Getting Organized for Handgun Self Defense

George....
Thank you for backing me up here. In my line of work (personal security), we have to abide by our "use of force continuum policy."
In the state of Texas, before you shoot someone, you had better be sure that your life or the clients life was on the line before you decide to take someones life. If someone comes at me and I feel that my life is threatened, don't get me wrong, I will resort to anything necessary to take him out.
But if he continues to argue, doesn't obey verbal commands, soft/hard hand control is resisted, I will resort to OC. OC is not an option when my life is on the line. But in order to keep my tail out of jail, I must follow the guidelines. OC spray doesn't always work, but if it is utilized in a non-life threatening manner, or an ASP for that matter, to subdue the suspect, it fails to work for whatever reason, and the situation escalates, atleast I will be justified in my actions. If I skip that level of force and jump directly to deadly force, I have a serious battle ahead of me. My $.02.

I believe that an intermediary force weapon like OC should definitely be carried when your able. Some folks still confuse it with Mace, which does have a spotty track record of effectiveness. In basic training, we were all forced to remove our chemical masks inside a room permeated with Mace. Nearly all made it out w/o being rendered helpless or unable to fight.
The OC does at least two things that mace does not. Involutary swelling of the mucous membranes, which constricts breathing, and closure of the eyelids. An assailant who's gasping and blinded is now far less of a threat to your well being. It does wear off after 30-90 minutes. I think it's far easier to defend its use than oven cleaner, which is known to cause permanent blindness! Remember, you should not be resorting to it if a lethal level of force(gun)is what is really needed.
Cell phones can be had so cheaply, even at the Circle K's & 7-11's, there is no excuse to be w/o one. My $.02 :)
