Did anyone ever notice in "Star Wars' some of the rifles the StormTroopers had looked just like some of the German Machine Guns. I never noticed all the WWII German stuff that is in that movie until about 2yrs ago. Darth Vaders Helmet/Nazi Helmet even Han Solos pistol looks like a Mauser pistol.

I heard that either Lucas or Spielberg has a gun collection of World War II machine guns and Some of them were in the Star Wars Movies. If you don't know what I'm talking about one of them was in the scene Where Chewbacca is handcuffed.
Anyone know what kind of Rifle that is? I saw one at a gun show last weekend but nobody was around to ask.
Its a goofy question but there is no place better to ask it.

yes some of them are Germans Guns, i know that they use the MG-34 and the Mauser C96 'Broomhandle' and the Ster SMG.

Is the C96 the one I was talking about? I think thats what I saw the other day. I was unaware of the British guns. Did they actually have the magazines feed sideways?

Han Solo's blaster was a tricked out mauser c96. Do a search on the web and you can find people selling non firing replicas of it.

Yeah I noticed that a while back, I was watching it and this storm trooper walking around in the Death Star had an MG-34! I was like "OMG! Why didn't I notice this before"

Crazy stuff....

The original Star Wars costumes and gear are on display at the Field Museum in Chicago; I've been to the exhibit twice!

Yes, Han Solo's pistol is a Mauser broomhandle with other misc. accessories bolted on.

Vadar's helmet was based on the Swiss army helmet of the 50 - 60's era, which in itsself closely resembles the German "Fritz" style helmet.

I've also heard that the guns used by the sandpeople in the original Star Wars are actually Mosin-Nagant M91/30 rifles.

HI! The one used by Chewbacca in the detention block was an MG-34.

Lots of great weapons where used in the movies in the Star Wars series. Some heavily modified, some not at all.

The Stormtroopers used the:
German MG-15
German MG-34
German MG-42
British Lewis Gun
British L2A3 Sterling Submachine Gun(The main blaster)

Hans Solo's Blaster (and Lukes):
German C96 "Broomhandle" Mauser

Leia's pistol:
Soviet Margolin .22 MTs Target Pistol

Greedo's pistol(Going somewhere Solo?):
Ruger Mark 1 pistol

The Jawas rifle used to shoot R2D2:
A cutdown British Enfield Number 1 Mark 3 (.303 caliber grenade launching rifle)

Boba Fett's rifle:
British Webley and Scott No. 1 Mark I 37mm Flare Gun

The Hoth Rebel Troopers from Empire:
German MP44 Sturmgewehr Assault Rifle

Chewbacca's Bowcaster:
Barnett Commando Crossbow

Yea I'm a geek.:D
I also worked in the industry and owned one and handled many original props from this series and many other fine(and some rotten but with neat props) SF movies.

A quick story related to props. Got a flat tire on a busy street in Hollywood while transporting some large rifle-size props in the trunk. Pulled over in front of a garage sale(by chance) to fix flat. Had to unload some of the props to get out spare and jack. Call goes out to LAPD "See the garage sale selling machine guns."

4 cars, 8 officers, 4 shotguns.

You know the hole at the end of the barrel of a 12gauge looks almost a foot across when its pointed at your head. Once they found we where propmakers with props they mumbled "Sorry" and quickly vanished. That was 10 years ago, I hate to think what might of happened in todays atmosphere, but then we didn't point nothing at them either.:)

Spielberg is,in fact, a gun collector although you'd never know it as he doesn't advertise it around to his "liberal" Hollywood friends. I know this because I was involved with a project that provided me with this information, albeit second hand, but it was verified.

What I'd like to know is, who is he on TFL? I wonder if we're talking to him on a regular basis without knowing it?

If you think of it, however, his movies protraying weapons have always been pretty exciting and well balanced including Private Ryan. Right?

Have an enjoyable holiday everyone!

I've never noticed brass being ejected out of the guns or Stormstroopers reloading in the movie. How did they fire blanks in the gun without brass cases ejecting?

computer graphics

HI! Hehe, Computer graphics...My PDA has more computing power than the computers of the time the first Star Wars movie was made. Its done with mechanical optical effects and editing. Ever see them fire twice in a scene without an edit? Well maybe, but the second shot is just a fake recoil and use of an optical effect. They use the blast from the blank as a reference que.

Blanks generally don't cycle the action due to the lack of enough recoil(no bullet to push against) but if you look close in the beginning of the film just before Darth Vader enters the princess' ship you will see 9mm cases on the ground. Also in the hanger scene when they blast out of mos eisly. The sterlings had the normal 30 round mags cut down to about 5...If I rememeber right. Its action, shoot, cut, manually cycle, action, shoot, cut, repeat, to get the desired effect.

