Glock 19 for newbie

That is exactly on target. Go find a basic handgun course that instructs you on various guns - revolvers, semis of different mechanisms.

Mechanical solutions are always offered first when the real variance is mindset, skill and training.

The Glock 19 has supplanted the S&W Model 10 as the "basic handgun". It's easy to learn and to train others to shoot. That's the biggest reason most trainers recommend it over other (perhaps superior) designs.

Nice try, but that would be the Glock 17.

The Glock 19 is meant more for CCW usage and not for duty use in an open holster like how LE uses Glock 17s.

I've admitted this before and I'll do so again. I did have a negligent discharge not long after my first semiatuo. I had two mags, one with snap caps, one without, and I thought I grabbed the one when I grabbed the other.

Tunnelrat... I had the exact same thing happen to me. Snap caps and all.

No one's fault but our own. Not the gun's, not the snap cap's, ours.

Not really. The Glock 19 is a standard duty pistol for many organizations, including the NYPD, SOCOM, MARSOC, and NSWC.

Its size means it's well-suited to CCW use as well.

Personally I would have rather seen him start out with a DAO with a long trigger pull so he can master the basics. But that's just me.

The Glock 19 can technically be considered (read "is") a double action only (DAO) firearm. The "long" or length of the trigger pull is vague in comparison to what(?).

For an instructor, should you wish to teach your student with a different trigger feel, Glock does have parts to make the trigger pull heavier and springs which will even reset without cycling the slide.

Yeah, two MDPD officers I know carry the Glock 19 as their duty gun and they off duty gun.

One went to the Glock 43 recently though.

In all honesty, the only thing the 17 offers over the 19 as a duty pistol are two additional rounds of ammunition (and the 19 can of course use 17 magazines).

One could say the additional sight radius of the 17 is a benefit, but many shooters (myself included) find that they shoot the 19 better than the larger 17. Go figure.

What are your thoughts of a brand new shooter with no experience with a semi and very little experience with a revolver buying a Glock 19 for his CCW. I'm not bashing the Glock by no means but I think there are other options for a newbie. I think a Glock 19 is a very good option for a CCW if your an experienced handgunner. What are your thoughts?

If the newbie takes his new service pistol and enrolls in a training course such as the NRA Basic Handgun Safety course, then he / she is ahead of the game, and a Glock 19 is a great choice. If the newbie enrolls in the course with a rental, before even buying the gun, they will probably tell him / her what I was told when I took the class years ago, which is to keep renting or borrowing different guns for at least six months then pick the one that works out the best for your intended purpose for the pistol, which is the best advise you can give a new shooter.

Some shooters find the Glock to be unweidly and "block like" if you will.

Some prefer guns such as the Berettta and Springers which have more of a countour on to them.

G19 outsells the G17 by at least 3:1....

WHOA WHOA THERE! Don't let the facts get in the way of opinion, dude.

Literally anyone that calls out he Glock 19, probably the most prolific modern handgun in the world at this point--the modern Cz75 / Browning Hi-Power--as unsuitable for a new shooter should probably check themselves.

If I had to have one handgun, and only one, it would be a Glock 19. Twice on Sundays.

Consistent trigger pull, accurate, bombproof reliability, magazines everywhere you look, Pmags, ETS extended mags, holsters of every possible shape / size, spare parts that are cheap and abundant, as may different variations of sights that you could ask for... The case for is powerful.

OP, go forth and get a Glock 19 and be done with it. Spend the rest of your worry and money on ammo and range time.

Alright, the Glock 19 is great. The issue with most forums is that the never ending consensus is that the only gun to ever buy is the Glock 19 and nothing else. Ever. The Glock 19 is the best and everything else is obsolete in comparison.

That's the issue with the common Glock-a-holic.

There is the VP9, SIG P320, and even some other random manufacturers like Canik that are producing guns that are exactly up to par with and sometimes exceeding the Glock 19.

It's not the always the "end of discussion" pistol to be mentioned.

Options to look at others are very helpful.

The Glock 19 is a fine pistol, but it's certainly not the only option - as has been mentioned.

I like DA/SA pistols a lot. I do own and enjoy the Glock 19, but probably my favorite 9mm CCW gun is the HK P2000. Ergonomics are excellent. It's a smidge smaller than the G19, but still a full grip. Sure, it's a 13rd mag instead of 15, but that's negligible. Plus it also accepts the 15rd P30/VP9 mags and their 30+ rd brothers.

They are also currently available at $549, which is the same price most places are charging for Gen4 G19.

Had an ND in my 586 357 practicing for IDPA,Was alone up North in my trailer
5 caps and one live. 5 clicks and a Bang.
Scared the be-jesus out of me and my ears rang for 3 days. I so embarrassed did'nt tell anyone for years, It made a lasting impression on me.

I had a negligent discharge a few years back in my apartment with my GP100. Shooting Double Tap ammo 125 grain loads. Ungodly loud, but luckily I had earbuds in and I think that saved my hearing for sure.

Some shooters find the Glock to be unweidly and "block like" if you will.

I find the Glock 19 to be somewhat "block-like" but not unwieldy at all.

It is light, compact, and quite handy, considering the firepower on tap. The ergonomics don't feel the best in hand, but I shoot the pistol quite well, which is what ultimately matters.

When the questions is, "should [anyone] buy a Glock 19?", the answer is an emphatic yes, do it and be done with it.

Newbies, experienced, whoever. If they were asking, "what else should I buy?" there's a (not so) short list of great alternatives (PPQ, P99, P2000, P30, P229, P228, P320, SP2022, P07, P01...). That was not the question asked.

I am strongly against the 'for a novice' buy. Buy the right kit the first time, and train with it.

I love these threads, its like a 9mm vs 45 thing.

Should he get a 19 for CCW, yes a good choice for a reason some seem to miss. The glock is like a chubby wife, might not be sexy but is dead reliable. The reliable part is what makes a CCW for me. I see all the guys with the "hey just got a _______ for 200 bucks and its a GREAT CCW gun" Yeah, ok, if it works for you when you need it to that is great. I will balk at the IF in that statement.

Triggers.
Guns don't go off unless you pull the trigger. Learn that, repeat that and keep your finger off the damn trigger unless YOU want to fire it. LONNNNNNG heavy DAO for CCW if it makes you warm and fuzzy go for it but I will go back to don't pull the trigger unless you want it to go off. If that concept is a problem then practice can help figure it out.

My 75 year old mother wanted to start shooting. I got her a G17 and some snap caps. After "playing with it" and range time with me I got her bullets for it. I have no issue with her as a "newbie" with a glock. She learned how to use it.

In the nature of disclosure I carry a G19 M-F at work. I hate it but I carry it BECAUSE it is dead reliable and it is what I consider a cheap handgun. It lives a rough life where I don't want to trash a Sig. I carry a Sig if I am not at work.
