Getting out of the semi automatic game!!

Okay, I gave my son in law my Xdm 9mm pistol. I have a buyer for my Glock 26. Once that transaction is done, I will be auto free except for my P22 Walther which doesn't get shot much.

I still have a bit of 9mm rounds so I am thinking about a Ruger LCR 9mm. Any thoughts on this?

I also want a .22LR revolver for plinking purposes. Would the Ruger LCR .22LR revolver or the Ruger SP101 .22LR revolver be the better purchase?

I don't want to screw this up so am asking for comments.

Why get rid of a perfectly good auto just to get a revolver chambered in a cartridge that was never intended to be chambered in a revolver?
If you want a new wheel gun for the sake of having one why not get a 357 Magnum. In the LCR it is the same gun they use for the 9mms without the added inconvenience of moon clips. Plus it offers the platform for a much more powerful cartridge in the magnum while still being able to use mild 38 Special for practice, and plinking.

Folks that plow forward with extreme confidence that they KNOW what certainly must be the "right" decision for the balance of time do a most excellent job of keeping the used gun market full and fluffy for the rest of us who refuse to subscribe to such seemingly energetic endeavors.

This group inudes the "I'm getting out of X caliber guns" and "I want to streamline my calibers to only .357" and "all these S&W have to go, I will only own Ruger from now on!"

I love it!
I fully support this behavior!
I also plan to gain from it, generally speaking.

For a plinking 22lr revolver, between the two you mentioned, I would opt for the SP101. Better overall firearm and will retain value much better than a LCR. Also, you'll want the hammer spur for plinking, nothing beats single action for those accurate shots and the LCR is double-action-only.

That said, You can look into other 22lr revolvers for plinking.

If you want to stay with Ruger, don't overlook some of their single action revolvers. The single-ten, single-nine and single-six (they also offer a convertable 22lr/22wmr single-six).

If you wanted to stay in a snubnose platform, but would like a hammer spur, you can look into a Charter Arms Pathfinder or a Taurus 94 (taurus also has larger barrel 22lrs to choose from as well).

Smith and wesson has several options as well. They will most likely be the most expensive of the bunch, but they are nice.

As for your request on the 9mm LCR...

What is this going to be used for? a carry gun, home defense? or just going to the range?

If anythiong but a carry gun, then I wouldn't even consider it. I really don't like the whole moon-clip requirment for a revolver anyway. If I was looking for a 9mm revolver, I would try to find one that doesn't need a moonclip at all.

Something like the Charter Arms Pitbull 9mm. No moonclips required.

If it will be for range or home defense/nightstand gun.. do yourself a favor and get a bigger gun. One possible in .357 and sell off your old 9mm stockpile.

PS, I chuckled at your name... I guess forever isn't as long as it used to be ;)

Why????

Why????

Why????

I can understand the XD, but the Glock????

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the Glock 26 and add a Glock 19 and a few more 17 magazines?

If you MUST go to a revolver, why not a pre-lock pre-MIM S&W???

Like gold, they are.

Convertible Blackhawk? 9mm, 38, and .357. Lets you change your mind without having to change your gun. Also, fun shooting gun and single action revolvers are good at keeping ammo costs down since you can't blow through buckets of ammo quite so quickly.

I'd lean towards the SP101 for the .22 personally- the longer barrel gives you the capability of pushing your range a bit and the overall design (sights, grip, etc) comes together for admirable accuracy. I do agree the trigger pull is a bit heavy in double action, but then again you can get used to dramatically pulling the hammer back like you're the bad cowboy in a crappy western, so there's that. LCR is an awesome gun, but I feel like all that technology in the grip is wasted in the .22 and I think that particular gun shines as a carry gun more than a plinker.

If you MUST go to a revolver, why not a pre-lock pre-MIM S&W???

Just saw a 686, no dash, 2 1/2 for sale... while they want $699, the pawn shop might go down some. Locks tight and action is fine. Not shot much.

I know it's heavy, but that in a strong side ccw holster will do for a winter gun!

Yea I pack a Glock, but I'm well known for liking S&W older revolvers.

