Give an LEO a Hug Today...

While my reply probably doesn't belong here, here goes.

It's common knowledge that abuses of power occur in every place of employement in our world. That's the way it is.

I happen to know a County Attorney, who's husband was busted for possesion of marijuana several years back. Yes, the officers did their job, and arrested him, and seized the evidence.
What's interesting about the case, was that the charges (i.e. paperwork) was apparently lost, and when finally found, the evidence was somehow misplaced. Net result was the case was dropped in the interests of Justice.

Now, it should seem relatively clear that at least a few officers were willing to do their job, even bucking the administration to do that. Hell of a lot of guts there!!!
Now, whatever happened to the rest of the case, can only be poison those officers' work.

Somehow the system failed them, it failed all of us. I would like to think that there was an internal problem in that PD, but it didn't affect all the officers there.

I also remember when the County Sheriff caught me and a girlfriend with a case of beer, getting ready for the starting bell :)!
He was going to dump the beer, and let us go, but his younger partner forced the issue, and we, rather I was arrested. The girl was taken home.
Oh well, that's life you know. Who knows what we would have procreated that night.

Best Regards,
Don

The most foolish mistake we could make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms; history shows that all conquerers who have allowed their subjected people to carry arms have prepared their own fall.

All this LEO bashing kinka reminds me of returning from Nam in the 60's....all us was treated like crap, just the way some of the posters on this thread are treating LEO's.
Most of us Nam vet's did not deserve the treatment we received and IMNSHO most of the LEO's don't deserve being trashed either.
If you have a problem with LEO's...maybe you should step back and take a hard look at yourself.....maybe that's the REAL problem.

RANT mode OFF. :(

Do the police like the people that police them? Do they like all the rules that they are subjected to?

Where are the hugs for Internal Affairs, the ACLU, civillian review boards, the FBI, the Chiefs, etc.?

...something that someone mentioned after all the wildfires in Florida year before last - it was in regards to firefighters, but could apply equally to LEOs and anyone else who is a "first responder." If you really want to show your appreciation, pull over like you're supposed to so they can get by you nitwit! Don't see this as much with police cruisers, but there's not a week goes by I don't see a fire engine, ambulance, or rescue vehicle trying to get through traffic...

In case someone else already said this and I missed it, sorry. But please separate the local LEO's from the feds.(ATF & FBI) These last two deserve no respect from me. I know there MIGHT be one or two good ones, but so far I have not heard of any.

I will now commence to foaming at the mouth.
What you all seem to miss is that it is MORE than just a job. It is a duty shouldered by those who refuse to see society destroyed by people who can't control themselves. A belief in society, and a willingness to do what no-one else will because it HAS to be done.
No, I don't make enough. My loans from law school eat up most of what I would use to buy a newer car, live in a safer neighborhood (like I could ever afford a house!), impress pretty girls. I chose to sacrifice part of myself for the greater good.
Why did I take the job? Because I had a run-in with a sh**bird cop in college, and I believed that it was a job too important to leave to the dregs of society. I put my money where my mouth was. Anyone who has a problem with LEOs or the way the job is done should do the same. Just because I have a strong belief in service to society (ala the Heinlein everyone wants to quote)doesn't mean that my pay doesn't matter. If anyone wants to complain about LEOs asking for respect and fair compensation, then THEY should do the job. OK, I'm done foaming at the mouth.

Ok, Hug.
Feel better now?
Just remember, while we are hugging. My hand is awfully close to your gun. Think about it, OK?
I repeat, stay safe,,,,everybody.

Since becoming a lawyer and practicing in the bankrupcty area, I have consistently dealt with the "underclass", and therefore have an understanding of the unappreciative idiotic low-rent folks LEOs risk their lives for. I have become hardened by endless "tales of woe" by clients who would screw me over at the first opportunity if given a chance. However, I don't hate the underclass as many LEOs and prosecutors seem to, because I can see the direct connection between them and my paycheck. LEOs however, are supported by the taxpayers, a more tenuous connection, and much more stable source of income, paid for by all citizens, good and bad, so I can see why they might become cynical. That is indeed a very bad week. But hey, ALL jobs suck. ALL jobs are repetitive. All jobs are stressful. That is the nature of jobs. Some are more stressful than others, and LEOs stress level is high, but to make that an excuse for poor performance is a complete cop-out, so to speak. There are multitudes of jobs equally or more stressful, though perhaps in different ways, than an LEO's job.

Oh, and Nyterunner, I respect what you've done for your cause of making the world a better place. It's admirable, truly. But first off, if you choose to be a martyr of sorts then that's your choice. There's a bazillion problems in this world and anyone can pick one up as their cause if they wish, but they must accept the trade-off consequences, and part of the trade-off in being an LEO is getting little respect (at least far less than in the past, for better or worse - just a fact), becoming a bullet magnet, etc. If I go join the peace corps and live in squalor in a third world country, then I've done a similar thing as YOUR choice to become an LEO. Next, there are fringe benefits to being a cop. First, there's the satisfaction you and some others seem to get from the job. How many hundreds of times have I seen an LEO on "COPS" the TV show talk about how awesome their job is. Dozens, let me tell you. I get approximately zilch satisfaction from my job. The reason they're "underpaid" is because of the main fringe benefit making up for that pay - POWER in society AND respect by some - a large portion of law-abiding society - of course you don't deal with that type daily. You know exactly what I mean, too, when I say you wield power in society. Plus, cops around here make a more money than I do. They moonlight for $20-$30 an hour for sitting on their ass (security) all they can possibly want, using the CITY's (!!) uniform and patrol car in the process. They get all the free gasoline they want along with the car. Believe me, many lawyers are sucking major eggs financially, and I'd much rather have the benefits package of an LEO (at least at this point in my life). Yes, hug a cop. And hug me, too please. Actually, as you may have figured, I have an incessant fear of intimacy and shun intimate advances at all costs, whether platonic or romantic - why do think I'm such an ass?

And Svt, c'mon now - You know that there's no work being done from 1-3pm, when the ol' lunch is settling in. ;)

You know it seems that the majority of non LEO's are missing the point. I bi ur mean complain about my pay as I'm sure everyone does. I also work tose off duty "security" jobs that were mentioned to support my habit, oh the new wonder gun has arrived. I have never complained about the monotony of my job though. I would gladly welcome the unemployment line if the need for LEO's were to go away today. As far as feeling a need to justify my choice of jobs, the three people that have a direct influence over my choice understand. They also know that sometimes it's best to not ask... I believe that the original intent of this post was sincere and much appreciated. As I stated above I would probably do my job for less money. As far as complaining about the people that police us(LEO's), I dont have a problem with them, be professional and no LEO should. I do wish that I had as many "rights" as the people I arrest. But thats why we have to be above reproach. Remember in all dealing with a LEO that we are people also, we have bad days, get sick and all that normal stuff. I try to remember that in my dealings with people also. But also remember that baseball game(or whatever)that junior pitched the no hitter in, well I missed it because I making sure that your neighborhood was safe. Not a bitch just fact. Stay Safe....

Oh and I couldnt sit at a desk and work 8 to 5 monday through friday......
