According to the text of HB 731, the bill focuses on ” dangerous instrumentalities and practices” by prohibiting the “possession, sale, transport, distribution, or use of certain assault weapons, large capacity magazines, armor-piercing bullets, and incendiary .50 caliber bullets.” Moreover, the details punishment for crimes involving “the possession, sale, transport, distribution, or use of certain assault weapons, large capacity magazines, armor-piercing bullets, and incendiary .50 caliber bullets.”

It also “[designates] certain weaponry and ammunition as contraband and [requires] seizure of such by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.”

Yeah, um. No.

There is no way this is passing in the state legislature. The last time a much less loathsome assault-weapons ban was proposed, it never made it past committee.

Still, it's going to get attention and people will be writing in about it. If you're in Georgia, this would be an opportunity to check your representative's stance. If you're outside the perimeter, chances are he opposes it. If so, fire off a nice email thanking him.

Just remember, this is probably not going anywhere this time around, but this is the goal of the 'common sense gun laws' crowd.

They do want your guns.

When President Obama or anyone else in elected office says otherwise, they are lying to your face.

Vote them out of office.

Wow , criminy chistmas and Christ on a crutch. This will likely get shot down the first time around , however it will get re-introduced time and again. Of more concern is that it sets a template for other politicos to introduce similar legislation in other locales.

And of course it will set off yet another buying panic. In all likelihood we'll live to see the total the American public completely disarmed in the end , the old saw that " when guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns" will become truth , the corollary being that many folks will only be " outlaws " because they fail to give up their firearms.

The local CBS affiliate ran a two hour special last night called Gun Fight leading into the State of the Union Address. The event featured a number of people in a live setting where the moderators asked various questions. The event was co-hosted by GPTV the local public television station. I didn’t watch the entire two hours, but the parts I saw were sort of positive. The best part was when the moderator asked a woman whose son was shot in the back of the head for “disrespecting” someone what she thought of guns. She looked surprised at first and then admitted that she had a Weapons License and kept a gun to defend her family. Somehow I think he was expecting different response.

Yes, I agree we have little to worry about from this year’s legislative session and may even see some positive movement in Georgia. However, it’s very important that we stay vigilant or we may end up like the good folks in Colorado, Washington and Virginia.

Truer words never spoken. I never thought it would happen, until it did.

I dunno I support it. Think of how much homicides would be reduced if they outlawed incendiary 50 cal bullets?? I see them used in homicides near me all the time. Sounds like it's right on the mark.

What.. Homicides near you are different? Not a lot people carrying 12k barretts around?

Btw love your guitar playing.

What is an assault weapon? I spent 21 years in the army and never came across one. I had an m16A1 and now as a civilian I have an AR15. Wish I knew what an assault weapon looks like.

Might be better to confiscate the cell phones and cars of the flash mob/gang banger kids so they can't organize and commit their crimes..........
I never see a desire to confiscate the car from a felony DUI offender.......

this won't go anywhere until enough people think that and then it goes somewhere. get off your collective cans and call or write/e-mail your state reps now.

As a gun owner you better be voting only for the pro-gunner on the ticket.

Gary Johnson? Yepper.

I wouldn't trust Trump or anyone else from the two major parties on guns as far as I could throw em.

Chimo, you're going to have to trust someone who is going to win.

As said, this election is for everything. We can't afford the luxury of our own ego. Making electoral statements this time around is a losing proposition.

Just a friendly reminder: we don't do direct political discussions here.
Talking about who one should vote for is probably crossing that line.

I'm glad the state legislature is generally too sensible to pass such an atrocious bill, but the statement about vigilance is right. If you are a GA resident, you should probably make your opinion known to your representatives.

You are exactly correct. Thank you for that.

Anymore of this type of thing and this thread will be closed. Should I mention that the person causing the closure may well be banned from TFL?

Damn them pesky rules!
