Gander Mountain Prices?

Hi all. I recently went to the one in Monroe, NC east of Charlotte. I had never been to one before so my lady and I decided to have a little redneck side trip. I was amazed at the amount of firearms, gear, and selection they had. I figured with their buying power they would at least be competitive. Maybe nationally they are, but not compared to my town. We are lucky enough to have over 15 LGS within 30 minutes of my house. On average I would say Ganders prices were 10-15 percent higher than the upper end of what I can find locally. In some cases more than that. I bought a Range Officer the same day for $140 less then they were asking. They were VERY proud of a couple of used revolvers they had too. I am not really griping or trying to turn them out, I was just surprised by this. I will say they did have a lot of stuff no one else I that have seen carries though and no indication of a shortage of ammo either. Is this true all over?

No, the Gander Mt. in Coldwater, Michigan has little in the way of gun stuff, especially hand loading. However, their prices are as high there as you noted. I would not even consider buying a gun from them be it new or one of their over-price used ones. I just go there to look once and awhile.

Some people find a certain psychological comfort inside big box stores. Some people don't at all mind paying a 15% premium for that psychological comfort. Some people would get a bit of a "creepy" feeling looking at guns in a tiny out-of-the-way low-overhead gun store or buying one off the internet. Some people don't know the first thing about guns so they wouldn't know the difference between a knowledgeable-about-guns sales person and a Gander sales person who may possibly only be one step ahead of them. Some people interested in buying a gun don't WANT to know much about guns or varieties in gun pricing.

These are mostly the customers who buy guns at Gander... It's all good.

Some folks call them "Gouger" Mountain.

They just expanded their store where I live and now have a HUGE gun selection. However, as you mentioned, they are very proud of their guns and have priced them accordingly. Like BASS Pro and Cabela's, those fancy stores cost money to build, stock and maintain. All three had much better pricing when they were only catalog places....

The Gander store in Tonawanda, NY has gone down hill. Prices are up and inventory is down, they had a lot of nice stuff in the beginning but now it is more of a clothing store with higher end brands like North Face, Columbia etc. There is hardly no deals to be had at this location.

I quit even going in G-MT. due to the high prices on shooting and fishing equipment.

If I want to pay more for a sporting product then what I can get it for at my fav. smaller, private LGS or Walmart, Meijer etc. then I go to Cabella's. At least the wildlife scenery is better there.

So true. They are proud of their stuff. But if you need something there's a chance they have it in stock!
Not in all stores. In Coldwater, Michigan they do not have powder, dies, primers...zero, zilch, nada. They did years ago, but now, nothing. Only high-priced guns, high-priced clothing, high-priced fishing equipment. It is a good place to see and handle the latest chamberings in long-guns though. But, I have no interest in paying $100+ more for a gun than I can get in my local gun store. I have never bought a gun from them, and never will.

I don't share that. The superficially polished but cheap and soul-less "gun mall" ambiance depresses me.

But then, my 2 preferred dealers run out of a shack on a farm, and a converted gas station.

Pricing -- GM is the only place I've seen where I've seen magazines priced over manufacturer's suggested retail.

The one next to me had 22lr last time I was there for $7.95/100 for CCI mini mags. I thought under the current condition it was not a bad deal. They also had a few of the Swiss K11 C&R for $399. A little high but you get to hand pick.

I know where I live MN and ND. I don't see how they can sell anything. Powder for 1 lb at local Scheels is $24.99, At Gander- $30.00 plus. Then they say they will match any ones price, That is only if everyone else has it in stock at the time. Ummm If they had it in stock--Why the heck would I be here shopping:rolleyes: Talked to them over a year ago about it and there reply was--We are working on getting our prices in line with everyone else. I see that plan is a still in the works kinda thing:D

The Gander here in college station tx and Corsicana tx says they charge higher prices because they have to pay for all those mounted animals in the store that they get from the taxidermist.

Yep, in MN they are by far the most expensive. Like CWKarfan said, they market to the people who really are not into guns and don't know pricing unlike most of us here.
The thing that annoys me is if people are paying high prices at GM and guns and supplies are moving then to some degree that will drive the rest of the prices up all over and for that reason I will not ever support them.

Watch the asterisks, please - GEM

We have a new store in San Antonio with a giant gun section but the prices for guns and ammo are significant higher than anyone else. I cannot see not comparison shopping. You could save $100 with a simple drive around town.

During the last handgun shortage, the local GM had many handguns while other LGS had none. The reason was price. Many times they have used handguns for more than what the other LGS have new ones for. It may have worked for them when guns were scarce, but it may come back to haunt them.

Gander Mountain in Morrisville NC usually has good inventory - with jacked up prices. I shop there and buy at the LGS, even if they have to order the item.

The local guys often have guns for the same price or better than GM. The local guys also gave me a free hour at their indoor range to test out a new purchase. At GM, I've seen used guns with prices close to the MSRP for new ones, and new ones that were over MSRP. The local store closed a couple of years ago, though. Everybody was spending more money at GM, I guess. Plus, I never heard them advertise. The people who bought that store/range advertise all the time.

I've bought ammo at GM when it was on sale, but most of the time it was cheaper for the same stuff at Walmart. In some cases, it's 50% higher at GM for the same stuff.

GM here sells used guns. GM is the only palce I have ever been in where a used guns costs more than a new ones. I am talking about a plain ordinary guns still in production.
Last place I would shop for guns and ammo.
