This is typical of the bigots and the newspaper editors need to be labeled for what they are.

Put the proper emotional tag on the offense by pointing out that the newspaper and other bigots are using the gun owners and inert guns as the current Social Niggers--scapegoats for society's failures. Now that we have established that it is not politically correct or ethical to treat Jews and African-Americans in this way, legitimate gun owners need to be on the same list.

It seems the newspaper is treating the list as though it were a registration of known criminal types like the sex offender list.

You really need to make sure that the message gets out that this is a list of people who are law abiding enough to comply wit the law and the criminals are those NOT on the list.

You may feel free to submit these comments to the editors of this or other local papers.

I just sent this to the paperI’m sure that it will never be printed and also fall on deaf ears.

This really burns me…

Subj: Thoughtless publication of names …

Dear editor
It is amazing that a news paper would abandon all thought for the safety of the public it is indebted to serve for the pursuit of political activism. I understand that those of decision making accountability in your organization are opposed to honest law abiding citizens carrying firearms for protection. That is your right to have such an opinion. I also understand your preponderancy to advance your personal views through slanted bias reporting of topics and events related to this matter. Although in understanding this I do not condone it as it makes clear a weakness in your character and the trustworthiness of your publication. Most disturbing however, is the fact that you would go out of your way to first acquire the names of Concealed Carry firearms permit holders and then print those names. This reveals your malicious intentions against honest citizens of your own community. I would further charge that in your blind ambition to advance your cause you have put at risk not only those honest citizens you dislike but also all the citizens of your community. The next unlicensed, unarmed victim of a violent attack in your area may be able to argue your culpability in that your paper destroyed the “collective community benefit” that exist when it is known that licensed citizens are carrying concealed legally. Specifically the lack of information with regard to who is carrying increases the deterrent to criminals for all citizens. However, the effect of the irresponsible publishing of this information is an enabler to the criminal element as it identifies individuals who are more venerable then others. Your actions are akin to the publishing of the names of all the homes in your area that have an active security system installed. By publishing such a list you would increase the likelihood of those without an alarm to be targets. Wonderful for myself not to live where such a self-severing, self-righteous, nearsighted publication carelessly endangers the public safety of neighbors for the personal dislike of those who would legally carry a firearm. Too bad, however, for the people of Fort Collins.

I wonder how many enterprising businessmen will use the list of names to promote business. Think about it, people who have CCW are good citizens, probably have money to spend, are good risks for loans and as employees.

You can't get a permit if you are a violent person, have been convicted of DUI, have an order of protection against you, have been convicted of a felony or otherwise have been a guest of the authorities. CCW holders are honest citizens and good risks, in fact they are pillars of the sommunity because they are willing to submit to background checks and police scrutiny! Think about it.

I can see the bumper sticker now

"HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR CCW PERMIT HOLDER TODAY"

I don't care who knows I have a gun, it should be a mark of good citizenship, and a matter of pride.

What a bunch of morons!! What is the necessity to advertise about CCW owners? Why make it "public Information"? If a LEO wants to find out, he has access to the CCW database anyway( & through your drivers license).
The whole idea of CCW does'nt make sense if the papers tell everyone about it.
In India License holders' names are not "public information". They are not disclosed to anyone except LEOs while conducting an investigation.
I strongly believe thats how it should be.

Far worse than the fact that theives in the town, (at least those who read the newspaper), know who owns a gun is the fact that our benevolent public servants have a list of who owns a gun. If the information that I have is correct, FAR more people die from murder by their own gvts than die from individual murderers. I'm not belittling the gravity of the newspaper release. I would be outraged. However, is there outrage about the fact that we are even required to register our firearms, then ourselves (ccw) if we wish to carry the means to defend our loved ones from harm?

FWIW, WV requires every applicant for concealed carry permission slips to publish that fact in their local papers classified ads along w/statement asking anyone who objects to said individual from carrying concealed to call county sheriffs office for their denial.

