Glock 19 or Glock 23 - Just Cannot Choose

Thanks Again Everyone

Tamara,

I know that you like the Glock design, but I don't ever recall you recommending the .40's, I believe you have one of the 10mm's right ?

As someone involved in the retail of these firearms I just wondered what your opinions on the 22/23/27 are.

Regards,

Mike H

New to the Glock Thing...

Thanks to my Wife!!! We were looking at a Beretta 92FSC for me and the guy behind the counter showed her a 19 and she really liked it. In fact, she liked it so much that she went with me to test fire one at a gun shop/rental place here in town and the only other gun she's fired as well is a Colt Commander 9mm. When balancing the simplicity of employment of either pistol, both she and I think the Glock would be a better choice...

I'd never considered either until today really and she was impressed by the 19. The only compact they had for sale in the store though was the 23, and I felt more inclined to the 23 for all the reasons listed above, in particular the fact that I won't be longing for a $100+ standard-capacity mag.

I'd load down some .40 stuff for her to shoot regularly, but would the "feel" of a light .40 load in a 23 be comparable to a factory 9mm round in a 19? I'm not talking recoil exclusively, just the overall "feel" of a gun.

Check Six.

I have both a G19 and G23, and also two G21's, G17, and a G34. I have on my permit the G19, G23, and G22. Ok, 9mm ammo is cheaper, but hicaps for both the G19 and G23 are at a premium. Recoil is definetly greater with a G23(I use a 22 lb spring in mine). As far as US LEO choosing the G19 over the G23, as in the DEA, that's based on bias, not actuals.
You need to decide what you want this handgun for. And that's for yourself, not based on what everyone else thinks you need. The G19 and G23 are physically identical, except for round count and weight. One thing, since the 9mm has so much less recoil, you will shoot it more....

Actually, out of the seven Glocks I've owned, three have been G23's and one was a G23C. My most probable next handgun purchase is a used G23C we have in the shop. All three of my G23's went over 30k rounds with no breakage or bobbles of any kind and were the guns that sold me on Glocks in the first place. As much as I love my G29 and G30, I'd recommend the G23 as the "all-round" Glock in a heartbeat; small enough to tote, big enough for an accessory rail, capacity like a 9mm and a bore size that starts with "4". What's not to like? ;)

Tamara,

Thanks, can I assume that neither yourself nor your clientelle have experienced "problems" with the .40's (I think we all know which problems we're talking about here).

If so, this is high praise indeed.

Thanks

Mike H

PS
Hope business is good.

G19

The G19 seems to be the perfect match between pistol size and caliber. It makes one hell of a combination. I especially like the feel of the 2nd gen over the 3rd gen. Given the current state of affairs, the wide availability of 9mm is also a plus. Also the 9mm is very capable as a pistol cartridge.

I love the G19! It is was what lead me to purchase my G26!!! 9mm is an excellent round! I trust my life with it!

I have a 19, 23, and 32 (357SIG).

By far my favorite is the 19. It is easier to shoot with both standard and +P ammunition. Ammo is cheaper - about $110/case vs. usually > $150 delivered for a case of .40.

The 19 is a nice small handy pistol, but holds 15 rounds if you get pre-bans. The 23 only holds 13, which is getting pretty close to 10 rounds.

Though ideally, I shoot with the same accuracy the model 19 and 23, I maintain my accuracy with the 19 longer because of less fatigue, and I can accurately shoot the 19 much faster than the 23.

Finally, well-designed 9x19 self-defense ammunition (CCI/Speer GD, Federal Hydrashok, Proload, Rem GS, etc) will do the job if you do. Since it's often easier to deliver more accurate hits faster with 9x19, that is often an advantage.

I prefer the .40 over the 9mm, for the fact that the 9mm will not always knock down big metal poppers, where as the .40 probably will. I say go for the Glock 35, I have found this weapon to be extremely reliable & 15-round magazines are still easily available for it.

I have owned both and prefer the G19. Excellent gun, fairly accurate and very inexpensive to shoot and I personaly do not feel that the 9mm is an ineffective round with good shot placement.
