Get 2 guns.. NOW

I am glad the NRA is doing what it is doing. Will this polarize the issue - yes. Will this divide everyone into two sides - yes.

That is great - it is has been a long time coming.

Let's get this show on the road!! I am tired of waiting around as my rights are stripped away.

Come and get 'em!!!

<sigh>

Okay, these aren't flames, and maybe I'm a little more frustrated than I should be (I really need that second ulcer), but so what if the gun issue is now number one? I really don't understand what you hope to accomplish by hoping that no one takes notice of the gun issue. The anti-self-defense types can drag it out whenever it suits them anyway, with the eager cooperation of the media. If you think it's ugly now, get ready for next month. Tearful, emotion-soaked anniversaries of the Columbine deal, possibly combined with more little punks trying to get their own 15 minutes. Maybe, if we bring it up and make our points NOW, they'll be on record by the time the brouhaha starts next month and we'll be in a better position to deflect the inevitable attacks. Who knows, but you and I will surely take the blame no matter what happens. I agree that a completely rigid stance leads to fracture, but you can only back up so far before you end up in the ocean. We've been trying the "soft" approach for so long now that we don't know how to do anything else for fear of being called extremists. My point is that we are referred to extremists no matter what we do, so do you really propose that we continue the same course as the past 60 or so years? And, why did the Maginot line fail? 'Cause the Germans attacked where the French least expected it. Now, the last thing Clinton expects is to actually be called on his BS publicly, and repeatedly, since no one has ever had the ba**s to do it before. Measure the effectiveness by the hysteria of the response generated. Now is not the time to slink away, tossing slobbering apologies over your shoulder as you go. Even if the guy made a mistake, falling all over himself to apologize only reinforces that impression. It's time to stop feeding the tiger. So, a politician could care less about 4000+ votes. What about the lurkers here? The great thing about the internet is that you can reach more people than you think, even if there is a lot of garbage to wade through. A small example is Oleg's "annoying missionary" work over on the Ms magazine boards. Maybe he din't create new RKBA activists out of whole cloth, but he did give them something to think about. For the record, I agree that La Pierr could have made his points with a little more restraint and level-headedness.

Swinging back to the topic at the last second, why those particular calibers?

Hmmmmm, those were my first two handgun purchases. (I was smarter then, but I'm older now :D )

Semi-autos will be banned before revolvers are. .22's will be the last to be banned. Everybody needs at least one legal gun.

To get more on topic, it's always wise to have 2 guns (pistols) and plenty of ammo.
I do not see the advantage of a .357 over a very simple and plentiful 9mm.
Is the reasoning that you could shoot .38special if they ban .357mag?
If they start banning-they would go for the whole enchilada!
I find more 9mm anymore than .38/.357.
I guess the main idea is to be prepared, and
that means if you want to have guns, get them now.
Two or more of the same calibre, two or more of the same make is practical.
As for the NRA, I don't think they have gone FAR enough!
No matter what reasonable thing they say, it will be twisted and we all will be called
extremists.
What the NRA should do is begin an intense media campaign to remind our out to lunch public of all the crap he has done in office.
Starting with allowing Somilias to drag around the dead bodies of our troops.
Let him defend himself on that!

On topic, I've got the high end covered with my .45 Colt Dakota, at least until I can scrape together the money for that .454 Super Redhawk I'm lusting over. At the low end, I've got a 9MM Calico carbine, and it's well enough balanced to fire from one hand; Does that count?

Off topic, I've got a nasty thought; Were Wayne's remarks aimed at the Presidential election, or at the NRA Director's election which is going on right now? You can question his aim in the former scenario, but if it was the latter election on his mind, his remarks were PERFECTLY suited to appeal to the people who'd normally vote for Wayne's "do not vote for list"!

I for one am glad to see that the NRA has some huevos. I let my membership lapse many years ago because I felt that they were too meally-mouthed and wishy-washy. I was encouraged when Heston became president. I just got a letter form them and now I think that they are on the right track. They are pushing to have "Project Exile" implemented throughout the country. I am sending in my member dues this week. As to the comments that Wayne made, why should they should they apologize for the telling the truth. Keep up the good work, NRA. Let's make Clinton and Gore play hard ball for a change!

