Friends Dragunov, chambered in .308? Am I missing something?

From my knowledge, the Dragunov uses the same 7.62x54r round as the M91/30 Mosin Nagant or am I wrong?

I know the 7.62x54r and .308 share similar dimensions, but I want to make sure that what my friend has is indeed chambered in .308.

Even if it is .308, I don't suppose it would be safe to fire my ammo through his rifle due to the different dimensions of the round can cause malfunctions or increase stress on parts of the rifle.

can someone please clarify?

There were a few drugunovs imported in .308. These are usually in sporting config(no adjustable gas sys.) and are marked "Tiger".

Hmm, will have to gather some information from my friend.

Is it possible to fire my ammunition through a Dragunov chambered for .308?

I use a Mosin Nagant, but I don't want to try this if it's going to cause damage to the rifle.

I think the differences between the two rounds, while small, may be enough to cause trouble. Increased chamber pressure, cases expanding too much and possibly resulting in FTE or FTF.

The Chinese copy of the Dragunov could be had in .308, I've seen a couple. Were I after a $5000 2 MOA rifle, I'd be all over one!:D

If it's a true Drug, if he's smart he'd sell it and buy himself several better rifles.

They are way overpriced for what they are...

Chinese NDM-86 in .308, banned by Clinton. 1500 were special ordered, 1000 made it in but importation was squashed right then and there. Interesting case worth a read.
Sub-MOA rifle easy. Accuracy of the .308 version is fairly well documented by any small amount of googling.
Very light, overall length similar to an M14, bout 7.5-8 lbs with optic and magazine.

I believe all Soviet SVDs are/were rejected with a vertical spread at
1.04", but shooting cheap milsurp 7.62x54r probobly won't do it. 7n1 or 7n14 will. DMR rifles.

Plenty of old magazine articles and reviews on the same site with regards to accuracy of the .308 version.
Do yourself a favor....shoot the right ammo. Curved magazine could be a .308, there are a couple early ones....but a straight magazine has to be a .308

Well it's not exactly a thing I get to post often.:)
But it's one of my favorites none the less. Uncanny accurate.

They are proprietary to the rifle which is a bummer. They are easy enough to find but the price is in excess of a couple hundred per usually.
Some rifles came with 2, many with 4, and my understanding is that 3000 extras/spares made it in.
I've collected some, since the rifles are limited the 3000 do float around, but it's an issue.

Actually, he was a bolt gun man primarily, and his weapon of choice was the Winchester M70 in 30.06, and to a lesser extent, a scoped Ma Deuce. I'm sure he fired the M14 a time or two, though, and was honored by having a variant of the M21 named after him (the M25 White Feather").

Here's mine:

You wouldn't think they would be very accurate being an SVD but mine managed to get 3/4" groups at 100 yards with FGM ammo.

Very nice, glad to know some others here have them.
I've been handloading for mine and it's worked out really well, but it shot the Federal FGM and Winchester 168 Silvertips nearly as well.

Mine generally exceeds my capabilites, probobly not saying that much:rolleyes:, but it makes it fun at least.
