Give me the good, bad or ugly on Taurus

I'm considering a Taurus model 66. What are your opinions on Taurus revolvers in general? Give me the real dirt. If you don't like them, be sure to explain why. All comments will be appreciated.

Oh boy, you're going to get an ear full with this thread. Personally I like Taurus revolvers, all of them that I've owned or used have been good tools. The most recent one I've played around with was their big (non Raging Bull) 44 magnum. It had one minor problem with the ejector rod losening up but as long as it was tight the revolver functioned perfectly. The 2 M85 snubby's I've owned have been flawless performers. A friends dad has a Taurus M65, the fixed sight version of the 66. He hasn't put a lot of rounds through it, only a few hundred, but it's been great so far.

From the number of posts about problems with various Taurus revolvers it does seem that Taurus might produce more lemons than some other manufacturers, but as long as you can examine the one you want to buy before paying for it you should be able to avoid most problems.

I'd buy one without hesitation.

(...and six years ago, my answer would have been very different. They've come a long way, baby. :) )

I too am a big Taurus fan. I have a couple of their wheelguns which have performed perfectly 100% of the time. I am also getting very close to buying a 454 Raging Bull just for grins.... :)

I will not buy because...

I have owned three or four in the past few years, the last one would jam if you pulled the trigger part way, and released. This was a NEW gun. I opened it up and was really supprised at the "monkey motion" works they had inside, I repaired by filing a burr off of one part and buttoned it back up, and headed to my least favorite gun shop to trade for an older S&W..
..Another thing, the screws hardly have any threads in the frame for the side plate screws. :( Different strokes for different folks.....

I have 2 now and am looking at getting a 3rd. (Raging Bull) I have owned a couple of S&W model wheel guns. I just like the performance I have experienced with the Taurus. Plus, you cant beat the warranty.

I have three Taurus revolvers, a Model 66, Model 605 and Model 85. All have been excellent firearms. I highly recommend Taurus.

Had a Model 85 .38 snub, was a good gun & I would buy another if that is what I was looking for (sold it to a friend to buy a Colt Mustang Pocketlite).

Bought a 940 .40 caliber when Taurus came out & stood fast against the Agreement that the traitor S&W signed, didn't really need it but wanted to show support. Turned out to be one of the most accurate semi-auto pistols I shoot, and has operated flawlessly.

I'd buy another Taurus without reservation, due to the quality of their product & the fact that they didn't cave when S&W did.

I sure am sick of hearing about smith and wesson selling out, granted I may not be a lawyer but I cannot see where anything in that agreement, really changes anything, seems like everyone is making a big deal out of nothing ,I know I will probibly get my ass kicked for this but I will still buy a smith product before I buy a cheap knock off like taurus or rossi.would someone explain what in that agreement is so serious,I realize it was a public relations mistake but I think they are under alot of legal pressure, just like the tobacco companys and by boycotting them we are playing right into those liberal bastards hands, once smith is backrupt they will work there way down the line, ruger will be next ,then the smaller companys like taurus,I cannot even find a gun shop in my area anymore ,five years ago there were three within a 30 mile radius, now the mom and pop stores are all gone, makes me sick

If you get sick hearing about the agreement, you ought to try reading it.

And if you think it's fine that they are trying to make sure I can't walk into a gunshop and buy an AR-15, you need your ass kicked.

I say this with all due respect, of course.

As for the Taurus line in general,They make a good quality revolver at a reasonable price. I'm not too hip on them porting so many models, but the ones I have purchased have been nice guns.

Taurus:

1) .22 revolver, model 94 I think, had problems with rear sight...

2) model 85 snub; very nice gun....

3) model 445, 44 spec. snub........broken firing pin spring, happened twice...

Maybe your dealer will lend you some snap caps and let you dry fire before you buy..hopefully nothing
'll break......

Just the OUTWARD APPEARANCE

From what I am reading, I feel the outward appearance maybe all these guns are being judged by. The insides of the small framed Taurus is terrible, by my standards, I'll go the extra bucks and buy the real thing ! :D
...... I buy only used guns ...... and cars.

Two revolvers on my "must have" list are made by Taurus. I think you will be happy if you purchase one.

rhedley may have a valid point. I have removed the sideplates on all my revolvers at one time or another. Lots of parts. What makes one set of internals superior to a different design is totally beyond my realm of experience.

Taurus does have a lifetime warranty on all their firearms. That's impressive, although nobody really wants to have to use their warranty.

redneck5, please don't feel that my previous post is an attack on you. I just think you need to realize what will happen when someone decides to enforce the unmentionable document. For one thing, the added expense of doing business under the terms of the agreement will drive more small shops out of business. Shoot safe, and buy used Smiths.;)

ar-10 I realize the signing of this agreement is not a good thing, but my point is ,how many lawsuits were pending when the clintonista goverment strongarmed smith and wessen into signing this agreement.

Although I have limited experience with Taurus revolvers as a group, I can fully recommend the model 66. I have a lot of experience with the 7-shot 66 and like it very much.

Taurus roundguns...

I presently own (and occasionally carry) a Taurus 431, which is a blue steel 4" 5-shot .44 Special revolver. That model was discontinued by Taurus and a local gun store had them for sale for $149. I couldn't pass it up.

I took it to a local 'smith, who smoothed it up and removed the SA notch for me (I do this to all my revolvers). Then I put a set of factory rubber grips on the gun. It works very well. I've never had a problem with it.

You should understand that the trigger and cylinder mechanisms in Taurus revolvers are very different from the equivalent S&W, being based on coil spring, rather than leaf spring, operation. The Taurus revolvers will NEVER have as nice a trigger pull as the S&Ws, even if they're tuned-BUT they can be had for not much money and they're a good product. If my Taurus was junk, I wouldn't trust my life to it, but I sometimes do.
