Gang defensive tactics

There is a trend in which 3 or 4 hooligans pounce on an unexpecting victim all at once. Mainly I have seen this around here with defenseless homeless, but now its spreading to regular working people on the street.

How does one protect themselves from such gang attack? What does a person look for in the neighborhood?

Avoid those neighborhoods.

Avoid unlit or shadowed areas.

Be careful nearing corners.

Walk like you know where you are going.

Carry yourself like you know what you are doing.

And avoid those neighborhoods.

Cheers,

M

Also, look around repeatedly as you are walking. Muggers tend to go for unsuspecting people. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Appear to not be the "easy" target, avoid blindly walking along with you Ipod on, jacking with your cell phone, etc. Be aware. With that said I wouldn't be super obvious with my awareness, ie glaring at the potential "threats". That is just begging for the "What are you looking at" or "You got something to say" agressive lines. The rule I always go by is to act like you belong there.

This type of "tactic" has been going on for a long time now, actually. Gangsters, thieves etc. have always prey on those that are vulnerable. I have taught martial arts now for a little over 20 years now and have always tried to teach my kids to never be ALONE in unfamiliar areas, never be ALONE in dark and desolate areas etc. The key in these circumstances is that most of the folks that are being attacked are alone. If you have to be travelling alone, then try to stay in places that are populated and not desolate.

Bring in a little napalm and cook her on down!! Robing Williams Good mornign Vietnam.

I would simply avoid the area and if i did have to be there it would be heads up. No dark alleys, No daydreaming. Be aware and be smart.

Avoid?

Avoid what area? It's not like the bad guys are waiting in there neighborhood for an unsuspecting person to come along. If their needy there going wherever to get what they need.

Be serious...

.... sure, the bad guys can go to different neighborhoods.

Still, some neighborhoods earn reputations for being more dangerous than others.

Bedford-Stuy in New York, Cabrini Green in Chicago, the Combat Zone in Boston, Rampart and South Central in LA, the South Orange Blossom Trail and Pine Hills areas of Orlando are all examples.

To a lesser extent, most cities have their more dangerous neighborhoods. Look where the majority of muggings, armed robberies, drug busts, rapes, and homicides occur; your local paper will usually have those stats.

Avoid those neighborhoods, and your odds of gang encounters drop dramatically.

You could as easily say that, hey, sharks are everywhere, so you could run into them anywhere in the ocean.

That may be true, but I still choose to avoid those areas where surf fisherman are casting bait; chum has been put in the water; guys have speared fish on lines; deep channels move through shallows; the shoreward side of shoals and sandbanks after the tide has gone low.

Cheers,

M

Just remember momma's dinner time rule if you happen to get into it with 3, 4, or more hooligans:

Everyone gets "firsts" before anyone gets "seconds". Put 230 grains of copper plated lead into each one as fast as you can, . . . once you have determined that your life is in danger, . . . and you have no other way of extricating yourself from said situation.

You may have to explain yourself to cops, a DA, a judge, and even more than one jury, . . . but it beats the heck out of having your mail delivered by the local ground hog.

May God bless,
Dwight

I think that before one ventures out that they should reasonably be aware of the areas through which they will be travelling. In addition, one should be aware of what is all around them and when possible walk as close to a wall as possible. If you walk near a wall, all you do is turn 90 degrees and put your back next the wall. That way nobody sneaks up on you. Posts make lousy protection devices because somebody will always try to sneak around one to get to you. If you have the chance, step back into a doorway or recess which will make approaching you even harder. Watch for people spread out along the sidewalk and one or two walking towards you. If you see two standing along the curb and two walking towards you expect an ambush type attack. Also be very leery of somebody approaching you with a, "Hey, Mister..." That could be the last thing that you hear because his buddy is striking you from behind. If you carry concealed think about where you need to have your gun for a sudden attack. Do you want your gun in a holster on your strong side or would it be better to have it in a coat pocket in your hand and ready? Do you walk with your hand in your pocket? The reason I ask is because I talked to a mugger who said that he NEVER would try to attack a person with their hand in their pocket because he thought that those people either had a gun or an open knife ready to go for fighting. What muggers look for are the perpetual victim or easy mark. The person who walks with their head down and looks timid but well dressed. Got that? Show some bling and look mousey, well, you're marked for a take down. Walk like you're angry, strong or proud and most muggers will leave you alone. Also make noise... yell... when confronted. Muggers hate noise, attention and light. Don't walk down dimly lit streets. Use your head. Scan ahead and if it looks dark in the middle of the block, go around that area by means of another well lighted street. Stay away from wooded areas like parks, cemeteries, etc. at night. If you know that you're going to be out late at night, carry something deceptive for clubbing a dirtbag like an umbrella or cane. If you're going to carry an umbrella or cane, know how to use it in a defensive manner. Don't leave anything behind at the scene when you leave either. Remember, when possible, try to "mark" your attacker in some fashion. If you are attacked or grabbed, and if you have a knife handy, slice the dirtbag deep across the belly or face really good to identify him later on if you need it. So what if you take out an eye of his? What's he going to do? Sue you? No, more than likely he'll try to say he was attacked "by some gangbangers" instead of admitting that he tried to rob somebody. If you do get attacked, do not and I mean NEVER again use that route home if it is at all possible. Just in case, have your attorney's phone number on speed dial should you need it or feel the need to talk to somebody of the legal profession.

Oh, you racist bastard! I'll have you know it's SOUTH Los Angeles now, not SOUTH CENTRAL. They changed the name, so that all the bad people would leave, and now skittles fall from rainbows into the mouths of smiling nuns.

Just usecommon sense...

Be aware of surroundings, keep eye and ears open.
Walk with purpose. (and carry a big stick)

I don't mean for race to come into this...

... but those are the areas of those cities with the highest per capita levels of violent crime.

We had some rougher neighborhoods where I grew up, which was 99% white. The rates weren't as dramatic, but we still had some not-so-safe places.

Cheers,

M

For the most part, I agree with Rifleman173...

... and his points mirror mine, for the most part, though expanded and more detailed.

However, I am not so sure about the moving along a wall part. In the middle portion of a building, this could be fine, but not necessarily even then.

The problems are doorways, recesses, and corners.

If you are along the wall, there are stretches where it can give you a wall to put at your back. But there are also good hiding points for potential attackers, and if you are right up on the wall, you are both in grab range and blocking your potential lines of sight around those corners.

Be aware of walls, and ready to use them, but stay out of easy arm's reach of recesses, doorways, shadows, and corners.

Cheers,

M

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet...

... but listen to your sixth sense, too.

If something seems wrong, even if you don't know why, then something may very well be wrong.

At those times, listen more carefully, and be ready to leave.

Cheers,

M

MLeake, my apologies. I was trying to be funny, and it didn't come across right. I'm sorry.

What I was saying is that the liberals decided to change the name of a terrible place, hoping the place would change. We know better.
