Gen 4 Glock 17 vs 19 with dedicated ccw

I apologize if this has been addressed before so please feel free to point me in the right direction if there is a previous thread on this.

I just turned 21 and submitted my application for a ccw in Ga. I currently own an M&P shield 9 and am planning on it being my primary ccw 99% of the time. I am stuck between a gen 4 Glock 17 or 19 for SHTF / competition / HD / etc... I am very familiar and attracted to the versatility of the 19 for any situation but I am wondering if I will prefer the 17 with a longer sight radii and +2 capacity for other applications other than carry since I already have the shield specifically for that.

I am a strong shooter and have had time behind the 19 but not the 17. I have handled the 17 and prefer a full sized handgun (I also own a full sized M&P .40) but the 19 feels very good as well.

I do try an analyze every aspect possible to make the most educated and practical decision I can so please feel free to add any pro/con I may have missed

Thanks,
Hunter

I prefer the feel of the 17gen4 as well... But releiving some material under the trigger guard on my 19gen4 really improved the feel of the 19 for me. It's not as good as the 17gen4, but close.

To the point that I am torn over getting a 17 or another 19. I was wanting one, but I am sure my fiance is going to steal my 19, and I was thinking it would be a good winter ccw... But my m&p FS is only a little bigger than a 19 and would probably work as well. Being I have a m&p9c for carry most of the time, it might be nice to have the same platform... So I may just go 17gen4 FDE (just like the FDE look)

As far as carry is concerned, the 19 is superior to the 17 for that.

I find the 19 to be capable for most things, and that the 17 is really only got 2 rounds and a little better feel in the hand going for it. For range, open carry, and general ownership, the 17 is great... You just need to ask yourself how likely you are to carry something other than the shield, and if you feel it a good idea to have the mid size glock over the full.

I would say get the 19 since it does everything the 17 does with a smaller package. The 19 can take 17 mags and also 33 rounders. I own a g19 and dont regret it at all.

But my suggestion is stick to the shield for ccw like you are already planning and us the mp40 fullsize for HD, SHTF, competition etc. Instead use that money to feed those hungry mp's.

It's all about personal preference.

There are many folks who find that they shoot the smaller Glock 19 better than the 17, and vice versa. I don't find much of a difference at all when shooting them.

For carry, there is no doubt that the 19 is better. For HD use, remember that the 19 can also use the 17's 17-round mags, so it gives up nothing in capacity.

I appreciate the reply brother and im stuck on those points exactly.

I thought about using the shield for ccw during the summer and the 19 during the winter. Granted I do have a full size M&P as well but I think the 17 would serve great as a general purpose firearm and I would really like to get by without any frame modification to the 19 (even though it would be so cool to get a badass stippling job on it).

Absolutely,

I really like that the 19 takes the 17 magazines so no loss in capacity there. I would mainly be using it for a primary range / training / all around gun and getting it to have a larger combat/SHTF 9mm since the shield is quite tiny.

I love the M&P 40 but definitely prefer to shoot 9mm (recoil, cost etc) I got a really good deal on the 40 and have it mainly to expand the calibers I can shoot in my collection.

Thanks again

I prefer the 17 as well but the 19 is nice if you relieve the trigger guard a lot.

I recently went through a similar quandary and chose ... the G26 Gen 3.

I've owned a G22 Gen2, G23 Gen4 and G27 Gen3 for years and like the way each feels. My preference had been the G19/23 compact though. However, a couple months ago when I decided to get a 9mm Glock I pitted the G19 vs. the G26 and many times handled both in Gen 3&4. I of course loved the G19 Gen4 but couldn't eliminate the G26. I loved its feel and knew the advantages of the stubby subcompact. What really surprised me was the G26 Gen3 felt better to me than the Gen4 version.

Anyway, all that just illustrates why you have to go with whatever makes sense to you and feels best. There is no wrong answer, you have experience with Glock so get the one that works for you.

Since CCW is covered with the Sheild, go for the G17 for the full size features (longer sight radius, full grip, etc); maybe G34 for even longer barrel.

I really like my G34 gen 4. (My next Glock experiment would probably be a Gen 4 G22 fully converted to 9mm or a more practical G26 for when I feel under-gunned with the Kahr K9).

I have both, and prefer the 17. The 19's grip is cramped for me, although its a big improvement over the earlier generations with the mag rip cutout in the front. Its not really uncomfortable, but find its a distraction, as something just doesnt feel right, something I dont get with my 17's and 26's. Ive thought about filing the little radius at the bottom of the frontstrap flat, and relieving the trigger guard, just never got around to it.

The 19's shoot well, but the 17's shoot just that much better. Longer sight radius/barrel, a couple of extra rounds in the mag you "normally" carry, and the 17's are just as easily carried as the 19's.

If youre looking to go down in size, the 26 is a better choice.

I like the G17 over the 19 myself.
The 19 is a fine pistol to be sure but the 17 has a bit of a longer sight radius that would lend it to be a better target/range gun.
It is not so much bigger that it cannot be concealed easy enough with a good holster and right dress.

I sold my 19 but kept my 26 for ccw and my 17 I use for target,I saw no reason to have the 19 being I had the 26 and 17. I think you would like the 17 over the 19 if you are going to be target shooting and with the right holster its also is a nice cc handgun but the 19 is nice too(this is confusing) :D.

I was just in this recent dilemma and ended up going with the 17 since my Shield 9mm is my dedicated carry gun. The only time I would be carrying the 19 or 17 is in the winter where concealability doesn't matter, so for that reason I went with the 17 and never looked back.

I have large hands and long fingers, and I have never felt the need to make any modifications to the trigger guard of the Glock 19.

The OP really needs to get a 19, 17, and 34 into his hands before making a decision.

I'm just gonna go ahead and throw my hat in here too, I recently made a VERY similar decision, and went with the 17. Longer grip, longer barrel, longer sight radius, ect. It's not the perfect carry gun but I believe it sets the bar for full sized duty guns. If you have a subcompact, get the full sized and if you want the middle ground get it later.

There is really only one way to know, buy one and work with it. You lose nothing by doing so and gain in knowledge.
