Glock 19 or Glock 23 - Just Cannot Choose

I can't choose between the G19 and the G23.

The 19 has more ammo, and fewer safety concerns, in addition to cheaper ammo.

The 23 has a more effective round, still has hi-caps available and is the choice of the FBI (over the 19)

Recoil isn't an issue for me with these firearms as I would rate it as negligible in either (and I'm fairly recoil sensitive)

Which would you choose and why.

G23 was my choice. I was willing to give up 2 rounds in the full capacity clips for the larger rounds. I also didn't mind the added recoil (although it is significant since these are lightweight guns). The biggest advantage to the G19 is the inexpensive ammo. You can often find 9mm ammo as cheap as 99 bucks for 1000, whereas the cheapest .40 ammo is generally over 150.

I like the 19. Either round is effective with good shot placement...19 gives you a slightly higher capacity with standard cap mags, and lots more money for practice ammo. More practice=better shot placement=more effective, IMO.

Glock 19

Here is why I'd pick the Glock 19:

Cheaper ammo costs (more practice), quicker follow up shots, better accuracy (IMO), and slightly better inherent reliability (again IMO).

I have shot both, and think they are both good choices. I personally own a Glock23 and it the only gun in my house that is never unloaded. I like the 40, its a good round, the recoil doesn't bother me because I grew up shooting 45auto. So when it was time to get a Higher cap modern design I went for glock 40's models 22 and 23. I'm Pretty happy with my choices.

Really Either way you are going to do good.

G19

- cheaper ammo
- higher capacity
- 15-rounders are cheaper than the G23 13-rounders
- easier recoil for some, which is good when teaching another person how to shoot.

If it matters at all to you, the GLOCK was designed around the 9mm cartridge and later scaled up to .40 using the same size frame and slide. It doesn't bother me, but some don't like the idea that the .40 version is not as beefed up as the 9mm.

G23

I have a G23 and a G30, I absolutely love both. I have shot the G19 and it just feels, weak. I have a Taurus PT92 and I love that gun, I just think 9mm is a weak round.

I have shot 40, 45acp, 38, 357, 44, 357Sig and 9. I think the 9 is too small but that is my opinion.

I do however want to purchase a G19 eventually when I have some more money so I can have a G for the major calibers.

Either gun would be a great choice though, im just partial to the more powerful loads.

Ummm, get some real 9mm ammo and it doesn't feel so "weak". :D

All kidding aside, I think 9mm is very adequate for self defense. Is it the best? Who knows. Is there really a "best" self defense round? I don't think so...

I love my new 19. Wouldn't trade it for a 23 but I'd buy a 23 to have, or I may just get a .40 barrell for my 32. I like 'em all!!

I chose the 19 because 9mm is cheaper than .40 S&W. Besides, if I want to shoot .40 S&W all I have to do is buy a conversion barrel for my 20.

23 gets my vote. I know lots who like the 9mm. I don't. Sold my last 9mm handgun within the last six months. Really like the 23 package. Yup, the 9mm is cheaper than the .40. But for me (YMMV), I chose to pay for the extra mm.

It's all a tradeoff, of course, because one can get more oomph from a 10mm than the .40 (10mm Kurtz?). There are lots who swear by the 9mm. Both are great guns.

Let us know what you finally decide!

cheaper to shoot 9mm

9mm tends to be more accurate for most shooters due to the lighter recoil.

and 9mm shoots well out of carbines and at long distances. Its trajectory for target shooting purposes is better than with the 40SW.

My 9s are more accurate than my 40s.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I find the 23 incredibly mild to shoot, but I have major concerns about chamber safety.

Many, many people would consider this attitude to be naiive but I took a good long hard look at the brass after firing and it was visibly bulged. I have not seen 9mm brass so obviously on the edge.

Having said all that, I love the extra punch that the .40 gives you. No round is perfect and all handgun rounds are under-powered, but I look at 9mm and think "well I could see someone walking away from a hit with this", I look at a .40 and I think "this will put someone down for good".

I have yet to decide (or put the $ together), but I am considering getting the 23 and swopping out the original barrel for a Bar-Sto or KKM in stainless and having some Ashley Express Tritium big dots fitted.

In my mind such a package would quite probably be the most formidable carry or house gun package available today.

The G19 is also one heck of a good gun however, no question. As someone said, you just can't go wrong with either.

Thanks again

I dont understand your post. You say that recoil is not an issue with you, yet you say you're recoil sensitive. The 19 has much less felt recoil than a 23. I carry a 23 all the time and when I do shoot a 19, it feels like a squib load in the 23. Big difference!

Captain,

Let me explain.

I am, or at least thought that I was, recoil sensitive. For example I find that the recoil of the Walther P99 in 9mm is uncomfortable and that the recoil and blast of the HK USPc .357 Sig is downright unmanageable.

But when I shot the Glock 23, a light gun in a heavy caliber, it was like shooting a .22LR, and that was the point I was trying to convey. Since the Glock 19 has an even lighter recoil than the G23, recoil is not likely to be an issue for me in the selection process.

Hope this makes sense.

G23.

10-rd mags are less annoying (three-quarters full instead of two-thirds), .40 cal definitely no worse in the stopping power department, and most folks have had good results with drop-in 9mm barrels.

The guy that said the 9mm is week is full of it and does not have a clue what he is talking about. ....9mm is the most successful pistol round ever developed .

Strangely, no one who says the 9mm is a "weak" or "underpowered" round will allow themselves to be shot with one.