The NRA needs more than anything to continue their efforts. They are being taken seriously in their arguments because they are telling the truth, and it is irrefutable that Americans are flocking to gun stores and, hopefully, the NRA. As far as the NRA is concerned, the only bad publicity is an obituary.

As for how many guns to buy, well in California the government has settled it for us: one a month, so that's what I've been doing.

Time for me to do the on-topic/off topic thing.

I've been wanting a S&W 686 in 357 since I shot my friends in September. I only got to shoot 1 rd. through it, cuz he managed to bum 3 rds off some guy shooting 357 next to him (he brought the revolver, but forgot the ammo)

I think a .22 revolver would be fun to have around.

Ok off topic time.

I don't think Wayne should apologize. You should never apologize for speaking your mind. I just thinks that he could have worded it better. The problem with the the NRA is that people percieve it as a organizaiton that will fight all gun control, including reasonable gun control. By reasonable I mean background checks, silly laws requiring the sale of trigger locks with guns. Certain types of licensing. Like in CA, the Basic Firearms Safety Certificate. It's a form of licensing, you take a test and you get a piece of paper that says you passed. And you need it to get handguns in this backwards state. Easiest test I ever took. But it make sure that gun owners know the basics of the law and that they know how to handle firearms safely. I don't have a problem with it. And if I have to endure a waiting period to make the non-gun owning part of the population feel safe, I can deal with it, I'll shoot the my other guns more before the new member of the collection forces me to shoot them less. The NRA is percieved as unwilling to give an inch. They will fight and scream and bitch at the National level, but when Californians were trying to get a special election for SB-23, the NRA wasn't around. Sure local chapters were doing things, but the NRA was more interested in sueing the state once the law passed, and trying to get it ruled unconstituional. And the NRA isn't behind the current propsal by Geoff Metcalf to get a 2nd amendment added to the California Constitution. (Now I'm just ranting so I'll stop)

It ain't mah fault. did I do dat?

My reasoning on the .22 and .357 REVOLVERS is just as insurance against an Australian type ban on ANY semi-auto. .22 cheap and .357 powerful and can handle .38's.

Dat's all I meant. 2 simple guns that MIGHT escape a witch hunt.

Chink,

You might want to reread the first part of your last post. It didn't sound like your friends survived! ;)

Um, I agree that the NRA was conspicuously absent on the SB-23 thing, but I think they need to choose their battles carefully. I know, I'm getting tired of that excuse too, especially given that they've got the money to send me oodles of garbage in the mail every month. However, I think that they are trying to get the SB-23 ruled unconstitutional because then they'll have a precedent they can use later. If they simply blocked it from passing, what's to keep the sponsors of the bill from bringing it up year after year after year? After all, it costs nothing to propose legislation, but it takes a lot of money to fight it, especially given that the antis get all the free media they want. Plus, if it's ruled unconstitutional, they can point to this if other states begin the same nonsense. I don't know if that's their strategy, but I hope it is, rather than just throwing y'all to the wolves. :(

I think that it was about time that SOMEONE, rubbed Klinton's nose in the fact that HE is using the tragity of human suffering, for his political gain. I really do not know what offends me more, when some psycho gets his paws on a firearm and hurts/kills others or when the political jackasses use the the blood of the innocent to score political points. Personally, anyone that does this should be damned.

From what I can tell the NRA has been gaining members ever since they wised up and got away from the appeasment policy. I've been around this list for awhile and everyone says "Where is the NRA?" when something happens, now when the NRA takes a stand, throws down the gauntlet, some of you are turning on them. LaPierre said what we all knew and simply could not say on a national forum. I say, Kick the SOB again, Wayne. Give 'em one for me". Hit the jerks enough times maybe they will be forced to do the unthinkable, debat Chuck Heston or Wayne LaPierre on national TV. Then we will see who is left standing.
The best sterilization is the bright open sunlight.

Hip, hip, hooray for the NRA! They did good!

Oh yeah, .357 got a couple, .22 yup 'em too.
9mm yep, .45 in two flavors ACP and Colt, .40 good to the last round and .357SIG lets the neighbors know you won.;-)

Remember Clinton got on this anti-gun kick once before in his first term . The press and democrats and other liberals jumped on the band wagon and started believing their own BS about how mainstream America felt about guns. The result in 1994 was democrats swept from office and republicans took the congress.Only wise men learn from their mistakes and Clinton doesn't fall into that column. I think we are about to see history repeat itself.
