shoots every type of ammo beautifully. I would also recommend you consider a 9mm 1911 such as a full length Springfield Range Officer, these are great shooters and you can usually shoot at least 3 boxes of factory 9mm for less than the cost of 2 boxes of factory .45ACP.

Glocks are a landmark design. Just look at all of the US PDs that carry them. My one and only Glock since 1989 is my Glock 17.

I love my 1911's, and don't feel like I am "less protected" when I carry one. However my EDC is a Glock.

With the Glock 30 I get the same great .45acp round, but more of them. I get a platform that is just as reliable, but smaller and easier to conceal than a full sized 1911.

A Glock 23 yields even more rounds without giving up much in the way of power.

So many choices!

Depends on what you would like to do with it. My 1911 is a great shooter, easy to clean, made of solid steel, and has a history of proven reliability which is almost second to none. Trigger pull is crisp, takedown and cleaning is easy. Concealed Carry? I cannot say, as I do not have a CC permit :)

The 1911 has that "aura of history" which the Glock lacks. AND, If you have always wanted a 1911, go for the 1911!! My father had a WWI 1911 which was a wonderful firearm. He sold it several years ago... :(
Always wanted one myself, and just last month I traded my shooter Luger P08 for a nice Colt Combat Elite in 9mm. I'm not looking back either.

If the choice is Glock or 1911, all in all.... the 1911 is a better value for the money. That's my opinion anyway.
