Fun discussion regarding James Bond

couldn't shoot down that helicopter with a Kimber Solo!

Sean Connery, as Bond, shot down a helicopter with an Armalite AR-7 (which was described as a .25 caliber) in one of the early movies, From Russia With Love,..

I think Jethro Bodine, Double-Naught Spy, could take down a helicopter with Uncle Jed's blackpowder rifle. Granny could cook it for supper!

Bond's preference, in the movies anyway, was established early-on as a .25 Beretta. Q insisted that Bond use the PPK, instead.

Bond was correct to prefer the Beretta IMO. Another case where the geek back in supply has the by the numbers solution that is actually inferior ;)

Just being different.

I'm all for the "COOL" thing with James Bond guns, and British prestige is A consideration. But if his sidearm MUST be German, what would have been wrong with a Mauser HSc in .380 or 9mm Ultra? It's certainly sleeker than the Walther, and just LOOKS more graceful (to me, anyway).

Bond has never used an English handgun.

Yep, you're right.....however; (this is a stretch on my part), Roger Moore did use a S&W 629 in "Live and let Die", pretty sure at the time S&W was owned by a British firm.

Back again :) , Ian Fleming was not knowledgeable about guns. He had to ask friends advise about different guns, he , himself was very much in the dark when it came to firearms. He once had James Bond carrying ( in his books ) a automatic in a Berns- Martin shoulder holster. as most people know , this type holster will only work with revolvers . BTW, if he had been real, the PPK he carries would not have been a Walther, it would have been a French Manurhin version of the PPK. This what the British secret service ordered in 1954

John Gardner gave him quite a few different guns over the years

Colt 1911, Colt Detective Special, FN 1903, Ruger Redhawk, HK VP70, HK P7, ASP S&W, FN Hi-Power, Walther P-38K, SIG/Sauer P6, ASP Hi-Power.

I am probably forgetting a few.

And, IIRC, the Hi-Power was .40S&W in the Gardner book where he faced down the villain at EuroDisney....

My goodness!!! Why on Earth would he want to carry anything but that Walther PPK...after all, he shot a Helicopter out of the sky with it in this latest Spectre!! AND while moving at high speed in a boat...

Good point.

Bond is so bad he could spit 22's and down any Jet Fighter :D

AR-7 didn't knock out helicopter . It was guy he shot dropping the grenade inside that got the chopper. :p I never could find a 25 cal AR-7 so I settled for a 22LR model .

This got me to thinking:

Forget historical precedent - If the Bond character had never existed until today what would he carry?

I very much doubt a modern author would pick the old PPK. The later, non-Fleming books have him carrying the H&K P7 which was fine in the 80's-90's but that wouldn't be the pick for a modern Bond either.

I am quite frankly stumped as to what a 21st century Bond should carry, other than it has to be cool, small and European.

Beretta Px4 storm sc in 9mm

Howdy,

Bond should carry a Beretta Px4 Storm subcompact in the quintessential European caliber: 9mm. Of course Bond carries a .380 in the movies, so maybe a Pico.

MFitz, if we were to ignore historical precedence, I think a Sig P220 would be the utilitarian choice. But a Korth Semi Auto would be the elitist choice.

Bond don't carry an ugly gun....so the small Berettas are off the list. [emoji41]

As a guy who needs a gun that won't ruin the line of his tuxedo, I could see him carrying a Seecamp .32ACP.

For serious work, I see him using a Browning Hi-Power or CZ-75 variant. Old school all the way....

my two cents:

A Bond gun should, herein I agree with many former posts, be very concealable and thus tiny.

> It's got to be a gun that gives Bond a chance to escape a firefight (or acquire a more powerful firearm) or fend off the occasional BG coming at him with a knive or the like, but not a bulky full size offensive handgun to win a major shootout or bring down the very helicopter often mentioned.

> Stealth assassination may also be an issue from time to time, so with the iconic silencer, the 7,65mm in the old movies or the recent .380 do make sense since these are easy to suppress (and with a reasonable small can). Other than that, only 9mm makes sense since it is "European", easy to obtain in many countries and the most powerful round that is still manageable in a pocket gun.

> One of the main feats of classic Bond movies used to be the gadgets (not that much nowadays, it appears, but still...). Thus, it makes no sense to me that Bond still carries a classic yet outdated model (again, the new Bond movies seem to rely heavily on vintage elements in their aestethics).

My proposals would be:

> Walther PPS - carrying Bonds gun tradition into the 21st century
> Boberg - something exotic with kind of a in-built "gadget factor"
> or a .380 or .32, intentionally trading firepower for even more concealability and silencer effectiveness (any suggestions for this category?)

That was entertaining... and virtually impossible.

But hey its a movie. He could've shot it with a .22 and the chopper could've exploded.

I always wondered why he carried such a small pistol to begin with (size and caliber). he can conceal a compact pistol e.g. HK USP, Glock19/23/30, etc. Of course producers/writers make the choice, but for the more educated crowd, we all know half the things are all for show.

Good movie btw. I like how he actually ends up with the girl in the end.

I'm more than a little biased, but I think 2015 Bond should carry a Walther PPQ, in 9mm of course. :D The natural '80s Bond gun should have been a HK P7 or Walther P88. I understand the angle of heritage for the films, which is the same reason they keep bringing back the classic Aston Martin DB5, but a modern Bond shouldn't carry the PPK as his primary. Back up gun perhaps.

Oh well, kudos to Pierce for carrying the P99 in The World Is Not Enough. And Craig spent a little quality time with the HK VP9 and Sig Sauer P226 in Spectre.

One thing for sure is, that Mr. Bond always got "The-Girl", no matter what kind of gun he had. Most of the time he had to weight till the end, but......
On the other hand, so do so many dog-walkers.:D
