Full size 1911- how concealable?

Concealable in a fanny or shoulder pack.

1911s are not designed for CC. Modified for CC but not ideal with the exposed hammers, long grips, snagable sights, and increased width.

Carry what you like but someone is probably going to notice that budge in your pants (front or back) or your stiff walk. Length of the barrel matters when you sit down in your car seat - either your johnson or your kidney takes the discomfort.

I'd stick to smaller and thinner guns like the mini-Glocks, HKP7, or a Kahr for a gun without a safety or a hammer. Simple, pull out and pull trigger.

Leave the 1911 for the bullseye competition or range fun but not CC.

jtduncan, saying that crap three times won't make anyone believe you. I conceal carry a full size 1911 EVERY DAY here in very hot central Florida and no one has "made" me yet. Of course, you can't conceal a 1911 with a KMart thin belt and a nylon clip on holster...maybe you should try some serious gear? And I think I will stick to the gun with which I shoot the best, the 1911.

Build, size, and habits are critical with this, folks. I'm a behemoth and don't dress in tight clothes,AND I know how not to telegraph that I'm armed.Watch folks, you'll see someone getting out of a car and adjusting the piece, or just touching it to make sure it's still there.

G. Kennedy,

I agree w/you about the short grip and long barrel issue. I've been made fun of and belittled by a couple of big pistol smiths for even mentioning it. Its almost a religion to some and when you bring up anything that modifies their tradition, wheeew! Some people get downright nasty (present company excluded). Since the butt length and width of a gun have more to do w/concealability, I think that colt got the idea of the guvt frame, short slide backwards. Just my .02

My 2 cents here...I think it depends
on how bad you want to carry a full size
1911. That's all I've carried for years,
a little inconvienient at times, but worth
it for me. I carry either ITP holster,
"Mexican" style, or under the belt into
into the pants pocket; strongside. No problems.

Carrying a full size 1911 is no big deal. Most people aren't dedicated enough. They simply refuse to modify their dress code
and buy good quality leather gear.

"why carry a 39oz full size 1911 when you can carry a mini glock or one of those cute little mini kahrs? sounds like a big inconvenience to me..." etc...

These are the same people that go out and spend upwards of $700+ on a gun, then buy a cheap Uncle Mikes clip on holster and complain when they can't conceal it.

Buy your pants one size larger, get a good IWB holster, a decent belt and buy opaque shirts that can be worn untucked. Its no big deal...

I agree with dvc!
I carry three different 1911's. A GM, A L.W. Commander, and a Colt Defender. I pick the gun of the day by the weather, and the dress code of the events I plan to get into that day. All three guns conceal great if you have the best rigs you can afford! I have found that the L.W. Commander in a high quality beltslide holster with a quality belt to be about the best year around. Do not buy a $500-$700 gun and stick it in a $15 holster with a $15 belt. The more cheap rigs you buy, the more you'll have laying around. And you'll still be looking for something better! I'm not gonna' push any brand names at you, but it only takes a few mins. to check out the "good stuff" on-line!

I carry an alloy, officer sized Para P12 frame under a Para Commander length P13 slide. It disappears in a custom holster made by Horseshoe Leather. I find the officer frame much easier to conceal. Full length barrels pose no problems. I prefer the balance of the Commander length slide.

FWIW, add me to the list of posters who prefer going one size up in shirts rather than two sizes down in bore diameter.

God bless.

Great answers guys, thanks.

I think that alng with quality belts and holsters the single most neglected item of CCW holders is their pants- many seem to avoid the added expense of either:

1. Looser pants for IWB.

2. Well fitted pants for OWB.

Its always the gun's fault to these types, of course.

I never have a problem concealing a 5" 1911, I'm about 5'9", 180lbs.
Either in an IWB or just tucked in the waistband, it disappears. conceals better than my G23.
The key is to cant the gun forward, that conceals the butt of the gun.
