getting a flame or flash out of the end of the barrel ?

You want muzzle flash ???
Try 252 grains of V.V. 20N29 out of a 16" barreled 50BMG rifle.
Shooting at night was an "eye opener" !!!
That barrel has been replaced with a 34" barrel now and I still get muzzle flash.

Sorry - no pics were taken.

am i wrong to suggest that there are other ways to increase combustion efficiency without only increasing length of barrel? like primer strength, haevy crimp to prolong the combustion process, compressed loads etc. i know these don't make a whole ton of difference, but it's something.

Muzzle flash is normally less from unburned powder (unless you've got a lot of slowburning powder leaving a short barrel) and more incandescent powder gas, which forms a plasma.

Some powders are more prone to this, normally the hotter burning powders.

haevy crimp to prolong the combustion process,

R. lee in his book on modern reloading discussed crimping as a means to do just that, to prolong, then he went into bullet hold and release, then there was that other factor.

He claimed it did not take long for the pressure to pass any benefit of the crimp. Me? I want all the bullet hold I can get knowing it does not take long for the pressure to exceed anything I can put on the bullet in the way of a crimp to hold the bullet.
