Giuliani on Gun control ...

Worm, you and I need to play a little game here. Try this: you name a Republican (Governor, US Senate or House) who is anti-gun, then I'll name a Democrat who is so inclined. We'll see who gives up first.

Okay lets start with Trent Lott. Antigun who wrote most the antigun laws in the senate for the past 6-7 years.

Then there is his partner in crime Orrin Hatch.

Larry Craig help draft antigun law with Trent Lott too, including alot more ways to have your gunrights removed.

Gordon Smith, wrote laws with James Jeffords both Republican senators to restrict sales of firearms

Oh and we shouldn't forget the President and Vice President either with their obsession of banning firearms without a clear hunting purpose, support of renewing the awb and the ban of imports of barrels on military rifle part kits.

Plenty of others but I will have to get back since its time for valentine's day dinner.

You go first.
Well, nearly ever Republican from Illinois voted for the trigger locks and mandatory background checks. I don't know if that counts as anti-gun though. I picked the state I live in, which one should I pick next?

What a politician promises doesn't matter as much as what a politician does.

This exercise will be interesting, and maybe educational.

Will you please show me some of the most extreme "antigun laws" Lott authored.

Meanwhile, here are some examples of his support on 2A issues:

--- Lott opposed, a 1999 amendment by Dianne Feinstein to ban the import of magazines manufactured before 1994 which hold more than 10 rounds

--Against a Charles Schumer amendment to prevent gun makers victimized by abusive lawsuits from declaring bankruptcy.

--Against extreme restrictions on gun shows which would allow federal regulators to ban them entirely.

--Against an amendment by Charles Schumer to restrict firearms sales over the Internet

--Against a Lautenberg proposal to impose special restrictions on gun shows.

Many, many more examples on request.

Orrin Hatch on 2A issues:

--"The assault weapons ban is a measure entirely devoid of rational thought....This amendment addresses neither the problem nor the solution, when it comes to gun crime.....I strongly oppose the Amendment."

--introduced S. 1414 to repeal the DC's ban on handguns and lift prohibitions on the possession or carrying of weapons at homes and workplaces

Larry Craig is on the board of the NRA. Anti-gun? I don't think so.

Jim Jeffords on 2A issues:

--Voted NO on background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)

--Voted YES on more penalties for gun & drug violations. (May 1999)

--Voted YES on loosening license & background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)

--Voted YES on maintaining current law: guns sold without trigger locks. (Jul 1998)

Gordon Smith...............maybe, however he is rated B by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record.

Here is my first list of anti-2A Democrats; feel free to provide examples of their support FOR gun rights as I have done with your list:

Nancy Peolsi, Dianne Feinstein, Charles Schumer, Patty Murray, Frank Lautenberg

Our two-party political system is so broke-down and riddled with corrupt power-mongers that we are rarely presented with good leaders as candidates. I'm afraid the current crop of presidential wanna-bees will not offer much more come election day. Rudy is merely a lesser evil than some, a greater evil than others. I doubt I would vote for him under any circumstances... even as a "no" vote to his opponent... whoever she may be... :barf:

That said... gun rights is an important, core issue for me. Rudy is clearly on the wrong side of that issue... but so are most (all?) democrats... and plenty of republicans too. Unfortunately, the one party with a consistent gun rights platform is relegated to the third-party fringe... by both the powers-that-be... and the voters. Voting is more of a strategy than a choice these days.

As for Rudy's puffery about "he" being responsible for the drop in crime rates... pheh. The rogue economist Steven D. Levitt, in his book (along with co-author Stephen J. Dubner) "Freakonomics", makes a very strong case for the cause in the drop in crime rates in MANY cities across the country during the '90's... and it wasn't gun control... it was... abortion! We simply reduced the population of potential criminals who would have come of age during the 90's. Whether you agree or disagree, the book is a great read... and many of their unusual and unexpected theories on a variety of subjects are very well presented!

Finally... with regard to gun control and crime rates... check out "More Guns Less Crime" by John R. Lott, Jr. Another example of a qualified author on a particular subject making a reasoned and fact-supported argument.

No... even if you could argue crime in NYC dropped (it may have in some, but not all areas)... who... or what... was responsible? Rudy? So what then did Rudy really do? Better to look at what he is trying to do now... attempting to take credit for something that is not entirely true and probably not his doing. Moron.

I would say that passing laws does not make major reductions in crime. Targeting the problem with law enforcement assets and active prosecutions do. Politicians would have us beleive that a law is like a magic wand and a fairy godmother who take care of the problem. if you dont have the assets to arrest and prosecute chances are the law will be inneffective. If Mayor Bloomberg would put the money and assets into arresting criminals for firearm violations instead of investigating gunshop owners whom the BATF has declined to prosecute he might go a ways towards solving his problem.

Gun Laws Cut NY Deaths?

If Giuliani really believes gun control cut the number of homicides in NY by 65-70% then he's not counting all the killings, just the ones that serves his political needs. Has he already forgotten the other 3000 souls murdered in the towers? I can hear people out there thinking," But they weren't shot". Guess that's what Giuliani would want us to hear. And if a few aboard the planes had been armed, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in today. Gun control leads to more control. To say anything works because it kills "less" people, isn't rational. Washington D.C. has strict gun controls. But during the height of the war between England and the IRA, Washington D.C. had a higher yearly death toll. I hope the USA is worth more than the paper it was built from.

Guns do not commit crimes. This is just another grand standing politician with too much to say and too little to do. Remember, this "hero of 9-11" did nothing about the huge number of illegal aliens living in the NY city area before, during, or after 9-11. This anti gun "crime fighter" is nothing but a fake. Ever wonder how many armed body guards this "anti gun" crusader has protecting his rear?

been wondering that myself. Does anyone know how many guns protect him? and how many of them would be protected after his bans are in place?