Colorado Paper Prints Concealed Carry Permit Holders' Names ...Again
by Angel Shamaya
Feb 21, 2000
http://www.keepandbeararms.org/colorado_permit_holders.htm

Dave Greiling, Executive Editor of The Fort Collins Coloradoan, exercised his right to publish the names of 607 Larimer County concealed carry permit holders in Sunday's paper. The only daily paper in a town of 120,000, the Coloradoan feels it is doing the community a service.

When I spoke to Mr. Greiling this afternoon he gave me several minutes and was more than accommodating. "I don't understand why the fact that we published these names is such a big deal now," He said. "This is not the first time we've done this."

My "bone of contention" with Editor Grieling's choice to publish the names was reminiscent of the Scarlet Letter --the book which tells of adulterers being required to wear a big red "A" when going about their public lives. I suggested to him that singling gun carrying citizens out amidst the anti-self-defense climate in Colorado may bring unwanted attention to the people identified.

Mr. Grieling's response was a fascinating question: "If crime goes down in places where people can carry a gun, won't these people now be even safer?"

When I ask myself if I want my name published as being a concealed carry permit holder, I get a good strong "NO!" Would I feel safer if my name were published? "NO!" Why not?

Editor Grieling reports: "One woman who saw our list called us to thank us because she saw that one of her co-workers has a permit. Having had an argument with the person in the past, she asked to be transferred to another department." That says it all, for me. Undue fear is created and furthered in the minds of people who still feel uneasy about guns. That same fear could escalate further into too many scenarios to discuss in a small book.

According to Colorado law, the Coloradoan has a right to publish the names of concealed carry permit holders. But that may change. There is currently a Colorado bill being moved along which would prevent police officials from releasing the names. Editor Grieling suggested passage of the bill is likely to be signed by the Governor.

The Coloradoan also prints the names of DUI convictions, divorces that make it go through the courts, hospital admissions (with waiver), and the typical births/deaths run by many newspapers across the nation.

Mr. Grieling also said, "Before Columbine, permits were already an issue in Larimer County. Because of Columbine and other gun-related bills, we feel that it is an issue that people are interested in hearing about. People in our county want to know who has a concealed carry permit. This is public information, and we chose to exercise our right to publish it."
The Colorado bill up right now disallowing police to release names is called HB1114. You can see text of the bill here:

The irony of it all:

Assume for a moment that the Littleton shooters had lived. Since they were minors, would the same paper have refused to print their names? Think of it. Mass murders are shielded, yet the law abiding are exposed to public scrutiny.

Any way of networking with gunowners to find a PI or friendly LEOs to get some dirt on the folks at the newspaper. Fight fire with fire. Oh yeh, I forgot your fighting the guy with the ink factory. Just a thought.

I live in Kalifornia, and they don't publish info like that even here.

I also admit I am a lawyer :). Even so, there is surely some lawyer in your town (ask a LEO) who will represent any of the newspaper's victims who are injured as a result of the publication of their name. You can bet your a** that one such lawsuit will stop this practice. Good Luck and best wishes to all.

My question is, would this rag publish the names and addresses of all the local citizens that are anti-gunners and opposed to defending themselves and their property? It would be a great public service to the local criminal element to know who they can attack and which homes they can invade without fear of being shot. It could possibly even help keep down healthcare costs in CO since there would be fewer shooting victims. Heck even criminals could give up their guns, they wouldn't need them anymore, just acting mean would be enough to get the sheep to give up the goods, and they wouldn't have to worry about any weapons cahrges being filed aginst them. Think about it, there could be massive benefits to society if a newspaper were to publish the names of willing unarmed victims, far more than the benefits obtained by publishing the names of CCW holders.

Hey guys, here's what I sent to the editor (I'm local.. and my name was one of those published.) Believe it or not, they are considering publishing it as a guest editorial. I try to keep my letters to them civil, factual, and to-the-point.

