Full sized handguns for smaller hands

Capacity needs to be 9 or 10 rounds (though 9 and in in the tube is fine). 10 round magazine capacity is maximum allowed here.

Tried an STI Trojan at the IPSC match on the weekend, very nice firearm and points beautifully. Was looking at the Trojan and the Spartan, is there a difference between the two?

Had a look at the S&W SD9, its barrel length is under legal requirement so it is out. Minimum barrel length (unless I can find an SD9 with a extended barrel) is 4.8 inches.

I don't know if the Glocks would work out for your intended competition, but...the Gen 4 series has interchangable back straps that may help with fit. My wife's got medium hands and finds that the G19 Gen 4 fits her well and allows full use of all the controls without contortion.

Another option would be a 1911. With an extended thumb safety, magazine release, flared mag well, adjustable trigger and Novak sights, Ruger's SR1911 might be right up your alley. Mine's one of the best of the type I've ever shot...accuracy is superb, right out of the box. Supply, here in the USA, hasn't caught up with demand as yet, but they can be had here for $650 if you see one.

Best Regards, Rod (30 Cal's Dad)

I have an STI Spartan in 9mm and it is wonderful to shoot. Biggest difference betwen the Spartan and the Trojan is better finish on the Trojan and it has a ramped barrel (Spartan does not have a ramped barrel)

I liked the handling of the STI guns, the 1911 style fit me better than the Glock and CZ did (yay for single stack), though its a pity the SR1911 is only in 45 (only allowed 9mm/.357/.38 super) but will look into other 1911 frames and see what I can find.

As for the Glock, the 19 is too small to meet requirements, which sucks because it looks like it will fit me better than the 17. The 17A I used at the range is a Gen 2 so will see if I can find some specs on the Gen 4 and see how much the back strap will reduce the grip width by. The advantage of the Glock is the lack of external controls. I can reach the mag release fine, the trigger fine but the slide stop is just out of reach for my thumb so I need to adjust my grip to lock it back to show clear (though I can two hand it to achieve this as we only need to lock back at the end of the run). If I can find a mod or a better way to reach the slide stop without shifting my hands too much it might be a winner for my first handgun - the extended slide stop might help. Price difference between the Glock and the STI is massive (50% cheaper for a Glock) so it might be worth considering so I can get up and running with my own gun sooner. Resale on Glocks is pretty good here too, so I can sell it once/if I find something better down the track.

Thankyou Australian anti-gun lobby for making this such a pain in the ass to get into this sport!

Thanks for the suggestions though, gave me a few more designs and manufacturers to look at for options.

I believe we are similar. I can palm a basketball, but that's due to mostly my palm.

I don't think there's a gun out there, where I don't have to move my hand slightly to operate all of the controls. It's just a fact of life.

My 1911 probably fits me best, but my EAA Witness, the older wonder finish, is about the same.

I tried an HK 45 full size, P9 full size, CZ97 45, and a Witness Match Elite., all of which are too large for my grip.

I also have a Springfield P9C in 40. I also have a P9C in 9mm. Glock 19 and have tried the Berettas.

Here's what I can tell you:

Most 9mm come in double stack, which rules you and I out.

Looking at 40 calibers helps, because they don't carry as many rounds, and the grips are a bit thinner. I really like the P9C in 40, but the 9mm is 1.5 ounces heavier (barrel weight mostly).

Except that .40 is essentially banned here. You CAN get special exemptions for it but thats a whole different pile of paperwork and requirements.

6 Months wait and 12 month probation is enough for a basic pistol license.

Its 9mm, .38 Special, .357 and .38 Super only. All other calibers over this size are restricted or banned.

I did notice that the STI's are single stack and come in both 9mm and .38 Super so it might be the right way to go. Or I just get something that is doublestack (despite only being allowed 10 round mags) and practice over and over to find a better way to slide lock.

Most of my customers with small hands like the M&P line from S&W and commander sized 1911s.

The Gen 4 Glock with no backstrap is also becoming more popular for smaller handed folks.
