Glock 19X

Follow-up to my own thread from a couple weeks ago. The former Glock 19 MHS officially is coming soon as the Glock 19X.

https://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=592008

For anyone who doesn't know, the G19X will be a Gen 5 G19 slide/barrel mated to a Gen 5 G17 grip. (Something much like the SIG P320 Carry and other full/mid hybrids.) Like the MHS entry, it'll be all desert tan, but, unlike the MHS, apparently it will not have the external safety.

I don't see the point of these. If I'm carrying concealed, I want a shorter grip for concealment, and decent sight radius. If it's duty carry, I also want that sight radius...

I looked a little more closely, and it turns out this thing isn't exactly a shortened Gen 5 G17 frame in desert tan:

• The mag well is not flared like the Gen 5's, and the well lacks the cut-out on the front strap.

• Accordingly, Gen 5 mags with the extended lip will not fit.

• The grip has a lanyard loop.

• The bevel on the front of the slide is now continued around the front of the frame as well.

These guys dig it:

These guys are shills.

I’d describe myself as a pretty big Glock fan. I can see why some would want this. But honestly a lot of the Youtube personalities are no different than the gun rags now. It’s all positive reviews and two thumbs up, and frankly that’s especially true of Sootch00.

Patrick at the Firearm Rack left TFB (who also gave it a thumbs up), because he was tired of being a shill. He was honest in his review of it, telling about multiple problems he had.

I'd be interested in a 26, 19, 17, or 34 in the new FDE finish, as I think it'll hold up better than cerakote. But not really interested in losing sight radius and velocity while keeping the large grip. Glad to see they ditch the flared magwell and front cutout. Also please ditch the little bump at the bottom of the front strap, so we can use gen 5 floorplates in it.

Points taken, but they did a perfectly good job of pointing out the objective differences between the 19X and the Gen 5s from which it was derived, which is all I really cared about. Works for me.

I mean, we already know that it's a good gun. How do we know this? Because it's like cars these days: Everybody makes fine products now. That didn't used to be true (as recently as the '90s, maybe later), but it's true now. Same thing with semi-autos (from the reputable makers I buy from, anyway, and you can probably figure out who they are). It's a mature technology, and lotsa people have it figured out

The rest is entirely subjective. The real question is this: Why should anyone buy this particular Glock? There's no definitive answer, but I suspect it will sell well simply because it's different, but not too different. I own a G19 and a G17, and I can't help but think that a hybrid is kinda cool.

But the "feel" they alluded to? That comes down to physics, and I don't really see how it'd feel any different from a G19 with a 17-round mag, and I can already rig that up.

Oh I don’t doubt that it will function. I would bet that it does. I also know it will sell, like I said in your last thread about this pistol before we had all the details. But a lot of this hype. And that’s fine, that’s how the market works. I just take everything from YouTube with a very large grain of salt.

I like it for size, the barrel gets me to the non pokey stage and the full size grip fits me better than the shortened G19 grip. If I'm going shorter, I usually go all the way down to the G26.

The G17 frame fits my large hand very nicely.
I have pre-ordered a 19X because I like the differences between them and the regular Gen. 5.
I am getting a frame/slide/mags/box in the Coyote color for the same price as a run-of-the-mill common black version.
I have a G17 Gen. 4 and looking forward to shooting one without the finger grooves.

I like it. The full size grip works better for me than even the 19/23 grip. I conceal a fullsize Glock or S&W 44 magnum now. Grip size VS concealment is so cliche these days.

My initial thought is, “cool” but then I stop and wonder do I really need this. Well, I guess I don’t really need any new guns, but not sure what this really does different other than look sort of cool. I suppose if you are in the market for a similar handgun this probably deserves a look, but if this niche in your collection is filled not sure it is unique enough to warrant the investment.

If they had gone for a 17 slide on a 19 frame it would be more useful. This is the antithesis of what a concealment gun should be.

These will sell to Glock fans that find a way to justify yet another Glock (I hear ya, boys) ...

But for me, if I want G17 grip size, I want G17 barrel length. If I want G19's compact size, I want the shorter grip.

This seems to fill a niche that wasn't there, ahha.

Everyone says that it fills a niche that no one wants, but no one seems to understand that Glock did not come out with this gun with civilian concealed carry in mind. They have several other models for that, and they know it. They built it for military trials. Then introduced it to the civilian market, because they know there's a demand for anything military-like.

Everyone's complaining about the 4" barrel with full size grip, but think about all the other guns that are like that. SR9, XD9 service, XDm 3.8 with full size grip, FNS, FN509, FNX, P320 carry, P07. I don't hear too much complaining about them, but I guess people always have to find something to complain about with Glock.

And it's not limited to the striker-fired world. The Colt Commander (4 1/4" barrel) and the Beretta PX4 Storm (4" barrel) come to my mind as well. Also (and I've never seen anyone make issue of this), the basic "full size" S&W M&P has always followed the template of a Colt Commander: 4 1/4" barrel with a standard grip. You name a size configuration out there and somebody wants it; the question would be how many people want it and why.

My thoughts have always focused on the business equation. Without the MHS requirement, would Glock ever have developed such a thing? Unlikely. But with the R&D and tooling already done, now they have a chance to recover (and likely profit from) the investment. On the other hand, if the 19X didn't have the mystique of having been a made-for-the-military product, would there be as much market interest? Probably not. It's a bit of a circular reference.

Hopefully, it remains in the catalogue. They could use a Gen 5 lower/frame as well.

Lol, I agree. No matter what the firearm is, the gun rags will give a big thumbs up. Ruger, Glock, Sig etc. I am sure many of these Rag writers are on the payroll of big Companies.

I believe the large grip and shorter slide is more for law enforcement than a civilian concealment. Some call this size a carry model as opposed to a compact or do I have that reversed?

OK, fair enough. So what would you do and say as a reviewer? Can you name us a modern firearm from a major manufacturer that deserves a "big thumbs down"?