-------

Publishing a list of Larimer County concealed handgun permit holders
was not only an invasion of privacy, but also irresponsible,
undermining the benefit of concealed-carry permits, and putting both
permit holders and the rest of the population at increased
risk. Here's why:

One of the main advantages concealed carry permits is that the entire
population enjoys a reduced violent crime rate if only a minute
fraction, even 1/2%, of the population carries.

This communal benefit is only possible because a criminal does not
know who is armed and who is not. Unfortunately, with a published
list, this anonymity is removed, and an enterprising criminal now has
a de-facto list of those not armed, namely, those not on the list.

Mr. Greiling alluded to another issue: increased danger to permit
holders whose names were published. Of course, we understand that a
criminal would be foolish to single one of us out for a personal,
violent attack, however, many permit holders own more than one gun,
and since guns aren't cheap ($400 to $700 is common), these permit
holders are probably financially successful. Now your list becomes a
veritable directory for criminals: If you wait until we're not home,
you can steal firearms and other valuables from us. Why don't you
just publish a map to my house?

In an apparent effort to stereotype permit holders, you mention that
only 10% are women. If I were a woman, I would now be scared: any
potential rapist now knows that there is a much lower chance that I am
armed.

The recurrent theme of your articles, and Cherie Trine's quotes, is
one of fear, that you "would want to know if a neighbor or co-worker
is armed." I honestly don't know if you keep bringing this up out of
a genuine misunderstanding or in an effort to portray a negative image
of permit holders, and gun owners in general.

This fear is not grounded in reality. To obtain a concealed-carry
permit, a person must pass both Colorado (CBI) and Federal (FBI)
background checks, have no history of substance or alcohol abuse, no
history of domestic violence, no history of mental problems, and no
criminal record.

In short, just about the worst thing a person can do and still obtain
a concealed-carry permit is drive too fast on the way to work!
Concealed-carry permit holders are upstanding, law-abiding,
level-headed members of the community.

Federal civil rights legislation forbids discrimination based upon
race, creed, color, sex, age, religion, national or ethnic origin,
physical or mental disability, and status as a Vietnam-era veteran.
Since "gun owner" or "concealed-carry permit holder" is not one of
these protected classes, you have opened the door for an employer to
fire an employee because she has a carry permit.

Of course, whether or not you are allowed to carry at work is a term
of employment -- a carry permit does not allow you to carry on company
or private property if the owners don't want you to.

There is obviously more to the debate than "my right to know if my
neighbor is armed" vs. "my right to privacy." It is imperative to
understand that publishing the concealed-carry permit list can
decrease the safety of our community, and endanger its individual
members.

Another article, also published on February 20th, was titled, "No
penalty for carrying gun on CSU campus." The whole idea of "gun-free"
zones is ludicrous. The only effect such laws have is to disarm those
legally carrying, and advertise to criminals: "If you want un-armed
victims, come here." If a criminal is planning to rob, rape, or kill,
he isn't going to care whether or not it's a gun-free zone!

The police have no duty to protect any individual citizen, it's been
ruled over and over again in court cases. If a rapist or killer is
attacking you, he isn't going to wait for you to dial "911". Each
person is ultimately responsible for her own safety. Why are you
promoting an anti-self-defense view?

It would be interesting if an individual compiled a list of all the known individuals with a link to gang activity(and their paticulargang affiliation that would make things real interesting in the streets) in the Denver and Ft. Collins area. Then send it to the paper and see if they print it. In the name of public saftey of course;P. Are you listening colorado LEO's.

Good news. The editorial page editor, Kathleen Duff, informed
me today that they will run my response on Monday.

I hope they don't butcher it too bad...

An interesting suggestion for a pointed response to this invasion of CCW holder privacy is to set up a webpage with the names, addresses (and even photos of the homes) of the newspaper publisher, and anyone else involved in this exercise of "free speech" and the "right to know" and identify them as GUNGRABBERS.
Inform the public that THESE PEOPLE do not have CCWs, and are convinced that those who own and carry guns are a threat to the community (why else does the community have a "need to know" that you own/carry?).
Let THEM enjoy being in the spotlight.

It's about that time, folks. Go on with Part II.
