Glock 19 vs. Walther P99

I'm not looking to buy either of these guns (I already have a P99 and a G23). However, I've seen lots of posts calling these two the perfect "If I could only have one gun" guns. I tend to agree, as both have available non-LEO hi-caps that hold lots of rounds (15-16) of a good cartridge (9mm), and while they're not full-sized guns can serve as such but are easier to carry. Also, both are reliable and accurate.

Granted, the Glock has been around longer, hi-caps are a little cheaper, more leather is available, and you can get a LaserMax for it. Then again, the P99 holds one more round and has adjustable grips and sights.

I know that both are excellent guns. My question is, if you have to pick one, which would it be?

P99 regular capacity magazines are extremely scarce, and insanely expensive. Glock 19 pre-bans are a lot more common, and still relatively affordable.

I think the G19 is the bee's knees for CCW, but I liked my P99 very much as well. I concede that the P99 has much better ergonomics, and better sights out of the box. Trigger system is different, with the P99 functioning like a traditional DA/SA, but that's largely personal preference. The P99 can be adjusted to different hand sizes with the interchangeable backstraps, which is a huge plus. The Glock is much cheaper, and it's a lot easier to shop for leather for a medium-frame Glock.

All in all, the P99 is a Porsche, the Glock is a Mercedes SUV with an Army paint job. Both will work just fine, but for an everyday carry tool I chose the G19. They're common, spare 15-rounders are still all over the place, and I don't have to wince when I bump it against something. The P99 is a beautiful pistol, and will do the job every bit as well as the Glock, but I always babied it more than I do my Glocks. That said, I'll probably end up getting another P99 soon.

I don't have the Walther. But I just love my G19. I often go to buy a new gun, and then consider another G19. It just fits my hand perfectly. I shoot it well. That is the reason to buy a gun. Shoot it well. Fit's the hand. And is reliable.

I had sworn off Glocks last year and still picked up a 2nd gen G17 during the summer...I missed having one in the safe :( I keep telling myself the P99 is so much nicer, but I HAVE TO sell one to get the other and it's just not happening..yet

Don't know about the Walther P99; but the Glock 19
would definitely be hard to beat.  :)

I'd opt for the G19, simply because I own one and know nothing of the Walther.

As the others clearly stated, the G19 is exceedingly hard to top.

Branrot, I might be missing something here, but I don't understand what all the hubbub is about hi-caps. When I buy a gun, I buy a GUN, not a magazine. IMO, the idea of hi-caps is just the idea of having something that's not allowed anymore, so you can be 'cool' at the range. In practical terms, if you can't hit what you're shooting at with 10 rounds, you're not going to hit it with 15. Also, the whole concept of magazines is that you can slide in a new one in less than a second or two.

That said, if you were to ask my opinion, gun for gun, I'd go with the P99 in a heartbeat. It inherits the best of the Glock features, but goes one step beyond. Better ergonomics, better trigger, better looking, more features, awesome accuracy. Aftermarket accessories will continue to grow, as the gun gains in popularity.

Before you decide, I'd strongly recommend you shoot both, then decide. If you're in the NJ area, you're welcome to spend some range time with me, and shoot mine.

You'll simply not catch me paying a hundred bucks for a magazine. Ain't gonna happen. Folks, you can buy a CUSTOM MADE holster for that kind of money! Ammo. Heck, you could almost buy a Dillon Square Deal press (used, of course) for that kind of cash outlay. For ONE magazine!

Ain't happening. I'm a 1911 guy anyhow. I guess that's why I don't understand why someone feels the need to carry a box of shells inside the handgrip of their sidearm. Eight in the mag and one in the pipe works for me.

I plan to hit what I'm aiming at. :)

I would like to add something to my previous post though. I do NOT support the Crime Bill of 1994 just because I refuse to spend a hundred bucks for a pistol mag. Federal legislators were wrong to pass a law that is clearly in violation of the Constitution. Now that it's the "law of the land", we are forced to fork over a picture of Ben Franklin for something that cops can purchase for eighteen bucks.

That is surreal.

I would go for the g19, although I must say I have never shot a Walther. I'm sure it is a great gun but I just love the simplicity of the Glock not to mention all of the other great Glock attributes.

For conceled carry I have a G19. I also use only factory loaded rounds and 10 round mag.s. (10 in the gun and 2 mags of 10 each in holder) Total of 30 rounds, If that doesn't get the job done well I should have said my prayers more! (High cap mag.s are too highly priced and to change to a fresh mag so easy to do)

I use this same setup for IDPA , and though Im not on the top of the score list I feel very comfortable with the G19 . The gun fits me well and is a dream to carry. I am of a very slim build and those who know me already know that I am armed,(hence are you happy to see me or is that your Glock on your hip ? ) .

In real life I go about and no one has a clue that I have a sidearm under my coat .

My G19 came stock with adjustable rear site. Not that it it is a great plus. In the real world who is going to take the time to use sites (Hand eye, fire) but for long shots its a plus! Anyway I think the G19 is a good gun !

My P99 has a loaded chamber indicator My Glock does not

My P99 has a cocking indicator my glock does not

My P99 has a double action and a single action pull my glock does not

My P99 shoots tighter groups than my glock.

My P99 fired off some military suplus ammo with no misfires my glock had quite a few.

My P99 has a decocker my glock does not

My P99 has a tigger pull that is superb my glock does not

My P99 has 3 different back straps to ajust the grip length to my hand my glock does not.

My P99 has three different interchangeable front sights for sighting the gun in with different trajectories of ammo my glock does not.

My P99 is not a bad looking gun, my glock wins first prize for the ugliest handgun ever made.

My Glocks high caps were only 25 dollars cheaper, big deal, next year my P99 mags will be worth double what I paid for them. They someday will be worth more than the gun itself.
They were a very good investment. I have six of them and will buy more in the future for a long term investment.

How about the "best" of both worlds. If only Walther would make a compact version of the P99 with a chopped grip to get it down to G19 size. That extra 1 1/2" for the 10rd mag baseplate could be done away with.

Are you listening Walther?

Am I am the only person who thinks the Walther P99 is the uglier of the two? I own a full sized P88 and I wouldn't consider a P99 unless it was the bargain of the year. What would make it the bargain of the year? A price of about $300. I like my Glocks and consider them great pistols. Regards, Richard

I like hi-caps. I normally don't carry extra mags, so given the choice between carrying 16+1 rounds or 10+1 rounds, I'll take the extra 6. Is it worth the extra expense of the hi-caps to not have to carry an extra mag? I can't answer that for everyone, but for me it is.

Also, it seems that many of you like the G19 because you've never shot the P99. If you haven't shot one, you really should give it a try. I'm not saying your G19 is inferior, I'm just saying you'll be mighty impressed with the P99.

Leej:

I'm still a little confused - which pistol do you prefer ??

Rovert:

You must be assuming that one-shot-stops and single, stationary assailants are constants in this world.

Unfortunately, where I live, Murpy's law dictates that I will probably encounter three BG's, all of whom have enough sense to run or duck, and all of whom will be tanked up on coke or meth to the extent that it will take three or four shots each to stop them (assuming that I don't miss while I'm moving to cover and ducking).

Maybe I can sell my high cap mags and move to your neighborhood.