Not all, and all not for long I am sure!
LCRx exposed hammer SA/DA.......now available in 38 Spcl
LCR 3" exposed hammer SA/DA with a longer barrel....now available in 38 Spcl.
I'm sure an LCRx, and LCRx 3" in nine round rimfire versions are not far away.

9mm LCRx whener they come available. if not, Taurus 905 is second option.

this from Ruger forum
Ok, so I emailed Mike Fifer @ Tell the CEO, and got a reply .

Me: "I hate to beg....
But please make the 3" LCRx adjustable sight in 22LR. Please!"

Mike: "okay; we’ll do it."

Man I can't wait to get one! I think it will be the best packing pistol for woods plinking ever made! Wish I could get one yesterday!

Thanks Mike

there ya go, for the .22 I would hold out for the LCRx

The simplest answer is that if you buy a Smith or a Colt at a fair price you will never lose any money on the gun. Rugers, not so much in the way appreciation. Rugers are good.

I admit to being a Smith fan. If you get a chance to pick up a model 17 at fair price I doubt you would ever regret it. Great plinkers with great single action triggers. Watch some YouTube videos about 22 revolvers.

That is just my opinion.

I went revolver only for a couple years, when I had to sell off everything except a model 10 and a 442 during a lean time. Cheapest to shoot and reload for. Now that I can afford more toys I'm glad I put the time in mastering the DA trigger.

LCRX 22 On the way? Bah... I wish.
I'm still waiting for the GP100 22. And we all saw pictures of it. We all have to wait. Hmm let's make more single stack 9s instead. Gen 7 with interchangeable strawberry scented grip panels, for the custom guys.
At least I'm handling it well.

OP,
Please tell me that you have a bunch of revolvers and you're just getting rid of the last of your semi-autos? Because that's the only condition under which I would recommend going with a 9mm revolver.
No one buys their first revolver in 9x19. It just ain't natural. Unless you have a DHS-worth of 9mm at home, buying one because you own some ammo is just not a good idea..
Here's a recommendation. Try to hold on to at least one semi-auto so when you realize that shooting only revolvers is not completely fulfilling, you won't have to start all over again (and change your username).
Then buy a .38/.357 4"-6" revolver. I'd go with a S&W 686 (or a 686+ or even a 627). Pre-lock or with lock really doesn't matter. You could also get a Ruger (a 100 or 101). Try to find one used if that will help you hold on to the Glock.
I really really like DA/SA revolvers, but I would not recommend you get rid of all of your semi-autos. You'll find it to be a temporary and thus ultimately expensive decision. And I would not recommend starting your revolver collection with a 9mm.
Oh and the S&W 617 is a very sweet .22LR.

Okay, let's discuss this.

I only got rid of the Xdm because the son in law chose it. I loved the Xdm. The Glock and I have never truly bonded. I guess I am just not a Glock guy.

I have currently a very nice GP-100 4" in .38/.357 that is a wonderful gun. I absolutely love it. It is my bedroom drawer gun. I also have a J frame 642 that is a PC gun that is a great carry gun.

I never carried the Glock so getting rid of it is a no brainer. I have about 1000 rounds of 9mm that are in the closet. I was thinking about a 9mm revolver so as to be able to use that ammo.

I like the idea of a S&W 686, but I have that covered with the GP-100.

I am finding that as I become older, I prefer revolvers. I do not think I am an idiot to feel this way. I was asking for opinions on the three revolvers I mentioned in the original post. I am aware of the volatility of the idea of the LCR 9mm. Many of you have no need or want of a 9mm revolver. I understand that, however, that doesn't mean that everybody should feel the same.

With the idea of the .22LR revolvers, I am wanting something besides the P22 I already own. I want something that will shoot all .22 ammo with no problems. The Walther P22 is VERY picky on ammo. It needs the CCI mini mags or other high velocity ammo to cycle reliably. I like the idea of the SP 101 since it can be shot single action as well as double action. That looks like a win win over the single 10, and single 9.

Also, since I no longer own an XD, how do I change my screen name?

Just my thoughts,
Joe

For a pistol in 9mm luger the CZ75 is hard to beat.
There are some fun older revolvers in 22lr. The colt officers target model, the s&w k22 masterpiece target model and the H&R revolvers too. I like the classic older 22 guns.
