My last attempt at pushing past a conventional 100 yd zero with the 270 win whitetail ammo yielded mediocre results at 300 yds--though it could have been due to a variety of factors (i.e. me).
Today I decided to try the American Whitetail 150gr version for my 300 wm Savage 111 hunter (at 400 yds). I am not an experienced long-distance shooter (or mid-range for you true long-range shooters) but because of an obstruction at the range I had to put my target up a hill. I've never taken this kind of shot before so added a few mils to the ballistics read-out I got from Hornady's calculator. Although I obviously over-compensated--I'm still pretty pleased. Lacking a good spotting scope or bino's I really had no idea where the shots were landing as I took them. I shot off a bipod sitting on a portable bench. I'm still working on getting confidence up to take these kinds of shots on game--but I will stick with the easy 100yds and under for now.
