Friends son Shot in throat with .22

My friends son was at a party last weekend and a fight broke out and he was shot in the throat with a .22 amazing thing is he swallowed the bullet and they removed it from his stomach. The only damage was the entrance spot in his neck and the incision from the doctors getting the bullet out.
For the record I do not agree with the type of party he was out or the crowd he was with but thankful he was ok and puts it into perspective how little damage a .22 can do. If I can figure out how to add some photos from my phone I will post some up.

I'd say he was incredibly lucky not to be killed. The .22 is no joke. I'd say this is a pretty strong exception to the rule.

I have to disagree... Just think what would have happened if this bullet would have hit his carotid artery. Then we would be having a discussion of how a .22 is still very lethal.

This thread is going to lead back to one point... shot placement before caliber.

I'm more on the divine intervention side of things but there were three other kids shot at the same time and I do think something larger would have changed at least one of their outcomes.

Any cartridge will do little damage if it hits in the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) place.

Your friend's son was very lucky. What did the bullet pass through before striking his throat?

Why did they surgically remove it from his stomach? I'd think letting it pass would be a safer, non-invasive alternative.

No surgeon is going to be cutting into me like that to collect evidence. They'd just have to wait patiently while I read magazines...

A stomach pump or induced vomiting would also get it out for collection. No cutting necessary.

I believe the medical profession is supposed to have a "do no harm" policy.

There had to have been more damage than indicated in the OP. How could it wind up in the boy's stomach if the only damage was the entrance wound? It had to have penetrated the esophagus as well.

Too little info; distance of shot, type/quality of round, direct shot vs. ricochet, length of barrel, .22lr vs. .22 short vs. 22 pellet, etc....

"B.S. Alert"
To many parts of the story don't add up. We need more information. Post a link to to news article that would certainly exist if 4 kids were shot at a party.

If you'll copy and paste the link provided by the OP, the Standard-Examiner comes up. I know nothing about this source, but it is a link.

Here are links to the stories:

I was a reporter in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, back in the late 1980s/early 1990s when a woman shot her common law husband in the throat with a .25 ACP.

When the paramedics go there he coughed and spit the bullet out. He also refused to press charges, saying it was an 'accident.'

...thankful he was ok and puts it into perspective how little damage a .22 can do.

On the flip side, my brother (step) died from a single 22lr shot at close range from a snub nose revolver.

That also puts it into perspective how deadly a .22 can be.

(it happened almost 30 years ago.... prior to Al Gore and the internet.... even if it happed 3 years ago, I would have no intention to provide a link to prove it to the skeptics.)

(RIP John)

A few weeks ago several high school students in Chardon, OH died from .22 gunshots. I'd have to guess a ricochet or that this round passed through something else before striking his throat.

As far as taking it out, if the bullet was deformed in any way, I'd much prefer an incision in my stomach to a perforation in my intestines. A perforated bowel from a jagged piece of copper jacket would make for a really bad day.

B.S. alert revoked!
It would be nice to know more details about the gun, caliber, distance, if direct hits, etc. The police are sure to have some of that info. but we'll never hear it.
Lucky the injuries weren't much worse.

I seen on the news a while back a women got shot in the head with a .45 it didnt penetrate her skull. It went through her windshield before bouncing off her head. Either that .22 bullet went through something before striking his throat or it was a subsonic round. Or maby a typical remington dud round.

My Dad's best friend was killed by a .22 (because two young boys were messing around with a firearm, unsupervised).
