Getting old and still reloading

I guess we're all about the same age. I'm just now 69. I still teach tennis to high school kids and can still play some of them even up. But lord it hurts the next day. Right now I hurt in a lot of places. I meant to take an Advil, but forgot.

I'm still doing the ranch work - chain sawing, bush hogging pasture, fixing fence, and such as that, but it takes a toll on me these days.

Got to look at the bright side. I'm still somewhat active and still have a pulse. My old friends are sure looking old these days. And a buddy I played HS football with just passed away. I saw him a couple months ago at a wedding, and he said he'd had 14 heart surgeries. This is a guy that, at 17, was chiseled out of granite. Ran the 440 under 50 seconds, was a tough linebacker, and a good fullback. So, if you aren't dead, you are doing Ok.

Advil...right now.

My only observation has been my patience and tolerance of some people is not quite what it once was. Actually it was more of a wife observation. I will be 67 in February and so far, so good. My doctor seems happy with me anyway for what that is worth. I am starting to really dislike the NE Ohio winters only because they cramp my outdoor range time. Yeah getting old is tough but it beats the alternative and I do like ice cream and TV, especially butter pecan ice cream. :)

I will get up and work until Im dead, then I still have half a dozen things to do!
My dear old departed grandmother used to say:
"Don't worry about it. When you die, your "In Box" will not be empty."

I think she had a point. She died at age 76 from liver cancer. I'm 61 now and finally beginning to understand her wisdom. Guess I'm a bit of a slow learner.... :o

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
So much time is spent;
So little time left.
Make the last few good years count.
Take a grandchild camping and fishing.

I'm startin' to get up there.

I can't see up close (normal age related presbyopia); which is okay at the loading bench because I should be wearing glasses for safety anyway.

But at the range is a different story. I haven't shot since late July because I'm having my shooting glasses altered (stronger prescription) so I can see my front sight more clearly. I have a "reverse bifocal" - where the correction is on the top; rather than the bottom. And it's on my dominant eye only. Pretty cool. But cool does no good when the optometrist has them. There have been delaying complications - long story. I'm frustrated right now.

And I shake a bit - which I didn't back when I was young.

And I'm not as strong - which adds to the shaking.

And I'm not as patient - but still short of crotchity.

And I forget stuff.

And I still shoot better now than ever. Because what age has taken from me; I more than make up for in experience - for now. Father time will eventually prevail. I know.

And I'm still happy. I accept the aging process. Some days better than others ;)

I'm a tad younger and no tennis or ranch work. Besides that i'm you and you're me. Most things I get involved with have me feeling like I did battle with 3- 20 year old's and then got hit buy a bus. The bright side, my feet hit the floor and I suck wind, it's a beautiful morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D;)

I'm already old, 71, I still reload and I still shoot. I plan to go down swinging.
Pistols every Wed. AM with the old men, a lil bit of rifle. Then some skeet, trap or 5 stand. My scores aren't what they used to be but I still shoot at them. Never give up! Life is good.

When you get old NEVER STOP RELOADING. Just take it step by step and check:

Select Primer and double check
Seat Primers and check after seating
Select powder and double check
Adjust scale and double check
After throwing the powder, eyeball the loaded cases in the loading tray with a torch and make certain that all levels are the same.
Seat bullets and double check OAL.

If your system is in place you could surely reload until you are 90 years of age.

LOL about the above reference to checking your loaded cases with a TORCH!

Saw the South Africa location... (for "English English"- speakers a flashlight is a torch...) Just in case some of you old codgers (like me) were gonna get out your little hand-held propane to get some light on all your lined-up cases... What a visual image THAT is!

Wow, did I just walk in to the McDonald's on a Sunday morning... LOL. The grey hair club there talks about aches, pains, doctors and medical bills!

That's sad but true. I'll be 60 in a very short time and I will never be seen in McDonalds.

I will get up and work until Im dead, then I still have half a dozen things to do!

I don't have time to get old, I have slowed down but so what. I do the same things I did when I was young, I just don't do them as fast. I'm heading for Devil's hole in the Niagara River in a month to catch 40lb Salmon, and after that I will grab my 41 magnum and go shoot my self a whitetale for my smoker.

I can't see so well either but that just means I have to get a little closer.

Don't ever give up, if you do then get a rocking chair for your front porch and get in it and go ahead and die. I suffer from a lot of ailments like bad knees, pre- cancer, and, well, just getting old, like a lot of us. You just have to find ways to deal with it.

I watched my father die of cancer because he was to embarrassed to get a colonoscopy, I am not. I have no intentions of going down that way.

Slow down, absolutely, Stop? No way. I'll stop when I'm dead.

Make the last few good years count.
Take a grandchild camping and fishing.

That will be as soon as my grandson is old enough to go where I go. About a couple more years. He's coming along very well and I am very proud of him.
I'll find out what he thinks of fresh fish or squirrel that we just caught, cooked over a fire.

He's only 5 but is maturing really fast. He already wants to go to the shooting range with me. Due time, Due time.

Clark, It sucks to get old but it is a part of the life cycle. All you can do is embrace it and make the most out of it, gracefully, AND QUIT LOOKING BACK, you'll only discourage yourself.

I also fish the devils hole but do it from my boat, great salmon fishing there. Some good walleye and small mouth fishing further down the river.

getting on..

I will be 70 at the end of November. I have always enjoyed shooting prone rifle, both smallbore and high power. Getting down into position is easy, the targets lately are good.....getting back up to vertical is the hard part.
Shooting standing....rifles or pistols....i used to be able to stand still. Getting harder to do.

Hang in there guys, I will be 81 this January, still shoot twice a week, mostly pistol now these days.
I shoot steel plate challenge at our range and teach reloading also.
I shoot around 6,000 rounds a year and being in the reloading room in the winter is my happy place.
Lord willing,I hope to be around a few more years.
Peace, Floyd

At the risk of repeating myself,
Get thee to the gym.
Just do what's comfortable, no need to overdo it.
Makes all the difference.

Clark,

As my on-line name implies- I'm no youngster. I'm pushing 70 now. I'm still jumping out of air planes, riding Harleys, hunting, reloading & FISHING with a passion.

I still do some competitive pistol shooting with the Zombie Shooters.

My womanizing days came to a halt years ago when I was seduced by my wife of now over thirty five years.

All I can say is "KEEP ON KEEPING ON"! Don't stop living until they shovel the dirt over you.

I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. And Mama don't complain...

Nearing 70 and the knees don't work like they used to; a bit harder to walk/climb uphill. My shooting stuff gets heavier all the time, need to make a lighter portable shooting bench. Stuff seems to move by itself 'cause it ain't where I put it. But this ain't gonna stop me from playing with my toys. I like reloading and shooting. It keeps my mind active and the body too, but much less. I'll keep burning powder in my Garand and .44 Magnums 'till I be done with this old world...;)

It's been said by some, "got more days behind me than I have in front of me."

Only 62 but have had my heart roto-rooted 3 times in the past 12 months and have already had 3 bypass surgeries done to my legs and will probably soon be looking at number 4. Almost lost the left one before the 1st bypass.

Took up shooting and reloading again to help fill the time. Now I only wish it were easier to get out. The mind is young but the body is old.
