Glock 30 vs HK USPc vs Sig 245

Man, it's winding down to the point where I purchase my sidearm and I'm still undecided between the Glock 30, H&K USP compact, or Sig 245. Does anyone know if the Glock can be modified for .45 super? Or if the Sig has available 8-10 rnd clips? Cost is not a factor in this case. I want an all-purpose .45, (defense, showing off to friends, target shooting, concealability, overall-feel, & reliability). Suggestions?

Buy the gun you like best. They are all good.

I'd buy the H&K if it was my money.

I'll second the USP 45C....best all around gun of those three for the money. Sig would be a close second in my book, followed by the Glock. All great guns though. Buy what you like best of those three and rest knowing you made the right choice. Good luck!

Given your broad range of criteria I would choose a P220. Seriously. A great gun to show off, extremely accurate, wonderfully reliable, easy to shoot and fun to shoot for extended sessions, great feel in the hand, and you can conceal it. Why the 45 Super, by the way?

I love these HK preference questions!! I would definitely purchase the HK. The HK USP .45 comes stock-ready for the .45 super.
The HK can handle the hottest of rounds out there....with no problems feeding, or reliability. I am purchasing my next HK Tactical here very soon. Good luck!!!

Buy what you like, not what we like or what some magazine recommends. It's far better to wait until you've had a chance to rent and shoot them all. Nothing worse than getting a pistol that feels good in the store and badly out on the range. If you've shot them all and still can't decide, I'd say go for the P220. Great pistol and superb customer service. It's relatively slim, conceals well and is ah so accurate and fun to practice with.

So many pistols, so little money.

Go with the 245 sig I have a 220 and it is a great gun . the 245 is just a compact version..shoot them all and I would be willing to bet you will shoot the 245 more accurate rignt out of the box..and it carries very well..only problem they are hard to find in my part of the country..

Clownfish:

For the past couple of weeks, I have been going through my gun range's gun rentals. I own Glocks, Sigs, and HKs. But there are significant differences in the guns.

First, Sig messed up with the P245 and the P239. Hated it! (In Living Color style rhyme) The guns are extremely slide heavy and are not natural pointers as a well balanced gun should be. When shooting the P245, I noticed that from a contact ready or down position, when the P245 was raised to target, significant effort was needed to get sight alignment. Second, the grip is way too short and thin. Medium to large handed people will probably dislike. Third, you're limited to 8 rounds and for CC that's important. Fourth, accessories are hard to find for it since it never took off as a product.

If you're going Sig in 45 ACP, the P220 is the way to go. Liked it! Had one - liked it - but not enough to keep it. But I'd like to see you wear/carry a P220 (as large as a standard size 1911) IWB, BTW, or SOB! You will print! And with that hammer - come on - if its got a hammer, it was not well designed for CC. It can snag you or at least mini-jab your kidneys. Not concealable without a fanny pack unless you're a rather large fella.

The HK USP Compact in 45 has a little better fit and feel than that of a Kel Tec P111 but not much more. Hated it! First, the polymer receiver on those guns appears to be cheaply made. The slide does not run smoothly on that receiver even with some gun grease on the rails. Second, I found the USP in 9mm and 45 ACP to be ammo sensitive and prone to stovepiping with Winchester and Federal factory ammo. Third, the controls were a tad awkward - not intuitive. For a self defense or combat handgun, the controls should be natural to you.

The Glock 30 - Loved it! Have one. No crap though right! I trashed the others. But where are the raves on the USP and the P245. First, there aren't that many users of the HK USP 45 or the Sig P245s for a reason - no PDs are carrying them as I'm aware. But PD SWAT teams are adopting the G30 as a tactical gun. Go to glocktalk and read what they say about the gun. Second, the G30 is alleged by many Glock nuts to be the most accurate Glock out. Third, it is easy to clean in 5 minutes flat - if you're slow. Fourth, infallibly reliable and feeds everything but flat points and SWCs. Yeah, the G30 has its limitations. If I'm shooting SWC, its a wheelgun or 1911 for me. Fifth, it's real concealable - shorter than a G19 and only a tad thicker. But who else is going to allow you 11 rounds in this small package?

There is a reason why some guns are so popular for years at end. For a versatile 45 ACP gun, get the G30.

From a completely biased guy who has shot all three of the guns you're considering.

Wow duncan, thanks for the info,.. I'll definitely consider it. At first I was leaning towards the Glock 30 myself, I'm not sure why. They say your first instinct is usually the best. Does anyone know if G30 is .45 super/.400 corbon ready?

Don't fire .45 Supers in the G30. There is not enough slide mass, and this will cause a problem with the Super. In fact, Glock doesn't recommend shooting Supers in the G21.

Tom

I like the HK and the G30. Don't own either, but have shot them extensively at the range. I second the 220 over the 245. The Sig 245 feels like it was designed for the Oompa-loompa's (probably the only "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" reference on this board :) ) Waaay to short of a grip and too few rounds.

Get the HK .

jtducan "go to glocktalk and see what they think about it"

Well "no sh*t"

Go to daisy.com guess what they like or lorcintalk or maybe "howtothrowaturd.com" they say a well aimed turd is the only way to go.

