Glock 19 substitute

Guys, maybe 10 years ago I met a deputy sheriff at a IPSC match who had a bad limp. Talked with him awhile and he told me he had had 7 surgeries after his Glock got tangled in his patrol car seat belt and shot him down the length of his leg.

Shortly after that discussion, my Glock 19 was relegated to vehicle carry only, and that with a loaded magazine, an empty chamber, and pistol in "fired" position. Subsequently, it has rarely seen carry use.

This question is prompted by a discussion over in tactics and training on Glock ND's.

I haven't really given it a whole lot of thought over the last 10 years, but now I am thinking of either replacing the Glock with a suitable auto pistol, or supplementing it with one which I will actually carry. I dearly enjoy shooting the G19, and appreciate its quick trigger reset and good accuracy in my hands, but I don't trust the so-called trigger safety on that pistol any more. I'm thinking of perhaps something with DA/SA and a thumb or grip safety, and haven't been looking at new offerings for quite some time.

I think I actually favor a DA/SA arrangement, but would like a replacement to have at least 15 rounds, be as compact as a Glock 19, and as light weight, with night sights. Years ago I liked the CZ75 Compact, but that's still a heavy piece.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I'm not trying to say anything derogatory about the Glock 19, I like mine. I just don't trust it for CCW.

If you're looking for something the size of the G19 in a DA/SA trigger, I can't think of anything closer than CZ P07.

You might also consider the Sig P250 compact. Is DAO, but it's the most buttery smooth DAO trigger you'll ever feel. It didn't get a lot of popularity because most people don't know how to shoot double-action guns, but if that's your thing, it's a real winner.

Check out the Ruger SRC (compact) series.
They have a manual safety.
And you won't be disappointed in how they shoot, either.

If negligence convinces you not to use a product, I'm not sure how you use any product. I'm not trying to be mean, snarky, etc. But that story raises some questions in the first place, and nothing about it seems to indicate that a DA/SA arrangement would have stopped the discharge. If anything maybe a manual safety.

HK USP Compact or P2000. I know the OP mentioned the CZ Compact being too heavy. The aluminum framed versions, rather than the steel framed, should be noticeably lighter. Though I have nothing against the P-07 and have been trying to find one locally.

Da/sa nod goes to the px4 storm compact with honorable mentions to the H&K compacts, p2000sk, and ups compact.

Closer to the glock is the Springfield xd line that adds a grip safety in addition to the similar trigger style safety.

Check out an HK P30S with the "S" thumb safety. You can cock & lock it with the Variant 3 DA/SA trigger variant, or you can engage the thumb safety when it's decocked. The stiff Variant 3 DA trigger pull enables you to carry with the safety off, or you can get the P30 Variant 3 without the thumb safety, or it can be removed if you decide you don't like or want it. Since it's hammer fired you can practice thumb-covering the hammer on the P30 without the safety when you reholster the gun.

If you don't like the heavy @12lb DA trigger of the Variant 3, you can get the Light LEM Variant 1 or the Regular LEM Variant 2 P30S with the thumb safety. The HK LEM triggers are excellent once you've practiced with them.

Thanks for the input on available semi automatic pistols After some thought, I think I'll get a Smith and Wesson 586 L-Comp.

Sorry if I ruffled feathers with a credible story which struck me then, and strikes me now, as having come from a credible person. Won't do THAT again.

Moderator, you can close this thread if you wish.

Seems like you already found something, but I'll give a plug to one of the offerings from HK as well. The P2000sk is about the same size as a Glock 26, and you can get a V3 for DA/SA. You wanted closer to a G19, which would be closer in size to a USP 9c. There are also some models from Sig, although they are a bit heavier.

So, trigger got caught in something. (When it should have been in the holster.)

A couple technological solutions to that:

"The Gadget". If I understand it right, gives an extra margin of safety while hostering by disconnecting the striker while holstering.

A Springfield XD, with grip safety.

I feel like the no safety is part of the selling point for glocks. If you feel the need to modify them like that it seems maybe a new gun should just be purchased, like the OP was asking about.

I feel like everybody else was helping him spend his money and I could point out a less expensive alternative.
I also feel like he can look at the catalogs himself.

This thread isn't about whether the deputy's story is true. It's about the OP wanting a new pistol.

Possible options on that size range include the SR9c, M&P 9c, some CZs. Personally, I'd be looking at the XDm 3.8" compact.

Glock 19 sized DA/SA would lead me to the CZ P-07 or the Beretta PX4 compact. Both fine firearms.

My lightweight, alloy framed CZ-75D PCR fills this role. It is similar to the CZ Compact, but lighter weight.

If you like your Glock, you would probably like the XD better. It comes with a grip safety normally, but they also make one with an additional thumb safety, which I really like too! Check them out.

I thought I was clear the first time. This thread isn't about the truthfulness of the deputy's story. The OP believes it, and wants a new gun as a result.

I've cleaned up this thread. Any more posts that are here merely to quibble about whether the deputy told the truth will result in infractions.
