Frustrated Sheriff Tells Citizens to Get Conealed Weapons

He is a sheriff - he should just arrest the bad guys and not pontificate about society and the justice system.

He may have screwed this case beyond rescue with his comments.
Are you serious? He isn't advocating illegal actions, he isn't advocating vigilante justice, he is advising people how to defend themselves because as the Sheriff he has an obligation to advise people on the best way to protect themselves. As Sheriff he knows about his limited budget, he knows about his limited manpower and he knows how much territory he has to cover. He did exactly what he should do and more law enforcement supervisors should be doing the same thing instead of playing politics and mouthing platitudes that their liberal political bosses like to hear.

Re-elect that honest man

Truth tellers in public service catch hell but get respect. This man deserves a lot.

"He is a sheriff - he should just arrest the bad guys and not pontificate about society and the justice system.

Couldn't agree less.

"I've said time and time again that the punishment for that crime is too lenient. I think the NRA should get behind laws that put convicted felons away for 10 years if they are in possesion of a friearm - no plea bargaining, no early release - a straight 10 years, period.

And I think like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the NRA should have people in court watching when judges are lenient on criminals who use firearms to commit crimes."

Couldn't agree more.

I've always wondered why the NRA somehow seems to perfect the art of getting on the wrong side of issues related to the use of guns in crimes. If the NRA was totally pro-active against the criminal use of firearms using tactics such as is suggested above, lawful gun owners would get a LOT less flack from the gun-control crowd. Heck, they might even go away (OK sorry wrong universe).

We already have more people in prison than any country besides China, or so I am led to believe, and we have more things that are illegal than anywhere, probably including China. Is that the answer?

^ I think he meant the Judge.

I've seen some patterning from the Judge and you do have to be close... maybe he meant "you don't have to be accurate" because with shot, it's not accurate anyway? But probably I think its more of the old "cone of death" shotgun myth.

One of the few good sheriffs left in this country. His county borders mine and it can get rough on the westside and southside of Spartanburg.

True story, He taught our hunters education course back in the day. I didn't have to have it but went with my Father and Brother to check it out. Cool guy, one of the few who truly works for the protection of the citizens rather than the protection of the state.

I don't have a problem with the Sheriff advising women to carry a handgun. Other sheriffs and police chiefs have spoken out the other way so it's fair game for any sheriff to advocate carry. And it's very similar to LEAs advising people to carry mace.

I can do without the "The liberals call me an say the chain gang ain't gonna work - well ah got news fer ya..."

And instead of saying we have a suspect in custody, he makes it out like Walter Lance is guilty. He he hasn't even gone to trial yet. He is already trying this case in the media.

If I had a loved one who was shot by a criminal, I wouldn't appreciate a Sheriff waxing poetic on how this is a good example of why we need stricter gun control, and the conservatives are wrong with their approach to crime - blah blah blah. My opinion is, as it relates to a specific crime or incident - especially when someone has been murdered or raped, they should save the commentary on the judicial and corrections system.

If they are invited to speak at a luncheon, or they are part of a commision on crime, or some study or they're asked in an interview - they can give their opinions then. But don't use someone else's misfortune to further your political views.

Has anyone looked at the survey on the WYFF4 page on carrying? Only 3% say they wouldn't carry. It's very similar to a poll that a Chicago - West Side newspaper did asking if people were in favor of having an Illinois carry law - around 94% of respondants wanted some form of carry in Illinois.

The Judge ?

I also find his advice to get a Judge a little disconcerting. Is that really the best carry option? I think he should have said "I advise people to get educated on what firearms would be best for your situation, get training, get the proper equipment, get a carry permit, and I do advise people to carry."
For some women a 380 is going to be best, for others a nine, for others a .45 or 10mm will be best, for some a 410/45 revolver might be the best option.

And hey - why is he discriminating against Smith & Wesson?

I live in SC.

Not only does this Sheriff feel that way, but a lot of the other local Sheriff's in SC share his view. One of the local instructors for civilian CCW class a Sgt. in our local Sheriff department. His statement is that every law abiding citizen should be trained and conceal carry.

Spartanburg isn't known for it's "Expensive" habitats. S&W kind of discriminates themselves out of the picture with their prices.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure most of the sheriffs were against that "Free Conceal" law that has been shelved. The one that got rid of the permit to carry.

The phrase "law abiding" is the crucial factor. There's a big difference between favoring "that every law abiding citizen should be trained and conceal carry"... compared to favoring getting "rid of the permit to carry."

There are two very seperate concepts there...

Nike, you seem to be trying to jam two distinct concepts into one...

While I am wary of things people say out of frustration, often they are the truest comments.

I believe this LEO knows what he's talking about, and his county is lucky to have him.

He also sounds like the kind of sheriff who decides what should be legal and what shouldn't and goes from there. He certainly doesn't sound like someone you'd want to be on the wrong side of.

Yes.

Actually I don't know anything about the "free conceal law".....never heard of it. I just know the sheriff in our area fully supports CCW.

Ok, I did read a small snip about a bill for open that was defeated. Don't see any big deal about this, SC remains one of the most gun friendly states around.