LongArms your right about the computer graphics thing. They were still blowing up model X-wing fighters in those days. I have to look for the 9mm brass. I got to get me one of those Sterlings.

I'll never look at those movies the same! I just saw Star Wars and now I see the brass all over the place after every shoot out. I think I ruined it for myself, knowing there not real blasters.

Yeah - I'm a geek too:

It's too long to post here - but the Guns of Star Wars as well as the rest had been published at Echo Station and I think still are.

Here is a part:
Looking at Solo's Handi Blaster, you see that it is topped with a type of scope. Some have asked me "Why? - He never uses it!" Let me go out on a limb here. I have read that Solo's blaster has been less than ATF approved modifications, such as military grade energy packs and what not. His gun is capable of doing a great deal more damage. Should Han want to deliver this damage precisely, he would use the scope. When we have seen him use his Blaster in combat, no, he didn't use the scope. He might have even been killed if he tried to use it. "What?" you say. Let me explain.

Scopes on handguns are not fast devices to use, and in the shooting community it is debated on whether or not any sites are fast enough to use in combat, and there are to schools of thought on this. One school is the "Point Shooting" group, who believe in keeping your eyes on the target and pointing the gun naturally. A prime example of this is in the scene when Luke yells "No!" after seeing Ben get hacked. Look at his stance, feet wide apart, knees bent, arms out forming a triangle. Classic point shooting there. This is touted as been the fastest method of shooting and is also some times called the "Israeli Technique". The other side of the shooting coin is more concentrating on the front site - for accurate shot placement, you take a second and aim. Han uses neither styles in any strict sense. He uses an older point shooting method that is a throw back to the old western style of index shooting. This is actually very in character with Solo, whos primary style is "Just Blast it". Back to the scope, technically it is correct that he didn't use it in any of the depicted situations.

And quite often you observed Stormies packing MG-42s all over the place - never mind the dressing up on the MG, STOCK works just fine even in a galaxy far, far away. Mostly the Stormies are packing the DL-44, which is actually a dressed up British Sterling submachine gun - one of the finest subguns ever made. The Sterling, and the resulting DL-44, has a folding stock. The stock folds up under barrel on the bottom and can snap out to full extension very quickly. Of course, we never saw a trooper shoulder his blaster. If one had, then the movie would have ended rather abruptly. Fire from a shouldered weapon is on average much much more accurate and easier and faster to shoot as well. I like the Stormies - they have a Key Stone Cop feel to them when they are all firing. One of the worst insults I have heard on the firing ranges is "Your Shooting Like A Storm Trooper!" I laugh at Ben's line "Only Imperial Storm Troopers are so precise." This makes me believe a Fire Arms Instructor would make a great living there on Tatooine. That, and Imperial Trainers need a good butt kicking.

So, this leaves the question "Who is the best shot in Star Wars?" I am not sure, but I think Leia. She took out a Stormie with her modified Luger, one in the beginning of Episode 4, with a single shot right to the heart (just before she gets stunned), and two of them in episode 6, while on the forest moon of Endor. Not to mention the troopers she picks off with the DL-44 while covering Lukes butt while he's playing Tarzan after he blasted the controls to extend the bridge. You Go Girl!

There are lots of other noteworthy items to talk about. Like the Maxim Machine gun on Hoth and the Sheridan tank turrets there too. This hardware gives SW a lot of credibility. Look at these guns, Real Guns, then look at the latest Star Trek film. Just what the heck is a "Phaser?" That doesn't sound like a weapon to me. Think of this: You alone in a parking lot - a big hair thug is charging you before you can get in you car and drive away, this guy eats raw hobbits. Do you want to PHASE him? Or Blast him?

Empty casings from the Sterlings can clearly (but briefly) seen in some scenes. In particular, if you check out the chase after breaking out Leia where her and Luke had to swing over a gap you can see casings fly out when she is shooting at troopers just above them. Also, when they were escaping Lando's sky city and Leia is firing back from underneath the Falcon you can see casings. You don't even need DVD to see these. IIRC, the feed portion of the lower receivers of the STrooper's MGs were missing so they were non-functioning.

There are also some hidden bloopers...
You see a trooper smack his head on a low overhang...
and some others. If your really into Star Wars:

Also - when you watch the scenes when they are in the Mos Isley Space Port - keep an eye out for Waldo. He is wearing a brownish tan vest and a hat that has goggles on it. He is ALL OVER the place. You think the guns are interesting - try to figure out what the heck this guy is up to!