I for one am shocked that the unbiassed opinions at glocktalk would reccomend a glock.

I own the USP 45c and I'm very happy with it. To me the fit and feel are very good, including the controls, but that's just personal preference. Overall feel is largely dependent on how it fits your hands, so pick it up and shoot it. I wasn't fond of the P220 controls, but again personal preference. As far as the frame rails and polymer durability, I don't feel it's an issue. My USP has digested over 7500 rds of ammo of various strength, from light target loads to almost 45 super (irritate the guy in the other lane strength) and it's not shown appreciable wear. The metal inserts at high-wear areas help. The slide runs on the receiver very smoothly, so no problems there. The standard finish on the slide is very durable. It's my carry piece and it hasn't shown any wear at all, even here on the sweaty Texas coast. Therefore, the stainless option is probably more of a showing off consideration (one of your concerns, I believe). I don't know if jtduncan shot some lemons, but my example digests all ammo without a hitch, including flat points and SWCs (slight feed ramp polishing helps with this). It's very accurate out of the box and points easily and naturally (for me), but I don't know how it compares with the other two you mentioned. It's easy to field strip and clean as well.

Some negatives. 1) It's big! The 45c is only compact in comparison to the full-size, which is darn big itself. That's a CCW issue, so choose your carry system carefully if you buy it. 2) Accessories and extra mags are very expensive. The only light for the USP is the H&K tac light and it ain't cheap! Extra mags from the factory are around $40-50, but Glock mags are dirt cheap as you know. I've seen hints of aftermarket mags, but I don't know how good they are. Also, there's nothing bigger than 8 rounders for the 45c, so keep that in mind.

That's my $0.05 worth, so choose the one that fits your needs best. They're all good guns, though.

John

45 Super is not recommended in the USP45C because it doesn't have the 2nd recoil dampening spring that the fullsize has. Officially, H&K doesn't recommend 45 Super in any of their guns. Triton ammo says it's OK. I love my fullsize USP45 but can't tell you about the compact nor G30 or Sig245.

I once read a post about a guy who fired .45 Super from his Glock 21. After a few rounds, he heard a nasty sound. His barrel had split(f@cked up). While he was stunned at his busted Glock,.. his friend, who was also firing .45 Super from an HK USP, had no problems.
Just thought I'd share :o)

I own a Sig P220 and it is a great pistol! I own a Glock 30 and it is a great pistol! Is there an echo? If possible the Glock is boxier but both shoot equally well. I have never owned or shot a HK. Why? They have never appealed to me and seem to be complicated Glocks. I have never heard anything bad about HKs but as I said they just never did a thing for me. Regards, Richard.

I went with the USPc, it's bigger than the others, but my Glock 21 was a P.O.S. and Sig puts the controls in the wrong place, so I ruled them out.

875 rnds of all design, fired properly, limp wristed, sideways, upside down triggering it with my pinky, not one jam.

And I can carry it Condition One!

i'd go with the glock 32....i know you didn't mention it as one of your choices but here me out:

1. IMNSHO the .357sig outperforms the .45 as a carry round. the .357sig HP has a MUCH better chance of opening up than a .45 especially in a short barreled gun and it has good penetration and expansion. (i do however think the .45 is a better home defense round)
2. you get more rounds on tap than with any of the guns you mentioned and in a more concealable package (exept for the sig). the G32 is slimmer than the G30 and USPc and that makes a big difference in concealbility.
3. you can convert it to .40 and 9mm easily. if you decide you like the .40 more than carry that and you can use the 9mm for the range. (don't try to convince me that this isn't possible...if you wanna hear more about the 9mm conversion then ask).
4. the .357sig is a great gun to show to your friends also. you don't need a .45 super barrel to make it a cool gun. the .357sig makes quite a BOOM when you shoot it and that will impress everyone around you and the "fancy" round will impress people and it makes it look like you know what you're doing since you choose a new and different round than everyone else.
5. the .357sig is a more accurate round than the .45 (especially out of a short barreled gun). it has a flatter trajectory so you have the same point of aim out to 50 yards.
6. as i said the G32 is pretty concealable. i held one next to some other guns (sig 245 for one) and i would have much rather carried it around all day than the sig. it's much lighter than sigs and is quite slim. it also balances well in my hand.
7. as for reliability well its a GLOCK, nuff said. when you combine the reliability of a glock with the feeding friendly, bottle necked .357sig round you got a pretty reliable combo on your hands.
8. as for overall feel thats completely up to you and one of the big factors you should consider. IMHO the G32 feels much better in my smallish hands than the G30. the G30 feels like a pregnant whale in my hands its so big. same with the HK USPc .45.
9. as for being outgunned by BGs i don't think you have to worry. you can have 14 rounds of .357sig JHPs on tap and if you carry extra mags even more. the .357sig is fairly new but all the actually street accounts of where it was used so far have been great!

I was considering the .357Sig but decided on .45 because the bigger/heavier bullet is more appealing to me. I wouldn't mind one for a backup or as my "left-hand" gun.

Isn't Rex Feral the author of that banned "Hitman" book? Who in reality is an old lady who got her ideas from watching too many movies and crime stories?
