It does hold up well. I like the older "frying pan" finish the best. I have one that has the NiB-X treatment and in terms of wear that is basically none, but I find it develops a sort of patina like nickel jewelry would.
For me I like how flat the frame is around the slide. The slide stops are minimal and it really lets me get my support hand up against the frame.
I had a sort of bizarre discussion with a gentleman online the other day that was angered by the 17M and considered it a cheapening of the design because of the traditional rifling and lack of finger grooves . Glock gave the FBI what they wanted in terms of those changes, something many people wouldn't have bet on Glock being willing to do. I've said in the past that the ability to use the same magazines, same holsters, and not need to retrain the armorers and agents extensively makes this a government purchase that is, imo, logical. The Glocks can be made here as well. I see it as a win for both the FBI and the taxpayer.
